A secret's been unearthed in the small Irish town of Duneen and with it a discovery made that illuminates stories from the town's dark past and that has implications for the cast of brilliantly, beautifully drawn characters.
The castdown policeman who lives a uneventful, lonely life punctuated only by the next meal - until now; a mysterious family of three beautiful spinster sisters each with their secrets and sorrows; the town's gossip who thinks she knows the answers.. And when a discovery is made on the building site of a new development up behind the old school, this once innocent, slow-seeming town is revealed to have a much darker undertow.

So this has been on TBR list for a year or so, and have to say was worth the read. It was easy to follow and the story was a compelling story and worth the read, you couldn't help but root for the main character Sgt. PJ and his many troubles

This stack are of all the books I've read this year so far (not included is an ebook). I'm currently reading my 18th book for the year 😄 Despite starting full time study in February and sometimes not even reading on weekends, I'm actually doing better than this time last year in my reading progress! That's a win haha 👌

I suspect this was so-so for me because it‘s not my particular cup of tea. I thought the writing was good enough to be interested in picking up his next book, but likely I won‘t be buying a copy. I still love you, Graham! I just don‘t love moody Mysteries!

I will have to admit, I purchased a signed copy of this book because I am a fan of the authors, Graham Norton‘s, talk show on BBC America. As it turns out it is a decent crime novel set in a small town in Ireland. The characters are well developed. A nice casual read.

Just finished my first book of 2019 (started it this morning and took advantage of my pyjamas and duvet day whilst recovering from the excesses of last night) and what a pleasure it was to read. Even better than I had anticipated. I found myself really invested in all the characters because off the authenticity, gentle humour and sympathy of the writing. Will definitely read his newest one at some point this year. Happy New Year all 📚

I wanted to love this, but almost bailed halfway through. Too much small town drama, miserable people with miserable lives, and I found it difficult to care about them or the mystery of the bones found at the building site. There‘s nothing technically wrong with the novel, it just wasn‘t for me. I fear I may be headed for a reading slump.

charl08 Oh no! I liked this- so unexpected. 2y
DGRachel @charl08 I think this was just a case of wrong book/wrong time for me. It was definitely not what I expected from watching Graham Norton on BBCAmerica. 2y

My company Christmas party is tonight. I‘m currently borrowing a company truck while my car is being repaired, it‘ll be dark, the roads are wet and will be icy when I leave the party. Oh, and it‘s really cold outside. It‘s okay to stay home and read instead, right, rather than freezing my behind off in a cocktail dress, driving a truck that is so much bigger than my car and lacking gps or heated seats? 😱

TrishB Mine was last night and that‘s exactly how I felt!! 2y
DGRachel @TrishB I seriously can‘t decide. I have 4 1/2 hours to try on dresses, go to the bank to get tip money for the bar and valet, and plug the address into the gps app on my phone, if I‘m going to go. But I‘m so scared of driving that truck in the dark, on icy wet roads. My stomach is figuratively in knots and I want to vomit. #introvertproblems 2y
TrishB That sounds scary 😔 I got a lift home do didn‘t have to worry about that. Is there anyone you can share with? 2y

DGRachel @TrishB The executive admin emailed everyone last night with a code for Uber. Apparently, the company will fund an Uber ride round trip, up to $25 each way. I‘ve never used Uber before, because it makes me nervous. I hate not being in control. 2y

Zelma I commented on your other post. It definitely sounds like you should stay home. However, I will throw out w recommendation for Uber. I‘ve used it quite a few times and love it. Always a great experience, and ten times better than any taxi cab I‘ve ever taken. 2y
DGRachel @KellyK @Zelma Thanks for the support!! 2y
TrishB No probs 👍🏻 the social stuff is stressful this time of year especially- we were supposed to be out tomorrow but it‘s been cancelled due to anticipated bad weather and we were all happy! 2y
TricksyTails I vote stay home and cozy up with Graham. 😊 2y
kspenmoll Wondering if u went. I have used Uber successfully but I won‘t drive myself or with anyone when its snowy & icy. Just me. 2y
DGRachel @kspenmoll No. I opted to stay home. I might get grief from a few people on Monday, but most people probably won‘t even have noticed that I wasn‘t there. I‘ll do the Ladies Craft/Ornament Exchange thing after work, at the office, on Monday, and that will be my social engagement with work for the year. 2y

I‘ve watched Graham Norton for years on BBC America and how his show has evolved (it was very crass in the beginning). The man has hidden depths, I may have to read his memoirs. The story is well written and moves quickly.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Graham Norton's debut novel is brilliant. When a body is discovered in the fictional town of Duneen, rural Cork, ghosts, loves and losses of the past are pulled to the surface. It's a charming novel with just the right amount of darkness and heartache. Despite being written by a comic, it's not particularly funny - there is a subtle wit scattered throughout the novel.

#TBRtemptation post 9! The remote Irish village of Duneen has known little drama. Then the remains of Tommy Burke are discovered on a farm. This is Sergeant PJ Collins' first genuine case ever, and 2 of the suspects are 2 of Tommy's former lovers: Brid, alcoholic mother of 2, and depressed Evelyn. As PJ works the case, secrets in the community begin to come out: animosities, resentments, and the like. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

Dark, funny, deeply moving. Holding is a special debut from a man that clearly has a lot of depth. While the mystery element should appeal to fans of the traditional English (in this case, Irish) style, there is a disturbing undercurrent that pushes this book to the edges of the genre. These are not cuddly/quirky characters. They are unattractively flawed with most carrying dark secrets over decades that have poisoned them. Exceptional.

FountainBookstore I should mention that I listened to the audio read by the author. It was great. 2y

Decent mystery, although a little more on the cozy side of things than I typically like. Not going to lie, though -- the setting of a small Irish village was a big draw for me.

Anna40 I like mysteries and thrillers but find that most are too gory for me. I'm also sick of reading about rape ans torture of women who are the victims in most crime novels... so cozy sounds good! :) 3y
