The Last Werewolf
The Last Werewolf | Glen Duncan
Then she opened her mouth to screamand recognised me. It was what Id been waiting for. She froze. She looked into my eyes. She said, Its you. Meet Jake. A bit on the elderly side (he turns 201 in March), but youd never suspect it. Nonstop sex and exercise will do that for youand a diet with lots of animal protein. Jake is a werewolf, and after the unfortunate and violent death of his one contemporary, he is now the last of his species. Although he is physically healthy, Jake is deeply distraught and lonely. Jakes depression has carried him to the point where he is actually contemplating suicideeven if it means terminating a legend thousands of years old. It would seem to be easy enough for him to end everything. But for very different reasons there are two dangerous groups pursuing him who will stop at nothing to keep him alive. Here is a powerful, definitive new version of the werewolf legendmesmerising and incredibly sexy. In Jake, Glen Duncan has given us a werewolf for the twenty-first centurya man whose deeds can only be described as monstrous but who is in some magical way deeply human. One of the most original, audacious, and terrifying novels in years. From the Hardcover edition.

I've tagged this as horror, but it's pretty mild - I should probably have chosen a Stephen King for this prompt! 5 🌟

rkeo This book is so good. I always recommend it to people. One of my friends forced me to read it years ago. I thought it would be so dumb, and I was blown away. 2mo

This was really unique and fun. Scary and dark in some parts and other parts were just entertaining and well written. It ended well and had a great plot and offered something new to the supernatural genre.

sprainedbrain I loved this one! I still need to read the following book. 11mo
EmilySchneider7 This was well outside my usual reading scope, but I was too intrigued by it to let it pass by. I really enjoyed the writing and thought it was a fascinating read. I did have to put it in the freezer once or twice though! 😂 11mo

Penelope is "going to be a cat for the day" she informed me of this as she started to puuuur and hunker down in her box. Meghan also saved my butt by sending a trick or treat bag because I totally forgot to get one. Check out Marlo Mae with that tail going, she is so happy to have a new toy! Thank you again, you made the whole family happy!!!

#NeedsMoreLove #AndItsAugust

❤️The Last Werewolf is not what I expected...Intelligent and literary.

❤️Jacob Tracy wasn't on my radar until a sale... who knew western supernatural fantasy was something I would love so much?

❤️Zebulon is so brilliant, morbid, funny, upsetting, and incredible, I may never get over him.

❤️ I know Achilles gets lots of love, but it's the best thing I have read in a long time and I can't stop talking about it.

Maike Achilles was sooooo good 😍 not my usual genre but I loved it 2y
Ashley_Nicoletto I picked up Achilles as a daily deal a few weeks ago. I'm going to have to read it soon. It gets so much love v 2y

I've had this book kicking around my TBR for years. I was so pumped to sit down and read it, and I hate it. I'm bummed, but at least it's off the bookshelf now. I can't see myself ever revisiting this book. 👎🏻

Zelma I've gone back and forth with this one for awhile and will likely skip it. 2y

Mehso-so

At first I was pleasantly surprised by this book. It is literary and has interesting character development, which was not something I expected from a werewolf novel. But, after the love interest came into the picture the writing started to feel more contrived than literary (not to mention the excessive discussion of buttholes). I'm excited to dig into my other library picks though!

Books_Wine_Repeat Station Eleven is so good!! Enjoy! 3y

I just finished audio-booking this one; maybe the tone was put in place by the reader. This book was so bleak and apathetic that I had a matching emotional response. The only points that weren't depressingly bleak, were unexpected manic phases of the main character. The book had several peaks and none of them were very compelling. At the end - no pay off and the acknowledgement that this book is just a prologue to book 2 in the series.

What Anne Rice did for vampires with INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE, Glen Duncan does for werewolves in this book. Like Rice, Duncan writes an often-lyrical book that transcends genre fiction and asks those "big questions" that I contend are often done better through genre conventions. By examining the monster, we examine our humanity. Duncan, carefully driving the internal (compelling and funny) narrative with an external pot-boiler plot.

Probably the most literary werewolf book I've ever read. Primarily I enjoyed it, but sometimes the style was too wordy and didn't move forward as quickly as I would have liked. Other times it seemed magically incongruent in its poetic style.
