Music's Spell: Poems about Music and Musicians | Emily Fragos
38 posts | 1 read | 1 to read
Presents the works of some of literature's greatest waxing poetic on the universal language that needs no words, from Rumi and Shakespeare, to Elizabeth Bishop and Billy Collins; from the wild pipes of William Blake to the jazz rhythms of Langston Hughes, the result is a symphony of poetic voices as varied as the music itself.

#MarvelousMay #Gratitude Listening to music has been something I‘ve done as long as I can remember. I remember my first transistor radio, calling in to request my favorite songs and when we got our first stereo buying 45‘s. Today I walked down memory lane on Pandora through the 70‘s. These were some of my favorites. I can‘t imagine my life without music. What are your favorites?

Sace My mother was a huge fan of opera. I wish I could like it. 4y
Andrea313 I will definitely have to read this one; thanks for posting! Do you have a favorite opera? 4y
Cuilin @Andrea313 I love the classics like Puccini and Verdi‘s operas. I also love Bizet especially The pearl fishers. Norma is amazing. Manon Lescault, Wether, La Cenerentola. I could go on. Haven‘t approached Wagner yet. But will one day. Do you like opera? 4y

Andrea313 @Cuilin Yes, I love opera, and I work for an opera company. :) I'm always so excited to find people who are fans. I love Puccini and Bizet as well, and Rossini! La Cenerentola is wonderful. I love contemporary opera as well; so many fantastic new productions being developed these days! 4y
Cuilin @Andrea313 Oh wow. What company? I‘m a MET educator. I volunteered at a local school to teach opera to 5 graders as a club. It‘s something I would love to do again. 4y
Andrea313 @Cuilin That's amazing! I'm sure those students had a wonderful time. I work for the Michigan Opera Theatre in Detroit. 4y

In Denmark, we had the Boogie List - daily show with the top songs of the moment with a host hyping up the songs. Whenever I got home from school, I turned into Boogie and danced and sang along to the songs above. 💃💃💃

I could probably find another 50 songs to sum up my aughts, but these stand out for me!

#BelowZer00s

MyNamesParadise Oh wow, that list of songs brings back memories for me! 4y
Cinfhen This would definitely be similar to my daughter‘s choices!!! She was OBSESSED with Simple Plan, Blink 182 and of course Britney Spears 💖💖💖💖💖💖💖we once tried to go to MTV Total Request Live but they told me I was too old and my daughter who was 15 was too young 😂😂 4y

@vivastory I have no idea what better way to discuss the album, so here we are! 😆

I LOVE it! John the Determinist, Organ Donor, and Tomorrow are my top 3 favorite songs! He's like a mix of Belle and Sebastian (as you said), The Like, and a little Simon and Garfunkel, with a tiny sprinkle of certain Josh Ritter and Andrew Bird albums. I really enjoy his vibe!

THANK YOU for the suggestion. Give me more! I'm always looking for new music.

vivastory I'm so happy that you loved it! I will definitely pass along music recommendations as I think of them. 🙂 4y

8) White Stripes 2005 (Starlight)
9) Roots 2007 (Voodoo Lounge)

16) Regina Spektor 2017 (Uptown)
@madamereadsalot1

vivastory Music confession: My first concert was Megadeth 🤘🎸😄 5y
madamereadsalot1 Megadeth! They were one of my favorites when I was on junior high! I've seen The Flaming Lips too! They put on an excellent show. I so want to see Sigur Ros live. I've heard their shows are practically spiritual! And The Roots! Come on! That must have been amazing! 5y
See All 8 Comments
madamereadsalot1 Also Radiohead and Regina! 5y
madamereadsalot1 Ok, honestly, I'd love to see just about everyone on that list, with the exception of the White Stripes. I never got into their music. No real opinion on them. 5y
vivastory @madamereadsalot1 If you ever get a chance to see Sigur Ros, definitely don't miss it. You're right. It's the closest thing to a spiritual experience I've had at a concert. The Roots were phenomenal, it was before they were on Fallon's show, so the venue was really intimate. They played for almost three hours. I also saw them in '97 open for Beck. 5y
tpixie Fun times in great KC venues!! 5y

