The Witchcraft of Salem Village
The Witchcraft of Salem Village | Shirley Jackson
15 posts | 12 read | 30 to read
Stories of magic, superstition, and witchcraft were strictly forbidden in the little town of Salem Village. But a group of young girls ignored those rules, spellbound by the tales told by a woman named Tituba. When questioned about their activities, the terrified girls set off a whirlwind of controversy as they accused townsperson after townsperson of being witches. Author Shirley Jackson examines in careful detail this horrifying true story of accusations, trials, and executions that shook a community to its foundations.

#BFCr4 #BFC Week 4 Check-in! 4/4 runs for the week (two of them on the same day, one in the morning and one in the evening). All 4 were on the treadmill due to smoke from the Kincade fire making the air quality iffy in Berkeley. Finished the tagged book, so 6/6 books for the challenge, so I'm increasing my goal to 9 books. Great week! 👍💪🏃‍♀️ #RunningonReading @wanderinglynn @BarbaraJean @Catlover23 @hermyknee

BarbaraJean Awesome week!! Hope the air quality clears up this week—both for your sake and for those in the affected areas! 1mo

Another treadmill #audiorun! (Yes, two in one day... In my defense, I spent most of the day sitting and reading, so I was getting fidgety. Also this means I got 4 runs in this week. 👍) #NFNov @rsteve388 @Clwojick #BFC #BFCr4 #RunningonReading

#TIL about the economic devastation caused by the Salem witch trials (in part because when people were released from prison post-hysteria, they had to pay the gov't for their stay in prison?? 😤)

Got some good #audiocooking in while I tried this new recipe and then enjoyed the fruits of my labor. 😋 I don't have a lot of practice cooking, so it's been hard to make time for cooking yummy meals with veggies and stuff, but I think this recipe is easy enough to fit into my schedule! Plus I made 3 servings in one go! 👍 #NFNov @Clwojick @rsteve388

2.2 mile treadmill #audiorun! Did surges, which is hard on a treadmill, but the air quality still isn't good enough for me to run outside. Continued listening to the tagged #audiobook for #NFNov! @Clwojick @rsteve388 #BFC #BFCr4 #runningonreading

RachelO Good going! Is the air quality improving any? 1mo
Caterina @RachelO Thanks! It's been moderate/yellow the past couple days, so I can leave my apartment with no problem, but I don't want to spend a long time outside or workout outside until it's in the good/green zone! 1mo

Kicked off #NFNov tonight by starting this #audiobook on my #audiorun! Running 3 miles on a treadmill sure is boring, so it was nice to have a good audiobook as company. I love Shirley Jackson, and I'm thinking that this can count as #truecrime for #NFNovbingo! @Clwojick @rsteve388

Scochrane26 I‘m getting ready to start going to a gym for winter, but treadmills are boring. I prefer to walk outside but not in cold. 1mo
Caterina @Scochrane26 I just tried a treadmill for the first time this week because the air quality has been bad from the Kincade fire, and I definitely want to run outside again as soon as I can!! But it is so nice to have the option for when the air quality is bad, or it's dark outside, or it's too cold! 1mo

MatchlessMarie My apt complex has a fitness center that is surprisingly almost never used I bring books with me all the time 1mo
Caterina @MatchlessMarie Same! Which is lucky because our fitness center is tiny and has only one treadmill! 😂 1mo

This nonfiction YA about the Salem Witch Trials certainly packs a punch! Filled with details about Salem Village at that time, and how a whole community succumbed to paranoia, this is an excellent introduction to the subject.

But you really can‘t go wrong with Shirley Jackson.

1. Tagged on audio, and The Bakeshop at the Corner of Pumpkin and Spice
2. 44! Library just reopened after renovations = 📚📚
3. Graphic novels, and reading books that have been made into movies, help break me out of a slump.

I was aghast several times while I listened to this book. I guess I forgot or maybe didn‘t know the details of the Salem witch trials. It is a short one, but Jackson does a great job of moving the story along, even with all of the details. The narrator is perfect. #authoramonth #nonfiction19

Soubhiville Another one I hadn‘t heard of! I‘m glad you liked it. 3mo

August‘s author is Shirley Jackson! I‘ve already read We Have Always Lived in the Castle and The Haunting of Hill House, so I wanted to try something a little different and I found her book The Witchcraft of Salem Village. When I was in school, I was interested in the Salem Witch Trials so I chose this short nonfiction book!
#authoramonth

KathyWheeler This was probably the first Shirley Jackson book I ever read — way back in 4th or 5th grade. Loved it. 3mo
mhillis @KathyWheeler I think I would have loved reading this book back then! 3mo
KathyWheeler @mhillis I did. Back then I also reread a lot; I think I read this book 3 or 4 times. 3mo

It‘s possible my middle name should have been “late” instead of Ann. I only read one #authoramonth for July. 😕 I‘m shooting for two on audio this month, maybe three if my hold comes in. #audioforthewin

Soubhiville That‘s not bad at all! I also only read one! Don‘t neglect your other reading, and as always, focus on reading books you enjoy 😉 4mo
Soubhiville (Also- the lottery is one of my school readings that has stuck with me more than any other!) 4mo
Bookzombie @Soubhiville Thanks for the reminder! 🙂 I read The Lottery in school too, but not any of her other short stories. I‘m looking forward to rereading it and reading the ones that are new to me. 4mo
mhillis Nice! I‘m planning to read it too 4mo

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I really enjoyed this ”just the facts” non-fictionalized telling of the Salem Witch Trials! It doesn't matter how many books I read on the subject, (and I have read a lot!) I always learn at Least one new thing in each book!

Shirley Jackson giving us the story of the Salem Witchcraft trials? Yes, please. What could be more frightening than her take on repression, mores and teenage evilinas? Not much, really. #favoritescarynonfiction #AllHallowsRead
