The Masterpiece | Francine Rivers
Mehso-so

I was definitely entertained, but in a cheap way. No doubt that Francine Rivers is a talented writer, but I thought the characters relied too heavily on stereotypes and were pretty superficial. And the plot was convenient. It‘s just a fantasy, which is fine, but I felt like her talent could have made it more.

Super Sad True Love Story | Gary Shteyngart

I did not find this book funny, but I did enjoy it. I see this book as mostly about fear and how we chose to deal with it, especially when those fears stem from issues or problems that can‘t be overcome. One of those books that was tough to get through but nice to sit and think about afterwards.

This book is so strange but parts of it manage to stick with me

This book is so engrossing because the characters are written well. Picked this book because of its relation to urban planning, but it covers a lot of issues related to female identity, responsibilities, and experience. Sometimes I found it a little cliche (I get a little turned off at anything that begins to resemble “motherhood is everything” themes) but all in all found it to be a good read.

American Gods | Neil Gaiman

This book was a recommendation and a good one at that (thanks Lindsey!). Shadow was such a hard character for me to understand so I‘m happy it was kind of “explained” in the end...the last few chapters were my favorite for that reason. Anyway, loved the writing (there was only one chapter I was tempted to skip) and am hoping to read Anansi Boys in the future!

Flowers for Algernon | Daniel Keyes

I read this again at a good point in life. It made me consider how much identity is tied to intelligence. In academia, and I‘m sure in other fields as well, it‘s hard not to tie your self worth up in your production and the novelty of your ideas. But humility, kindness, empathy, and forgiveness are arguably more important...maybe they don‘t make you unique, but they make you valuable :)

Sittaford Mystery | Agatha Christie

I read this on a plane. It did it‘s job and entertained me for a few hours. I don‘t read a lot of mystery books, so I‘m guessing this is common, but I wish the most important clue weren‘t revealed RIGHT at the end. I think it could have been worked in earlier and we could have tried to guess more. But then again, real life plays out gradually. Or maybe I just need more practice at solving mysteries!
