Super Sad True Love Story
Super Sad True Love Story | Gary Shteyngart
The brilliantly inventive, wildly funny and humane new novel, set in an economically and politically collapsed America, by the author of the best-selling Absurdistan.

This book was different than any I ever read.I didn‘t like any of the characters at all.The male protagonist was a weak person, the female protagonist was a snotty young woman. Throw in deceit, bigotry and physical abuse-you get the idea. This book was set at some point in the future. If the world ends up anything like this book describes, we‘re all in trouble. Unfortunately, I think that this is the direction we are heading, especially in the US.

A love story that might set up in a dystopian worl. The story line can be quiet dragging and the ending is something expected. As for the character, Eunice Park is not my favr as she is pretty messing up with Lenny Abramov. Her choices lead to more problem. It is a great love story novel that feature vulnerable side of human in a world lead by robot and technology.

The library has been MASSIVELY busy for the past couple weeks 😱😱😱😁👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻! Sometimes, most of my day is spent literally just replenishing my many displays. It‘s truly amazing and inspiring to watch so many books get borrowed 😁! Here is one of my replenishment stacks today for my #BooksToFilm Display ☺️. I know SSTLS is a series, but why not include it 😎.

Have you read any of these?!

I finally took time to finish this snarky dystopian novel. An (epistolary) love letter to the written word, a lament on western civilisation and a meditation on the timelesness of the human condition. Philip Roth meets Margaret Atwood. Very ambitious, but maybe a future classic. Read this if you want a glimspe into our capitalist future!

rretzler I‘ve been eyeing this one for some time. Glad to know it‘s good! 5y

The story is in the not-too-distant future, and America is on the brink of dying. The book seemed like it would be poignant and funny and sad. I guess it was, but it was also disappointing. I had to work to finish it. It wasn‘t bad, but it wasn‘t great...

Feeling a little low today. My husband and I have been contemplating moving and a property I was really interested in seeing was supposed to have an open house. Drive there only to find out it‘s already under contract before it was even technically on the market. So now I‘m trying to cheer up with some tea and a book. 😔

darklydreaming Oh no :( not sure where you live but the market here is terrible!! Same thing is happening to us 😔 5y
LaraReads Can completely relate. 💔 We are trying to get our house ready to sell. We‘ve been here for 17 years, and need to do a lot of ‘get ready for a new buyer‘ type stuff. We have seen some really perfect places come & go while we are still prepping. I have to keep telling myself, it‘s not ‘our‘ perfect place if wasn‘t meant to be. Hang in there! 😽 5y

LibrarianJen Something similar happened to us. The realtor of the house we wanted made my realtor jump through so many hoops. We even offered 5k above asking price because we wanted the house that badly. We were within an hour of being under contract only for them to call an say that they accepted another offer. House buying sucks! 5y
Purrfectpages @JoScho @Freespirit @cobwebmoth thanks. It‘s so early in the process, just trying to stay positive. (edited) 5y
Crazeedi Something better will come! 5y
Purrfectpages @LibrarianJen oh no! That sounds awful as you were so much further into the process! My mom was saying it‘s probably better we didn‘t get our hopes up by seeing it in person after all. I hope it all eventually worked out for you. 5y

#lavieboheme #musicalnewyear in staying true to the song part of my image may be offensive to some....but I hope not too offensive. Rent is one of my favorite musicals- when it came out a significant number of tickets had to be marketed affordable to students.

Chrissyreadit @vivastory glad to hear- it does sound interesting to me- I was just searching for books that took place in the East Village and it popped up. 5y

ReadingRover @Chrissyreadit It‘s probably changed some but that sounds about right. 5y
Chrissyreadit @ReadingRover it‘s actually good to know the vibe is still there. Is Indian Row still a place to eat? 5y
ReadingRover @Chrissyreadit That I don‘t know. I can find out. She lives in Stuyvesant town near avenue C and 16th Street. It‘s technically Gramercy but right above the east village. I don‘t go down as often as I‘d like. 5y
ReadingRover @Chrissyreadit my mom said she hasn‘t heard of it but that doesn‘t mean it isn‘t there. There‘s a section for every nationality. 5y
Chrissyreadit @ReadingRover it‘s on 6th between 1st and 2nd ave. Amazing Indian food. The entire block has different Indian restaurants. It was a favorite place of mine to eT, and get henna. If your family like Indian and it‘s still there it was the best! 5y

It is super sad but the love story, oddly, is not the sadness. How close this hits to our today, marks the sad truth of our times- the very real often getting obscured by the ever so simple- love trumps all... maybe not but well worth the read.

I did not find this book funny, but I did enjoy it. I see this book as mostly about fear and how we chose to deal with it, especially when those fears stem from issues or problems that can‘t be overcome. One of those books that was tough to get through but nice to sit and think about afterwards.

#MarchIntoOz Day 19: This has a #IfYouLeaveMeCanIComeToo vibe - anyone who has read this or any Shteyngart yet? Sounds like a dystopian love story with philosophical musings on immortality and what it truly means to be human.

julesG I read it some time ago. It took me some time to get into it. I remember a few times when I thought WTF am I reading here? 6y
Billypar I really liked it- great speculative fiction and clever dark comedy. Just don't go in expecting a tearful romantic tragedy: that part is more Woody Allen, I'd say. I would also recommend another of his, Absurdistan. 6y

I read this one for my postmodern literature class, and I really enjoyed it. The plot was bizarre, but it is also plausible. The way the world is now, I can see how the future could turn out in that way. The loss of literacy and the focus on vanity is a future that I hope never comes to be. Overall, it was an entertaining and thought-provoking novel.

Vansa I LOVED this. 7y

Poor Lenny - I think many on Litsy will sympathize with our not-so-young-anymore hero as he struggles with #modernlove in a near future society where social media has completed its takeover, and the physical books he still carries are only recognized by others for their offensive ink odor. In speculative fiction terms, I feel like this is after William Gibson's last trilogy but before Atwood's Maddaddam trilogy #septembowie @Marchpane @Cinfhen

Cinfhen Great synopsis 💚 7y

This love story is set against the backdrop of a near future NYC, a consumer culture dystopia. The world is going to hell and everyone is distracted by online gadgetry and brand name merchandise. This funny, tender satire is one of my favorite books of the past few years. Lenny Abramov and Eunice Park are a tragic odd couple trying to eke meaning out of a superficial world dominated by status and wealth.
