The Long, Long Afternoon
The Long, Long Afternoon: The most atmospheric and compelling debut novel of the year | Inga Vesper
8 posts | 6 read | 8 to read
The sunniest places hold the darkest secrets . . . A stunning 1950s set debut mystery brimming with atmosphere and perfect for fans of Tangerine, Small Pleasures and Mad Men. ________ Yesterday, I kissed my husband for the last time . . . It's the summer of 1959, and the well-trimmed lawns of Sunnylakes, California, wilt under the sun. At some point during the long, long afternoon, Joyce Haney, wife, mother, vanishes from her home, leaving behind two terrified children and a bloodstain on the kitchen floor. While the Haney's neighbours get busy organising search parties, it is Ruby Wright, the family's 'help', who may hold the key to this unsettling mystery. Ruby knows more about the secrets behind Sunnylakes' starched curtains than anyone, and it isn't long before the detective in charge of the case wants her help. But what might it cost her to get involved? In these long hot summer afternoons, simmering with lies, mistrust and prejudice, it could only take one spark for this whole 'perfect' world to set alight . . . A beguiling, deeply atmospheric debut novel from the cracked heart of the American Dream, The Long, Long Afternoon is at once a page-turning mystery and an intoxicating vision of the ways in which women everywhere are diminished, silenced and ultimately under-estimated. Everyone is talking about The Long, Long Afternoon 'Beautifully crafted, claustrophobic and compelling' Stacey Halls, Sunday Times bestselling author of The Familiars and The Foundling 'Such a vivid atmosphere of stifling LA heat and stifling 50s domesticity' Clare Chambers, author of Small Pleasures 'Breathtakingly stylish, hypnotic and masterfully gripping' Chris Whitaker, author of We Begin at the End, Waterstones Thriller of the Month 'A perfect read' Mary Paulson Ellis 'Loved this taut slice of classic noir' C.J. Tudor 'Beautifully written and brilliantly observed' Simon Lelic 'Atmospheric, beguiling' Araminta Hall 'A tasty, tense, page-turning combo of James Ellroy and Kate Atkinson with a bit of Mad Men thrown in' Liz Hyder 'Completely gripping and kept me guessing right to the end' Amanda Mason, author of The Wayward Girls 'This wonderful, beautifully written novel held me to the very last word' Stephanie Butland, author of Lost for Words 'Stunning' Amanda Reynolds, author of Close To Me 'Evocative, stylish and gripping' Deborah O'Connor

I really liked this book, it is part historical fiction part crime. Set in 1950s America, Joyce Haney, wife and mother disappears, leaving a bloodstain on the kitchen floor. Ruby Wright is the hired help, she knows what is going on, but it could get her into deep trouble. It had me gripped, very compelling with a backdrop of racial and gender injustice.

On a hot Californian afternoon in 1959, housewife Joyce Haney suddenly disappears leaving only a bloodstain on the kitchen floor. The African-American housemaid, Ruby is first on the scene and is immediately arrested for murder. What follows is a clever crime-mystery that crackles with an unsettling depiction of white 50s suburbia with all its oppressive structures. Very noir-ish and really great on audio 🎧 👍

I enjoyed our latest book club read, a mystery set in the heat of 1950‘s California. Not just a whodunnit to be solved by a cop under a cloud that has followed him from Brooklyn, but more a story exploring race, feminism, female friendships and the oppressive atmosphere of suburbia. Great writing, a quick easy read, would be a good one for the summer! (Also love, love, love the cover 💛)

JennyM This has been getting stellar reviews. I have it on hold at the library and looking forward to it. Great review 😊 3y

Its 1959, a baking hot summer in peaceful Sunnylakes, California.
On this day something terrible happens that shatters the calm of that balmy summer afternoon with explosive consequences.
When Ruby Wright arrives for her cleaning job at the Haney residence she finds the children alone in a blood smeared kitchen and Joyce their mother missing.
Fearing murder or at the very least a case of abduction the police are quick on the case...

This was a really interesting story. It looks at the racial differences that existed back in those days and touches on the riots of those times as well. The plot itself was twisty and well done. Its a fairly slow burn until you get to the ending where it picks up to a dramatic finish. The story is told by various characters which I really like as it adds more depth to the story and allows you to see it from more than one perspective #netgalley 4*
