Sex, Lies and Question Time
Sex, Lies and Question Time: Why the successes and struggles of women in Australias parliament matter to us all | Kate Eliis
6 posts | 5 read | 1 to read
In Sex, Lies and Question Time, former MP Kate Ellis explores the good, the bad and the ugly of life as a woman in Australian politics.Seventy-seven years after the first woman entered Australian parliament, female politicians are still the minority. They cop scrutiny over their appearance, their sex lives, their parenting and their portfolios in a way few of their male colleagues do. It’s time to call bullshit on the toxic Canberra culture.Alongside her own experiences from fifteen years in parliament, Kate Ellis reveals a frank and fascinating picture of women across Australian politics, including Julia Gillard, Julie Bishop, Linda Burney, Sussan Ley, Penny Wong, Sarah Hanson-Young and Pauline Hanson. Kate explores issues like sexism, motherhood, appearances, social media, the sisterhood and, of course, sex. But she also celebrates everything Australian female politicians have achieved.Wry, candid and provocative, Sex, Lies and Question Time is a powerful call to demand more of our leaders and our institutions. It reminds us we need greater diversity to shape a fairer Australia, where ‘women’s issues’ are everyone’s issues. A better parliament means a better Australia. The stakes are high, and the standards should be too.

Kate Ellis was a federal MP in Australia (2004 to 2019). At 30 she was the youngest person to be appointed a federal minister. Kate left politics because she couldn‘t bear to be away from her eldest son when he started school. By then she also had a younger child. In this book she interviews current & former female politicians about their experiences. She acknowledges we have come a long way, but still have a long way to go.
Thanks @Jeg

Nute I like all the colors in your photo. It looks and feels like summer!🙂 The book sounds interesting. Yes, still a long way to go for equality for women in the acknowledgment of some progress. 2y
MrsMalaprop @Nute thanks 😊. Yes it‘s late Spring here or Kambarang, the Noongar (First people of the south west of Western Australia) season of birth, signified by warmer temperatures and an abundance of wildflowers ☀️❤️🙏. 2y
CarolynM Did you watch Ms Represented? Interesting to see who is willing to speak. 2y
MrsMalaprop Sure did @CarolynM & Strong Female Lead. 💪🏼 2y

Women should ‘carry themselves with the confidence of a mediocre white man‘. 🤭😆

Excellent. Read in one day. Highly recommend. Best op shop find for a while. Inscription shows it was given to Steve for his 65th birthday in May. I doubt he read it as I found it soon after. Might be difficult for some men to read and acknowledge.

@MrsMalaprop would you like it?

MrsMalaprop Love your review 😂, and yes I‘d love to read it. 🙏 3y
CarolynM 🤣 I'm imagining Steve's face as he opened his gift. At least he didn't bin it! 3y

An engaging, personally voiced memoir of life as a woman in Australian politics. I‘m sad to say that Ellis‘ description and analysis of the misogyny experienced by women in parliament in Australia didn‘t surprise me. I was disheartened to better understand how systemically and culturally entrenched these attitudes are in ‘the way politics is done‘. I think Ellis does a great job of showing how this is felt and experienced by a range of real women.

CarolynM I kind of want to read this and Julia Banks's book together, and I kind don't too. Why make myself even angrier about it all than I am already? 3y
ClairesReads @CarolynM this is a real vibe. I understand completely. 3y

If I‘d read this a year or so ago, I would have been more shocked. Sadly, the sexism, misogyny (and worse) of the Australian parliament has been well and truly exposed. It‘s hard to believe this stuff is still happening in 2021. Rage inducing 😡

Freespirit And then.. after all his bad behaviour Barnaby becomes the deputy PM…you couldn‘t make this stuff up Jen 😩 3y
JennyM @Freespirit I know! 🤯 3y
CarolynM @Freespirit I'd like to comment here, but I'm just lost for words, really😶😳😡 Kate Ellis was my parents' local member, they were sorry when she decided not to stand again. 3y

JennyM @CarolynM @Freespirit the sad thing is that I really wasn‘t shocked to read what absolute rubbish female MPs have to put up with. Disgusting behaviour that would be tolerated nowhere else. I think it would be an extremely difficult job and I can understand why Kate Ellis decided to step down. But the culture won‘t change unless we have more female & minority representation. Recent days makes me think change is still a long way off 😟 (edited) 3y
Jeg All very sad indeed. Can‘t believe that person is back where they are! 😡 3y
JennyM @Jeg baffling isn‘t it! Hope you are ok in WA - hoping this latest outbreak clears quickly 🤞 3y

I couldn‘t finish it not because it wasn‘t good I‘m just not very interested in this topic. It is well written and informative though.
