#weirdwords
@CBee

Sometimes using a longer phrase works; sometimes not. 🤣

IndoorDame 🤣🤣🤣 4d
CBee The elongated yellow fruit 😂😂😂 4d
peanutnine I love this! I feel like there are some authors out there who suffer from an abundance of periphrasis 😂 4d

wisherwishinguponastar This post caused me to fall down the #weirdword rabbit hole. Thanks! 4d
dabbe @wisherwishinguponastar When I was looking for examples, I couldn't really find one where the longer phrase was better. I tried! 🤣 4d

Not so much a #weirdword but rather a beautifully wistful one.

@CBee

BiblioLitten I love this word! 2w

A little fun maybe I can find my #weirdword Wednesday Yiddish in here ..

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=g9h_i-xIU3k

IndoorDame Awesome! 2w
vlwelser Dumb question from the stands.... Is Yiddish considered a dialect (of German?) or a separate language? 2w
TheBookHippie @vlwelser it is it‘s own language -it is however considered a Germanic language. Is that the right way to explain it @IndoorDame ? 2w
See All 6 Comments
IndoorDame @TheBookHippie sounds good to me. But you know way more Yiddish than I do, so I‘m really not the expert here… 2w
TheBookHippie @IndoorDame I know more than I know I know 🤣. It just comes out sometimes 👀 as far as a language - I‘m like that‘s what I was told is that actually correct 🙃 2w
CBee Awesome 👏🏻 2w

So when you say “Shhhh….. I‘m reading,” you‘re using a sibilant word. Also like a snake hissssssing 😊 I‘ve come across this word a handful of times recently so, figured I‘d use it for today‘s #weirdword!

peanutnine Love this! Thanks for sharing ☺️ 3w
CBee @peanutnine absolutely 💚😊 3w

Reading this Steinbeck account for #authoramonth and came across this #weirdword. I‘m loving it! What say you, @CBee ?

CBee I love it! Definitely weird 😊 I might use this word the next time I‘m feeling grumpy 😂😂 3w
Amiable @CBee I‘m thinking I can use this to call out for a sick day: “I can‘t come into work—I‘ve got a bad case of the mullygrubs.” My boss will be like, I don‘t know what THAT is, but it sounds horrible so take all the time you need! 😄 (edited) 3w
Soubhiville Oooo, good word! 3w

CBee @Amiable 😂😂😂😂 I really kind of hope you try that 🤭🤭 3w
Amiable @CBee I have a friend who actually got a sick day when she called in and said she had a case of “anal glaucoma” (i.e. she “couldn‘t see her ass coming into work.”) 😄 I can‘t get away with that, though—I work at a hospital and it‘s tough to pass off a fake disease! 😀 3w
CBee @Amiable I think I‘d like your friend 😂😂😂 3w
Prairiegirl_reading @Amiable one of my responsibilities at work is to take sick calls and believe me if I hear the word anal it really doesn‘t matter what comes after it. I‘m good, you‘re sick. 🤣🤣 3w
Amiable @Prairiegirl_reading Ha ha, right? 😄😄 3w
Amiable @CBee Yeah, she‘s “wicked pissa,” as we say around these parts. 😀 3w

This was on my instagram feed this morning. Perfect for #weirdword Wednesday as a new to me word and also perfectly describing my current state. I think I will be using this word a lot.

#weirdword

One of those words that just sounds weird to me.

dabbe This word always makes me feel like I'm swearing, especially if I emphasize the “EFF“ part. 🤣 2mo

Hey, it's #weirdwords Wednesday & my word is epicaricacy. A synonym of another favorite #weirdword schadenfreude. This word was brought to you by the second day of failure to elect a speaker. Karma may take it's time, but it gets there in the end.
@CBee

CBee Ah, yes. The speaker debacle 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ It‘s ridiculous. 3mo
MrsMalaprop We use schadenfreude a bit, but I didn‘t know there was an English equivalent! Thanks 🙏 3mo
Aimeesue The whole failing speaker votes thing (a much of politics in general these days) reminds me of those WWE wrestling shows from my youth: a whole lot of posturing and drama, which really mean nothing and are just designed to string us along and take our money. 🤨 3mo

vivastory @CBee Incredibly ridiculous. 3mo
vivastory @MrsMalaprop I didn't learn about this word until yesterday. It was a lucky find! 3mo
vivastory @Aimeesue It just emphasizes that there are certain politicians who have no interest in doing anything about actual policy, but just want to look good to their constituents & “stick it to their opponent.“ Even when their opponent is in their same party, lol. It really does mean nothing, although I think it would just be *chef's kiss* if Hakeem Jeffries was elected as speaker. 3mo
CBee @Aimeesue PERFECT comparison!! 3mo
Aimeesue @vivastory 💯 I completely support allowing the adults to lead 3mo
Aimeesue @CBee Oh, How I wish it weren't! 3mo
CBee @Aimeesue same 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ 3mo

Supercilious is a #weirdword that when repeated multiple times, loses its meaning.

This phenomenon is called semantic satiation. It happens because our brains translate words into ideas. And so when a word is repeated, the brain just focuses on the sound of the word and not the meaning, which is why it can start to sound like gibberish.

How cool is that?

rockpools Very cool! 3mo

I love a good #weirdword, so a day late (sorry!) I‘m joining @CBee and sharing a favorite. I love everything about this word! It feels like silk in my mouth and has an unusual spelling. What are your favorite weird words?

BookHoarder32 I‘ve heard this word but have never seen it spelled out! I always thought it was just milk toast. Lol, thank you! I learned something new 😊 (edited) 3mo
HardcoverHearts Interesting! I always assumed it was a British word. Who knew? 3mo
CBee @BookHoarder32 I thought it was milk toast too 😂😂 3mo

CBee @Megabooks I must start using this in every day life 🧐 “Jeeves, must you be so milquetoast?” Not that I know anybody named Jeeves 😂😂 (edited) 3mo
Deblovestoread Yep, I‘ve been spelling it wrong as well. 😂 3mo
Megabooks @BookHoarder32 @CBee @Deblovestoread I think the spelling is a lot of what makes this wonderfully weird and definitely not milquetoast! 😉😂 3mo
Megabooks @HardcoverHearts it sounds British doesn‘t it? 3mo
CBee @Megabooks most definitely not milquetoast! It‘s rolling off the tongue now Meg 😂 3mo
BookHoarder32 It would be one of those words at the spelling bee that we‘d completely blow - m-i-l-k… 🤦‍♀️ 3mo
