The Mummy | Anne Rice
41 posts | 103 read | 42 to read
"Ramses the Great has reawakened in opulent Edwardian London. Having drunk the elixir of life, he is now Ramses the Damned, doomed forever to wander the earth, desperate to quell hungers that can never be satisfied. He becomes the close companion of a voluptuous heiress, Julie Stratford, but his cursed past again propels him toward disaster. He is tormented by searing memories of his last reawakening, at the behest of Cleopatra, his beloved queen of Egypt. And his intense longing for her, undiminished over the centuries, will force him to commit an act that will place everyone around him in the gravest danger....'Rice succeeds masterfully in blending horror and romance- Ramses is a fascinating character, heroic, yet tragically flawed by his human desires' - Atlanta Journal

It's 4 AM and I can't sleep a wink so I'm up with one of my most favorite tales. ----- "The small hours. Ramses stood in the hallway of Julie's palatial house, observing the intricately carved hands of the grandfather clock move into place. At last the big hand bisected the Roman numeral twelve, and the small hand bisected the Roman numeral four, and the clock began its deep melodious chime." #RamsesTheDamned

Waiting for my middle kiddo to get off from work. It's eleventy billion degrees out, but at least my book is awesome. It's a reread, but it's been a couple decades or so (is there any other phrase that makes one feel so much like a dinosaur?), so it reads like a new one.

Chrissyreadit It is jarring to think I‘ve read books several decades ago... I love Ann Rice but I do not think I read this one. 4y
Traci1 @Chrissyreadit my favorite of hers is The Witching Hour, but I remember this one being a close second. 4y

I will always love Anne Rice. I was right about this pulling me out of my reading slump. Her writing is beautiful, lushly descriptive, and hypnotizing. I rolled my eyes a little at how quickly the characters fell in love, but it makes for a hell of a story. I strongly encourage others to read this book- and then quickly pick up the sequel she wrote with her son.

I‘ve gotten into a reading slump so I decided to go back to the first author I fell in love with in college. Her writing never fails to stir my soul. I‘m not participating in Readathons this weekend- just catching a few minutes here and there. This weekend is about family time. Hiking pictures will be coming this afternoon.

Final #Bookhaul post! This stack is from another favourite used #bookstore in Edmonton: from Alhambra Books. Good selection of general fiction, poetry, drama, sci-fi/fantasy etc. & I'd say around half or more of the store is non-fiction. They also had info about independent & used bookstores in Edmonton area. I hope to check out some new-to-me stores next time we're in town! Tagged book is one I hope to reread this year so I can read the sequel.

#MarchBookstagram2018 Day 23: A Modern Classic
The Mummy by Anne Rice

First published in the year I was born, this feels like the lesser known masterpiece from the Vampire Queen compared to her Vampire Chronicles. This is also my first Anne Rice book bec I tend to avoid scary and dark book. But it‘s about time to change the genres up and what better way to start than this bestseller. #horror

I know this is a pretty cheesy movie, but I love that the main female character(even though she‘s portrayed as a fragile “lady”) is a bibliophile. The best line in the movie is when she stands up, drunk & says “I‘m proud of what I am”
“And what are you?”
“ I...am a librarian!”

zezeki This movie is the reason why as a kid, I wanted to become an archeologist and/or librarian 😁 6y
Caroline2 I love this film too! And yayyy Evie is a great character! 👍🏻 6y
Lizpixie @zeljka @Caroline2 I must admit, I have a soft spot for this movie. Librarians, ancient curses & Brendan Fraser. What‘s not to love? The Mummy Returns is on Friday night, get the popcorn ready!🍿 6y

Anne Rice is like the Queen of melodrama! She tells a good tale and writes it well. What more could I ask? This was great fun!!!

As I've said before this book is DRAMATIC and about half way through I asked myself, 'Why am I reading this?'. But I kept at because there was nipple tweaking and Cleo (when she showed up) was an enjoyable little hellion. Julie cries all the time, Cleopatra likes breaking necks. To me, if I want to read the sequel, it's a good sign. More nipple tweaking in 2018!

As far as #supernaturalbeings go, I've always had a soft spot for mummies. #Booktober

DeborahSmall I want to start reading Anne Rice but don't know where to start. I only have one of her books, Violin, but I like the look of her vampire series. Suggestions welcome x 7y
OSChamberlain @DeborahSmall I'm on the same boat! 7y
Dogearedcopy @OSChamberlain @DeborahSmall Go back to the beginning with 'Interview with a Vampire' and continue in the order of publication. The Vampire Lestat series merged with the Mayfair Witches series, and then the Vampires Chronicles. As with any series, some titles are better than others; but each novel adds to the biblioverse 7y
DeborahSmall @Dogearedcopy thanks I'll give it a shot👍🏼 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage I've read them all (except a few of her more recent ones), and agree. It's best to start at Interview and go chronological. If Interview doesn't grab you, I'd try The Witching Hour which is the first of the Mayfair Witch series. 7y

Anne Rice is the mistress of writing about immortality. That's a central theme of this story as well as in her vampire chronicles. Reading this book is like watching an action/suspense/romance film. So descriptive, but not overly descriptive, and so thought-provoking. Thank you, Anne Rice, for another thoroughly engaging and emotional story. (Yes, I know it was published in 1989, but I just discovered it!)
