Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell
Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell | Susanna Clarke
Susanna Clarke's brilliant novel is an utterly compelling, epic tale of nineteenth-century England and the way two very different magicians, who, as teacher and pupil and then as rivals, emerge to change its history. In the year 1806, in the throes of the Napoleonic Wars, most people believe magic to be dead in England--until the reclusive Mr. Norrell of Hurtfew Abbey reveals his powers and becomes a celebrity overnight. Soon, another magician emerges; the young, handsome, and daring Jonathan Strange. He becomes Norrell's student, and the two join forces in the war against France. But as Strange is increasingly drawn to the wildest, most perilous forms of magic, he risks sacrificing not only his friendship with Norrell, but everything else that he holds dear. An international bestseller published in 31 countries, Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell is a tour de force that has captured the imagination of readers worldwide.

1. I've had commitment issues when it's come to Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell.
2. There are lots. I don't reread as often as I used to, but every year I reread at least one title. Different seasons in life, different headspace, creates a different experience. Gaiman titles are always on the reread list.
3. On Goodreads it says 605. That is inaccurate, it's much larger.

Good morning! Today I starts with an audiobook and my new blue tea the #24B4Monday Yesterday I only read 31 minutes. I hope today I'll have more reading time.

julesG Same here. Hardly any time reading yesterday. Enjoy your blue tea. And the book. 1mo
Buechersuechtling Curious about both, What do you think about the book❓ Last year or so I tried to read it but it wasn‘t for me, I gave in after only a few pages. But I‘m also curious about the blue tea. What does it taste after and what is it made of❓ 1mo
Moony @Buechersuechtling I like the audio book! The book I borrowed and I read it parrallel but it's harder to read than to hear 😆 1mo

Moony @julesG thank you! 1mo
julesG @Buechersuechtling I gave up on the book. I bought it soon after it was published, because of all the good reviews and struggled to page 200+ It lay around for ages I tried it again and then -having found Litsy and learned that bailing is okay- I eventually bailed. I watched the TV show, which was quite good. 1mo
Buechersuechtling @julesG Until I read your comment it didn‘t even know that there was a TV show. But I also can imagine that it‘s like @Moony says, that the audiobook would suit me more/better. 4w
julesG @Buechersuechtling six episodes, or so. I should have tried the audiobook, but now that I know how it ends, I'm not interested in going back to the book. 4w
Buechersuechtling @julesG Oh dear, in my eyes it deserves applause 👏🏼 to having made it to page 200. I bailed way faster at about page 20 or 25, I think. I just couldn‘t cope with the writing style. – But, seriously, did you toil through all the books you didn‘t like before Litsy❓😯 4w
julesG @Buechersuechtling Most, yes. But I often put them aside to read again at a later time. I had about a metre of shelfspace with books I've wanted to return to. It felt so freeing getting rid of those. I always thought that I had spent money on the book, I should read it. Glad I've learned that bailing is okay. 4w
Buechersuechtling @julesG Interesting. I never do that. Putting a book aside because I don‘t like it, thinking that maybe I return to it later in my life. But I can understand that you felt uncomfortable bailing on books you spent money on. I think I‘d feel the same – but I‘m a library-books-kid which might (partly) explains why I don‘t have that kind of qualmish feelings when it comes to bailing. 🤷🏽‍♀️ 4w
julesG @Buechersuechtling Having spent my early years basically being raised in a library, I consider myself a library patron by birth. Sadly, even our 300k inhabitants town library doesn't have a wide range of English books available. I keep using my friend's library card in the UK for ebook loans. 4w

So today a little bit *hehe* #audiocleaning with the unshortened #audiobook of this #chunkster. 😊 I borrowed the book from a friend and I'm very happy that my library has it as #audiobook because for more than 1000 pages I need very very long. So I can hear and read it. 🤣

ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Love this book so much! How is the audio? 2mo
Moony @ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled very good! It's bery funny to read and hear parallel. XD 2mo
Buechersuechtling @Moony Oh, I quickly bailed on this one so I‘m very curious what you post about it. If my library had an audio-copy I‘d be sure I‘d give it another try. But as physical copy – no. The writing annoyed me. 2mo

If you are scared of long books, then this may not be the book for you. But, if that doesn‘t deter you, prepare for a wonderful journey. I really enjoyed reading this book. I‘m torn on how I feel about the ending... without spoiling anything, I‘ll just say the journey of it was wonderful. And I‘ll be thinking about this book and the world of it for a long time. Definitely something to pick up if you want to drift into a magical place.

Can we discuss?
I read it, watched TV series, now audiobook

-Multiple plots - strange vs norrell, theoretical vs practical magic, man with thistledown hair
-So much backstory as if there are so many other parts of this world
-Magic is obviously a big part of the book but it doesn't describe the mechanics like in Harry Potter

I feel like I'm reading a Jane Austen novel with magic instead of politics or a gothic novel with footnotes
Thoughts?

Fridameetslucy I enjoyed it too. I didn‘t finish watching the movie but the book stayed with me. I would need to read it again to talk about it 2mo
Aims42 I loved the book and enjoyed the mini-series too. I need to re-read it again too 2mo

emz711 @cariashley good, a lot more plot driven. Not really the same as the book where you're trying to figure out wtf is going on and why she's going off in directions with the story 2mo
Aims42 @emz711 Hmm.... it‘s a tough one to catergorize 🤔 I‘d say your comparison to Jane Austen in terms of the time period and society is accurate. Then there‘s the magic aspect. It‘s definitely not Harry Potter meets Jane Austen. It‘s just a odd book to describe, haha! Some books just aren‘t for everyone. There‘s been plenty of hyped up books that I just didn‘t like. This is my first review of a personal favorite...while long, no part of the book feels extraneous, as the two magicians spar, verbally at first, and then-but I've already said too much haven't I? What makes this a winner in my book is the Dickens/Austen savor to the writing, the rounded characters, and the wonderful proceedings which start on the first page and won't let up till the last (which contains a nice double take in the final line).gold!

At the end of the day, Squidapus gave this one a pick. Despite thinking the book had many flaws he still never thought about bailing or putting it down. The book picks up interest dramatically when Strange and the main antagonist show up but it takes 200+ pages to get there! And that's the book in a nutshell; stuffed full of meandering prose that inundates a good story. There's world building and then there's writing your own Wikipedia article.

I forgot to mention Squidapus started this book! Surprising that he hasn't read it considering it's popularity. He's enjoying it and breezing through it...even though he doesn't like the characters. Or the pacing. Or the completely extraneous chapters that add nothing to the plot. I guess it's the prose? Also, get your book names under control Litsy, this has like 10 entries. Side note, this made me remember why I never get Mass Market Paperbacks.

Clarke weaves her own history of magic into the history of Britain. The lore of the Raven King is one of the best parts of the book. While the protagonists are sometimes irrational, the dialogue is superb. One small downside is that the reader fully knows the villain's plans long before the characters, which leads to prolonged dramatic irony. I hope she writes a sequel.

This reminded me why I love fantasy so much. What an adventure! Two English magicians decide to bring magic back to England, but their styles are very different. This leads to a quarrel and separation but so much damage has been done, they will need to work together to correct it. Epic storytelling that spans about 10 years, this book is an undertaking that is well worth the time. Immerse yourself in the world of Strange & Norrell. You won‘t be sorry for it.📚⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