The delightful @madamereadsalot1 & I have decided to share our favorite concerts. We'd love to see your posts about great shows you've attended & the wonderful anecdotes & memories that seem to inevitably accompany live performances! Here is a list of my 16 favorite concerts:
1) Smashing Pumpkins 96 (Kemper Arena)
2) Tori Amos 98 (Starlight)
3) Elliott Smith 99 (Bottleneck)
4) Pavement 99 (Granada)
5) Sleater-Kinney 2000 (Bottleneck)
Smashing👇

vivastory Pumpkins concert had to be rescheduled due to the tragic overdose of keyboardist Jonathan Melvoin eight days before they were going to play in KC. They returned on September 1 & played for nearly 3 hours. I was blown away. 5y
madamereadsalot1 Oh my gosh! Sleeter Kinny! I've never been so lucky to get to attend one of theirs when they've come to town. And Elliott Smith! Man, breaks my damn heart I'll never have the opportunity to see him live. He's one of my favorite musicians. I think I need to put him on right now actually. 5y

CocoReads @BookishJess that‘s a great memory! 6y
Johanna414 I have some of the best memories of listening to classic rock with my dad as a kid- We listened to his favorites but he always made sure female rockers were well-represented which I really appreciate now! Not many 10 year olds I know are obsessed with Heart, Janis Joplin, Joan Jett, etc. but I sure was! 6y
CocoReads @Johanna414 that‘s pretty awesome. My I remember getting most of my early musical education from my dad and Uncle. My uncle was a pretty good guitar player and obsessed with the blues but we always had a pretty good range of musical genres going: big band, blues, rock, country, top 40. Sadly I have no actual talent for music-just loads of enthusiasm and appreciation. 🤘 6y

#5bands

1. Our Lady Peace
2. No Doubt
3. Korn
4. Goo Goo Dolls
5. Green Day

I'm sort of still stuck in the '90s, and my music taste, much like my book taste, is very eclectic.

These "5" lists are fun!

WarpedSweetness I love No Doubt! Though I was disappointed in that most recent album they came out with. 7y
WarpedSweetness @Librarybelle I had such a hard time picking bands. I love music, and like you my tastes are really diverse. 7y
Librarybelle Yes, @WarpedSweetness ...these are groups that feature prominently on my playlists, though I have so many more. Totally depends upon my mood. But, I think the diverse taste allows me to better appreciate music as a whole. I can listen to the quiet notes of classical music, followed by heavy hard rock and not blink an eye. ❤️❤️ 7y
WarpedSweetness @Librarybelle Slipknot and Stone Sour are always my favourites, but the others I picked because they've been most played on my music lists recently. I completely agree. I am the same way. 7y

I'm surprised there's no playlist tag. I can't be the only one who has music going while reading! This has been my reading playlist for a while now. What are yours? #readingplaylist

Em890 I usually just pick a song in my iTunes library and put the whole thing on shuffle unless I am in the mood to listen to something specific. But as soon as I start reading I don't pay attention to much else. 8y
TheBookDream @Em890 I have trouble concentrating. If I have a repetitive playlist on in the background I can zone out better. Although that's backfired (one of my favorite pieces is forever associated with one of the worst books EVER) but overall it works well. 8y
Em890 @TheBookDream For a while I was really into the Hozier album and it was what I listened to while I read on the train and now anytime any of the songs come one I feel like I should be reading 8y

My pick for #Recommendsday is Music's Spell. I picked this and Jazz Poems up at the Faulkner Bookstore in the French Quarter of New Orleans. I love the themes and formatting of these Everyman's Library Pocket Poets, and as a musician and teacher these themes in particular were so enjoyable! I'm looking forward to picking up more of these little books of poetry.

MrBook Sounds great! Wonderful cover. 8y
