The Believer
The Believer: Encounters with Love, Death & Faith | Sarah Krasnostein
5 posts | 7 read | 1 reading | 9 to read
One of 2021s most highly anticipated reads, after The Trauma Cleaner sold 80,000 copies in Australia and New Zealand. In this second non-fiction work, Krasnostein documents the stories of people whose beliefs deviate from the norm, and finds herself questioning some of her own along the way. Publicity campaign will include print and online extracts in major publications; author interviews on national radio, podcasts and with Australian writers festivals; widespread review coverage in major broadsheet, tabloid and literary publications. High-visibility campaign for the trade including early reading copy distribution, promotions in bookseller e-newsletters and catalogues and author events at key conferences. Major consumer marketing campaign including strong print advertising in national publications including Australian Women's Weekly, a comprehensive social media advertising campaign featuring an eye-catching video trailer, book club notes, cover reveal and a Book of the Week campaign with Better Reading.

I enjoyed this book that follows the lives of six people/groups - each with a strongly held system of beliefs that shape their day to day lives (be that a “good” death, ghosts, a young earth, or UFOs.) Like others I too felt most invested in the sections on the death doula (Annie) and Katrina. There is a lot of interesting “food for thought,” however I would have liked if author‘s reflections were presented a little more cohesively.

It feels like audiobooks are taking me forever to get through lately. I don‘t know if it‘s the choices I‘m making or just me? I picked this one up on Katherine May‘s recommendation (author of Wintering). It was fine. Krasnostein investigates “belief.” She follows six believers, who each believe in something different (Buddhism, Creationism, aliens, etc). I was totally captivated by the death doula narrative…and far less by every other piece. 👇🏻

monalyisha 1/1: The conclusion that she comes to (that something in YOU always has to die in order to pursue belief) is neither hopeful nor as depressing as it sounds. 2y

24-29 Apr 2021 (audiobook)
A recommendation from my sister which did not work for me. The narration was grating and the author‘s interjections jarring. Some stories were more interesting - the death doula, Annie, and her client Katrina did interest me - but I did not care for the religious fundamentalists or the ghostbusters. I would have bailed but Audible revoked my return privileges (no idea why) and it is too much bother to contact them.

I loved her first book and I really enjoyed this one. Plenty to think about. A talented writer and researcher. Death, UFOs, religion all woven together to make a good thoughtful read.

A beautifully written book (from the author of The Trauma Cleaner) about how we make sense of the world we live in and our place in it. It focuses on the lives of 6 people who come at things with VERY different beliefs, and I was moved by some of the stories and grumpy and challenged by some others! But I loved it for that - an antidote to the echo chamber. Great read.
