Where'd You Go, Bernadette
Where'd You Go, Bernadette: A Novel | Maria Semple
Bernadette Fox is notorious. To her Microsoft-guru husband, she's a fearlessly opinionated partner; to fellow private-school mothers in Seattle, she's a disgrace; to design mavens, she's a revolutionary architect, and to 15-year-old Bee, she is a best friend and, simply, Mom.Then Bernadette disappears. It began when Bee aced her report card and claimed her promised reward: a family trip to Antarctica. But Bernadette's intensifying allergy to Seattle--and people in general--has made her so agoraphobic that a virtual assistant in India now runs her most basic errands. A trip to the end of the earth is problematic. To find her mother, Bee compiles email messages, official documents, secret correspondence--creating a compulsively readable and touching novel about misplaced genius and a mother and daughter's role in an absurd world.

This was a fun one! The perfect summer poolside read. I really like Bernadette, and the Galer parent portrayals were hilarious. Great satire with just the right touch of truth thrown in. The characters are wacky, crunchy granola, evangelical, elitist and eccentric all thrown into one bucket. Fun times!

I need a mug that says “When life hands you 🍋, read 📚 and drink tea.”

Our floor was damaged during a shoddy installation of our new washer & dryer. The Home Depot guy did a great job fixing the bad install, but it‘s been a nightmare trying to reach their insurance company about the claim. After setting an appt to make a statement and the adjuster being a no-show, I now find they are on vacation until the day we leave for Iceland. 😫

Scochrane26 That sucks. Btw, I meant to comment on your post about foot care. My yoga teacher does some foot exercises w/ us. One is just standing on a tennis ball for a few min, moving it from the toes, to arch, to heel. It really helps loosen up. 2d
4thhouseontheleft @Scochrane26 Yes! That‘s one I‘ve been doing for a while. (When I remember 😂) quite a few exercises in this book I‘ve done before at either PT of yoga, but there are a bunch of new ones too! 2d
Scochrane26 @4thhouseontheleft I had a short occurrence of plantar fasciitis a few yrs ago, & now I spend a fortune on quality shoes for work & exercise. It‘s painful, sorry you have to deal w/ it. 2d
See All 6 Comments
4thhouseontheleft @Scochrane26 I‘ve had it twice, the 2nd occurrence lasted almost a year! Both times it started after a 10 mile + hike. I‘m okay now for the most part, but trying to keep up with preventative exercises to keep it from coming back. 2d
AmyG I‘m sorry. 2d

Just finished reading. Overall a good read. Bernadette Fox seems to be a badass lady who doesn't give a shit about what anyone else thinks of her. If you want a quick read, this is it.

Why am I only getting to this now???
I can't remember the last time I had so much fun with a book.
Kathleen Wilhoite does an excellent job with the narration. I believe her delivery is one of the main reasons why I enjoyed this book so much!
This is one of those books where you sit with that silly grin on your face through the entire book. It just makes your heart overflow with joy you forgot was possible to flow out of that said heart.

In the beginning, I found this book a little slow but when it picked up steam I couldn't put it down! Was Bernadette crazy or, was she a genius. And all of the people who thought Bernadette was crazy, were they actually the crazy people themselves? Hmmm 🤔 I'm glad I finally got around to reading this book off my TBR stack! #3 of #14Books14Weeks

The little things in life make me so happy... Like scoring all these books for under $4.00 at my local thrift store!! I know I really probably shouldn't be buying anymore when I have a TON I'm working on and a ton of e-books AND audios to get though... BUT... To be fair I'm pretty sure one if not two of these books are actually on my TBR. SO... it's really ok.PLUS... It was only $4.00! 🎉😜

This book was a rollercoaster ride of kookiness! It‘s written primarily in the form of emails, legal documents and letters which keeps it moving very quickly and constantly changing. It follows Bernadette, former architect and current outcast, as she navigates life in Seattle dealing with aggressive neighbors and private school moms before disappearing into thin air.

The trailer had caught me in an itchy curiosity, n then i‘d ended up @ the library grabbing a haul of GN for GNAB prep, and I thought, why not? If it‘s being added to this many book clubs, there‘s gotta be a reason!

Oh boy, was there! I am swelling with awe at how fun, well written and captivating this was! Books written in correspondence are hard! Keeping this many characters stay in line?? I mean shit as a reader and a writer i am in love!

Bernadette, you are quirky, witty, loving, and weird. I must say, I loved every page of this book. It is satire at its finest - a commentary on the wealthy, the “worldly”, the self-delusional, the tech obsessed, the mommy gossipers, and the spiritually empty. But at its heart, it is a story about a mother and a daughter who love each other fiercely and go to the ends of the earth for one another - literally, they go to Antarctica. Highly recommend

Reading won out over inflight entertainment this time and I read this book from beginning to end. Absolutely loved the first 80%. Agnostic to the next 10% and hated the last 10%.
