A beautifully written piece about a famous author and his largely-absent relationship with his son. I‘m feeling quite reflective after finishing it, and also a little sad.

MicheleinPhilly Had not heard of it before. Sounds wonderful! 2d
cathipink Interesting! I feel like you usually read stories based on the inverse perspective (child writing about parent). I'm going to check this out! 2d
CarolynM Glad you liked it. There's a lot to think about. I was fascinated by how oblivious the biographer was to the fact that he was writing about more lives than just that of his subject. 1d

JennyM @MicheleinPhilly @cathipink it‘s a really great read. @CarolynM recommended it (thank you - I loved it), and we both agree it deserves more attention. If it were published by a larger Australian publishing house, I think you‘d have seen this much more. 1d

I thought this was brilliant. While it‘s about a clinical psychologist, her work, and her missing son, there are so many psychological themes raised- I particularly enjoyed seeing the therapeutic relationship play out. However, I can see why this might not appeal to all. It‘s not fast-paced and there is a lot of therapy chair work described. Also, it‘s focused on a trauma therapy unit, so there are many triggers. But it was so in my wheelhouse!

BarbaraBB Love your pics and I think I‘d love the book too. 5d
JennyM @BarbaraBB my little ones a few years ago. All, including the dog, are now much bigger. I also think you‘d like the book. I keep thinking about it. 5d

If I‘d seen this book in the library, I‘d have probably passed on it. However, I saw a review and thought, why not. And I‘m so glad I did, because it‘s brilliant!!! It‘s written by a Clinical Psychologist and, I don‘t know if you‘d call it a psychological thriller, but at the halfway mark, I‘m impressed.

Kalalalatja Sounds interesting! 1w
Cathythoughts Sounds good ... I love the title. 1w

Heartbreakingly sad, The Book Of Dreams asks us about what it means to love in light of our own mortality. The author‘s post-script was a wonderful touch, and added to the poignancy. It reminded me a little of Backman and his ability to hit you in the feels with a simple sentence. I really enjoyed it.

Nope, nope, nope 👎🏼

Not sure why some of the dialogue was so crass - it felt immature. Maybe I‘m not the right demographic.

A sweeping saga about the life and death of Stella Fortuna, an Italian born American immigrant who had much more modern attitudes than the times she lived in. I think most will already know Stella‘s story in some way - my Grandmother‘s is very similar - and so will resonate deeply. However, I think for some it might also be too painful a read (TW in the comments). But this is Stella‘s story, and it will stay with me for a while ♥️

Set in my home town of Brisbane, this was about as Aussie you can get. After a slow start, I enjoyed it. However, I don‘t quite get all the hype (it‘s HUGE in Aus). And I also wonder how this would be for someone not from Australia, particularly in print.

JennyM @LapReader it‘s jam packed full of local references, so I think he will love it. And I can see it being a series - it has a kind of Underbelly feel, but with a gorgeous main child character. 1mo
JennyM @Freespirit @leeRHarry I put off reading it because of all the hype. I nearly bailed 1/4 way in, then there was an ah-ha, and it got better for me. It‘s a bit of a bonkers story though. 1mo
CarolynM I didn't like it. I found it really hard to believe in the characters and the story was pretty far fetched too. I don't know Brisbane at all so that didn't help. I have heard a lot of people rave about the writing - I thought it was good, but nothing special. Sorry I'm being so negative - I must have missed something - I know I'm in a serious minority here. 4w
JennyM @CarolynM I hear you. I‘m confused with all the hype and wasn‘t enjoying it at all for the first part. It was very far fetched, and got a bit daft at the end. But I did feel connected to Eli Bell. So, for me, it was ok, but not arm-flappy brilliant. 4w

I‘m giving this a pick, but only just. Full of quirk, quips and Jackie Kennedy 🕶 it was a fun ride. But I felt there were too many things thrown into the story, some of which were really big serious things, and it didn‘t quite stir up the poignancy I think it should have. ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

RadicalReader The Apple laptop adds a nice silver touch to the background love it!! I love using Apple products got an iPhone and an iPad mini that I found on apples website in their refurbished section six years ago and it‘s still working flawlessly 3w

Pickpick

Four families living in wealthy suburbia form a friendship based on little more than their address and kids the same age. However, their perfect lives and friendships are challenged when one family adopts a little girl from a Russian orphanage.

Quietly unsettling, this was a good reflection on what we sometimes do to cover our pasts and how we need to belong.

Mehso-so

This is the story of a book that was written, lost, and then found, and the lives of the people connected or affected by the book. I so desperately wanted to love it, and I can see the brilliance of the idea. Yet much of it seemed to pass me by, and I didn‘t really enjoy it. I think it might be a case of right book, wrong time - maybe I‘ll try again another time.

Much ♥️ and 🙏 to Trish for gifting this to me. I‘m sorry I didn‘t love it.

Laughterhp I‘ve owned this book for so long and haven‘t been motivated to start reading it yet!! 2mo
JennyM @Laughterhp there is so much #litsylove for it, but it was not for me. I put it down for a few weeks halfway through, but that still didn‘t help. Not sure why (edited) 2mo

JennyM @Amiable glad to be in your company 😉 2mo
Buechersuechtling @Amiable @JennyM I perfectly feel you. I know that feeling so well. I tried Nicole Krauss‘s and Jonathan Safran Foer‘s books a few times. But what both of them have to say is obviously not for me. I can‘t find anything in their books and am always bewildered by all the praise they get for their work. 2mo
JennyM @Buechersuechtling @amiable I‘m always fascinated when a book that‘s so popular just isn‘t for you. The beauty of reading 📖📚 2mo
Buechersuechtling @JennyM @Amiable Most of the time I am thankful because after years of passionate reading I still can‘t push away that tiny first thought that comes up in those cases, saying: “Is there something wrong with you❓” – No, it‘s not but seemingly old habits die hard. 2mo
TrishB I didn‘t love either 😘 but you never know until you try! 2mo
Amiable @Buechersuechtling @JennyM I know what you mean about questioning yourself when you dislike the “popular” books. I‘d heard such great things about Jennifer Egan, so I read one of her novels —and hated it. It used to bother me to be so out of sync, but now I‘m comfortable with my own tastes. 2mo
