Life After Life: A Novel | Kate Atkinson
post image

#everybreathyoutake #anglophileapril
Every breath Ursula takes is quickened by the buried memories of her past lives, especially when she has the chance to alter her present life's tragic course. From the beginning, we learn that she may be stalking a prominent quarry, even as death seems to stalk her. The form sounds like the best part (and it is good fun), but the characters made the novel for me- they rank with the best British classics.

Cinfhen Great choice!!! Although this novel drove me bonkers... not in a good way 🙄 1mo
Billypar @Cinfhen There is so much brutality to endure, and the forward momentum (not quite the right phrase for this I know 😉) does slow down in the second half. I wouldn't have liked it half as much if I didn't respond to Atkinson's writing as I did. 1mo

Cinfhen I felt like I was stuck in some sort of time warp BUT it was pissing me off. 😂😂😂I almost bailed but did manage to finish the book but swore I‘d never read Atkins again. And now I‘m cohosting #BelowZer00s buddy read, with @BarbaraBB featuring a book by Atkins (edited) 1mo
Zelma @Cinfhen I couldn‘t even finish Life After Life but absolutely loved Case Histories. So, so different. 1mo
Cinfhen Thanks @Zelma I‘ve heard this book/series is good 🤞🏼🤞🏼 1mo
Reviewsbylola Pretty sure I either hated this book or bailed on it so I‘m equally excited about the readalong choice. 😆 @Cinfhen 1mo
Billypar Sorry to have to tell you this @Zelma and @Reviewsbylola but I've heard if you bail on this book, it means you're doomed to pick it up in all your future lives until you reach the end 😉🕰️🌨️ (@Cinfhen you're in the clear). 1mo
Reviewsbylola 😆😆😆 1mo
Mdargusch Very funny @billypar! 😁 1mo
Zelma @Billypar 😳😂👏 1mo
CarolynM I loved this too, but I loved the companion novel, A God in Ruins, even more. 1mo
readordierachel That's so good to hear @CarolynM ! I really loved this one and have been wondering about God in Ruins. 1mo
Billypar @CarolynM Glad to hear you say this because I'd like to spend more time with the Todd family. There's always that fear though of whether the 2nd book will live up. 1mo
Suet624 I read this a few years back when I had a lot of brain fog from Lyme. I was so confused while I was reading it! “Wait, who is this again? What is happening??” 😂😂😂 1mo
Billypar @Suet624 Yeah, I would not want to read this while dealing with brain fog: this is the kind of novel to read while highly caffeinated 😴 ☕😃 1mo

Next will be a #BelowZer00s buddy read (& party 🎉🎈), Jan 10-12. Details will follow! 😘❤️

Fight Club | Chuck Palahniuk

Question 7 of 7.

If you participated in #StepfordSummerParty and or #HellOween  buddy reads did you have a favorite book? How did Fight Club compare to the other two books? How did you feel about Palahniuk‘s writing compared to the others? Do you see any similarities between the three books? Would you consider Fight Club horror???

Megabooks I didn‘t do either of those buddy reads, but I have read The Stepford Wives. I think Fight Club is more suspense than horror, but I did find FC scarier! 2mo
BookwormAHN I missed The Stepford Wives, but I really loved The Elementals. I liked the way Palahniuk writes but I didn't think that Fight Club was horror. I think it was more psychological suspense. 2mo
BarbaraBB I agree, FC is much more psychological than horror. I didn‘t do either of the other buddy reads but I will be joining from now on ♥️ 2mo
See All 20 Comments
Librarybelle I‘ve participated in all 3! Stepford Wives was the spookiest for me, I think. The Elementals I didn‘t really enjoy and thought a little campy, though I know I was in the minority on that. Fight Club is more psychological. All three have been fun to read, and I‘m excited to see what the next read will be! 2mo
TrishB I loved The Elementals. Didn‘t do Stepford Wives and bailed on Fight Club. 2mo
peaknit I‘ve participated in all three as well. I enjoyed The Stepford Wives the most I think because the 70‘s were such an odd time. I didn‘t think any of them were particularly scary, but all definitely weird 😊 I‘m with @Librarybelle on The Elementals, campy is a good word. 2mo
Kalalalatja I read The Elementals and enjoyed it way more than FC! 2mo
thereadingowlvina I didn't join The Stepford Wives, loved The Elementals and bailed on Fight Club. I didn't like the writing at all 😔 2mo
DebinHawaii I joined in all three & Stepford Wives was my favorite. All had dark elements mixed with dark humor. I agree that Fight Club was more psychological suspense than horror. I listened to The Elementals on audio which I think enhanced its campiness & made it fun-scary. Fight Club just grossed me out. So for me, I'd rank them in the order we read them. Thanks for hosting @Cinfhen & @BarbaraBB looking forward to another buddy read. 🤗 2mo
CarolynM I wouldn't have read any of them without the buddy reads but I felt that all of them were interesting reads. I think The Stepford Wives was the best of them. It was atmospheric and insightful and I actually cared about the characters. Thanks for the party @Cinfhen and @BarbaraBB 😘😘 2mo
GripLitGrl The stepford wives was my fave the book had a more creepy vibe & diffrent ending to the film. So while i saw the movie the book felt diffrent & kept my interest. Elementals would be my second pick. fight club the book was so-so for me really translated better for me as a film. 2mo
GripLitGrl I Definitely dont see fight club as horror genre. The other two books fit into the horor genre. 2mo
batsy All three are such fascinating books that I probably would have put off for longer if I didn't do the buddy reads, so thank you for that ❤️😁 Stepford and Elementals win out over Fight Club, but I'm glad I read FC; it's definitely a book that disrupts one's perspective! 2mo
erzascarletbookgasm I didn‘t do The Elementals (couldn‘t get a copy on time), SW and FC were great reads though I liked SW better. Wouldn‘t have picked up FC if not for the buddy read. Both are thought provoking and have loads of discussion points. FC is definitely not horror. 2mo
Cinfhen First to my triple hit players @batsy @GripLitGrl @CarolynM @DebinHawaii @peaknit @Librarybelle Thank you for partying with me through the decades! It‘s been super fun and I‘ve found our discussions really insightful. For me, SW was my fav too. The story just worked on all the levels and it‘s withstood the test of time. I too thought Elementals was more of a spoof and campy is the perfect word. It was more atmospheric than scary. Hated FC 2mo
Cinfhen @Megabooks @BookwormAHN @BarbaraBB @TrishB @Kalalalatja @thereadingowlvina See above comments and THANKS for sharing your LOVE of reading with me!!! These buddy reads are only successful because of your participation!! So fun to share music, fashion and books with you all!!! Hope you‘ll be back for #BelowZer00s in Jan 2020😜 2mo
JaclynW @Cinfhen @BarbaraBB I missed the Stepford Wives buddy read 🙁 but I've done the last 2 reads. I liked both The Elementals and Fight Club. I agree with others about Fight Club being more psychological and Elementals more horror (campy, yes). I think Stepford Wives would be more MY kind of book than the other two so I've got to read it someday. I have it, just need to carve out the time. I've read 2 other books from that author and LOVED them both!! 2mo
JaclynW @Cinfhen Count me in for #BelowZer00s ! 2mo
BarbaraBB @JaclynW Yay! You can still nominate a book from the 00s - see @Cinfhen ‘s page! 2mo
JaclynW @BarbaraBB Great! Thanks! I will start thinking. 2mo
