The Lying Life of Adults | Elena Ferrante
post image
Pickpick

Ferrante says : ‘ When I write it‘s as if I were butchering eels, I pay little attention to the unpleasantness of the situation.‘ I loved this book , I love her bluntness , her melodrama, & how she makes that great. I feel I‘ve been in Naples... I‘ve lived in the gritty melodrama of the characters ( great characters 👌🏻) lives.

Here‘s my #booked2021 first quarter wrap up! I skipped around, as usual, and managed to get through more prompts than I expected, so I‘m quite pleased. 😊 I enjoyed all of them too, except Boca Raton, but at least that one was short. 😅

The End of Loneliness | Benedict Wells

Pickpick

When Jules loses his parents at the age of 11, he and his siblings are sent to boarding school and it‘s as if he loses them too as they are separated by both location and grief. Jules is forever changed as he grows up, tries to find the right path, and reconnects with his brother and sister who will also never be the same. Sad and beautiful, I really loved this. It is a book that will stay with me. #booked2021 #translatedintoyour1stlanguage

Cinfhen This book sounds so sad but your review makes me want to pick up the book right away 3y

Exquisite. It made me feel EVERYTHING and filled me with a warmth I‘ve not experienced for a long time when reading. I was bewitched. And I think if I read it at another time in my life, I would take a different wisdom from it. Beautiful book ✨🌸❤️

A lot going on with my family so I‘ve been very busy but last night I spent 3 hrs going back looking at all my favs posts and catching up! I really have missed it so I will try to check in regularly! I‘ve missed a lot of the banter! X 3y

Before the Coffee Gets Cold | Toshikazu Kawaguchi

Pickpick

This is a sweet story of second chances and, dare I say it, the power of coffee. In an obscure cafe in Tokyo, those who wish to visit a past occurrence can do so...but, there are rules. Lots of rules. And severe consequences if the coffee gets cold...

I enjoyed this one. The characters are entertaining, and I admittedly shed a few tears. Many thanks to @BarbaraBB for sending me this one for #Japan and #ReadingAsia2021 . Also, ⬇️⬇️⬇️

Cinfhen Agreed, this book was sweet and robust 💜 3y

Winter in Sokcho | ELISA. SHUA DUSAPIN
post image
Pickpick

This is a slight, quiet book, where nothing actually happens beyond seafood being eaten. I liked it. Our mc is working the off-season in a small guest-house, in the tourist town of Sokcho. A French cartoonist checks in, & something starts (not a friendship, not a relationship...)

I loved the sense of place- maybe I‘ve always thought of South Korea as Seoul (in the way people think England is London). This is Whitby or Falmouth & felt so familiar.

rockpools The girl‘s messed-up relationship with her mother rang true. There‘s a lot about self-image, body image, plastic surgery, and life as a biracial French-Korean girl which I was taken aback by.

Content warning for disordered eating.

Oh, and this is why I shouldn‘t do challenges! I started the month in #SouthKorea and have doubled back to end the month there. #ReadingAsia2021 may take a while!!

TrishB Great review 👍🏻 3y
rockpools @squirrelbrain It‘s super-short, Helen - you‘d have it finished in under an hour! 3y
rockpools @Cinfhen Wouldn‘t that be AMAZING, Cindy? I‘d love that! When I (and the world generally) get our act together, I should plan a round-the-world trip, and visit 😁... Maybe 2030! (Doesn‘t that sound like The Future??!) 3y
rockpools @TrishB Thanks Trish 😘. 3y
Cinfhen Yes, it REALLY DOES sound futuristic 2030 3y
