Dark Matter
Dark Matter | Blake Crouch
Are you happy with your life? Those are the last words Jason Dessen hears before the masked abductor knocks him unconscious. Before he awakens to find himself strapped to a gurney, surrounded by strangers in hazmat suits. Before a man Jasons never met smiles down at him and says, Welcome back, my friend. In this world hes woken up to, Jasons life is not the one he knows. His wife is not his wife. His son was never born. And Jason is not an ordinary college physics professor, but a celebrated genius who has achieved something remarkable. Something impossible. Is it this world or the other thats the dream? And even if the home he remembers is real, how can Jason possibly make it back to the family he loves? The answers lie in a journey more wondrous and horrifying than anything he couldve imaginedone that will force him to confront the darkest parts of himself even as he battles a terrifying, seemingly unbeatable foe. Dark Matter is a brilliantly plotted tale that is at once sweeping and intimate, mind-bendingly strange and profoundly humana relentlessly surprising science-fiction thriller about choices, paths not taken, and how far well go to claim the lives we dream of.

Wowza! What a great story that dealt with retreat and choices. Everyone always wonders what their life would look like if they chose one option over an other and this story explores that conundrum.

I really needed a book like this that kept me guessing and turning the pages.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Merethebookgal That was a good one! 4w
marleed I loved this book. On Halloween, the Friends of the Lib Bookstore sells their mysteries at half price. I was so excited to grab a pint condition hardback for $2. If I give a library book 5 stars I want it in my personal library so when I can thrift a 5 star I feel like I hit the motherload! 4w
That-Bookish-Hiker @marleed $2 is a deal!!! I got my copy at Barnes and Noble for $6. It was on their sale shelves. I do the same as you! I have some authors I buy their books automatically but it‘s a new to me author I‘ll get the book from the library and then if I love it I buy a copy for my personal library. 3w
That-Bookish-Hiker @Merethebookgal it was! The whole concept hurt my brain lol but it‘s totally crazy to think that there are so many different versions of lives branching off from each decision made. 3w
Merethebookgal @That-Bookish-Hiker I totally know how you feel! We discussed this on episode 41 of @EclecticReaders and the episode‘s title is literally “My Brain Hurts!” 🤣 3w

Ooooooooh, maaaan! This book is phenomenal!! I love a good character-driven story. I have to work at 4:30 in the morning, but I stayed up til 11 to finish this book anyway. That's how good it is. Crouch has a way of making these (presumably) out of reach scientific achievements seem very real. It is TRIPPY. And man, did I hate Jason! I didn't like very many people in this story, but I couldn't help rooting for him. Pick!! 👍🏾

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️! It had me on the edge of my seat and time and time again it left me with: “hold up hold up. What???” I love that.
I also LoVED the stylistic writing style! It feels like my own and yea I loved that.
A solid Sci-fi thriller. I don‘t think I‘d read it again though.
Warnings: non-graphic sex scenes (2 or so) and lots of F-bombs.

"And maybe I can let go of the sting and resentment of the path not taken, because the path not taken isn't just the inverse of who I am. It's an infinitely branching system that represents all the permutations of my life between the extremes of me and Jason 2."
Another great selection from Crouch that explores the idea of a multiverse, infinite versions of ourselves and our lives, and reads much like watching a big budget thriller.
⭐⭐⭐⭐ ⬇#quotes

Chab256 "I've seen so many versions of you. With me. Without me. Artist. Teacher. Graphic Designer. But it's all, in the end, just life. We see it macro, like one big story, but when you're in it, it's all just day to day, right? And isn't that what you have to make peace with?"

Mehso-so

Great premise: who hasn't wondered at some point "What if I'd done X instead of Y?" and I like to think about parallel worlds now and then. Also there's the hugely important message about appreciation. But then halfway through it got all Jason-Bourne-meets-Enid-Blyton's-Magic-Faraway-Tree and went downhill from there. And I'm not at all happy that Daniela (MC's wife) ended up as a prize to be fought over/competed for.

kathedron In fairness, Daniela does object to being "raffled off like a fruit basket" but a good few pages have gone by before it occurs to any of the Jasons that maybe she should get to choose which one she wants to be with. 3mo

Whereas I feel like he's just done an info-dump on me.
So now I must wonder, is this a male fantasy/delusion (that women are turned on by this kind of behaviour) or is it a parallel world? (It sure as hell isn't mine.)

Lcsmcat I vote for your first theory. 3mo
rwmg Well, I can only speak for myself of course, but I still find it hard to believe that not everyone is interested in general knowledge trivia and doesn't see nice shiny snippets of fact as gifts - and not directed specifically at women (or in my case, men). 3mo

to be honest I was pretty 'meh' about this book until about 2/3rds of the way in when it picks up significantly. I really like Crouch's take on multiverse concepts but the beginning of the book is a bit too fast and feels rushed. I also wish Jason was a bit more fleshed out as a protagonist (I'm supposed to care about him, right?). 🤔 still, I liked the ultimate message of the book and the ending genuinely surprised me.

This is a sci-fi book for those readers that may have never read a sci-fi novel. It's as accessible as a sci-fi theme gets, peppered with elements of mystery thrown in.

I was into this audiobook from the first chapter. It got my pulse raising and kept my interest throughout. The narrator does an excellent job with all types of voices and has appropriate pace for the story.

I give this audiobook ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Loved this book. Blake Crouch is the next great sci-fi writer.
A man is abducted and transported to a similar, but different world where he is a stranger to his wife, he has a different job, and everything he knew never existed. This book chronicles his journey back to the place he belongs. Lots of twists and turns, constantly building tension, and an explosive climax.
Read. This. Book. ASAP!

TheBookAddict I just finished reading this last week and it was a good book. Quite interesting. I told my husband he has to read it. I do have a question about the book that I‘m dying to ask someone who‘s read it, so let me know when you‘ve finished the book. 😆 2mo
Straycat @TheBookAddict I just finished it! What‘s the question? 2mo
TheBookAddict @Straycat how is it that only one Jason2 made it back to the original Jason‘s world? 2mo
Straycat @TheBookAddict I honestly didn‘t even think about that. It would‘ve taken him forever and a thousand different paths to find Jason 1‘s world. By the logic at the end there should‘ve been more. Unless maybe Jason 2 had a map drawn out or something before he entered the box in the first place? But that should‘ve been explained lol 2mo
TheBookAddict @Straycat when Jason2 went to dinner with Daniela he explained what some other possibilities for their lives in other worlds were. I thought that he was telling her what he saw on his way to her. He also left his world with 100 biles of the drug they used. 🤷🏽‍♀️ 2mo
Straycat @TheBookAddict I didn‘t think of that when I was reading it lol. I was so wrapped up in him getting back to her. Those are some major plot holes 😂 2mo

3.5 ⭐️! I listened to the #audiobook & it was like a movie playing. This is an action-packed #scifi thriller that moves at a frenetic pace. It's essence is about regret. How far would we go to not have to live with our decisions. It was intense & a bit extreme, getting bogged down at times with Jason's obsession with his old life & getting his wife back. But it was really interesting! #Audio #PopSugarReadingChallenge #Pop19 #BOTM
