Angela's Ashes: A Memoir | Frank McCourt
140 posts | 365 read | 3 reading | 86 to read
A Pulitzer Prize-winning, #1 New York Times bestseller, Angela's Ashes is Frank McCourt's masterful memoir of his childhood in Ireland.“When I look back on my childhood I wonder how I managed to survive at all. It was, of course, a miserable childhood: the happy childhood is hardly worth your while. Worse than the ordinary miserable childhood is the miserable Irish childhood, and worse yet is the miserable Irish Catholic childhood.” So begins the luminous memoir of Frank McCourt, born in Depression-era Brooklyn to recent Irish immigrants and raised in the slums of Limerick, Ireland. Frank’s mother, Angela, has no money to feed the children since Frank’s father, Malachy, rarely works, and when he does he drinks his wages. Yet Malachy—exasperating, irresponsible, and beguiling—does nurture in Frank an appetite for the one thing he can provide: a story. Frank lives for his father’s tales of Cuchulain, who saved Ireland, and of the Angel on the Seventh Step, who brings his mother babies. Perhaps it is story that accounts for Frank’s survival. Wearing rags for diapers, begging a pig’s head for Christmas dinner and gathering coal from the roadside to light a fire, Frank endures poverty, near-starvation and the casual cruelty of relatives and neighbors—yet lives to tell his tale with eloquence, exuberance, and remarkable forgiveness. Angela’s Ashes, imbued on every page with Frank McCourt’s astounding humor and compassion, is a glorious book that bears all the marks of a classic.

We come from the land of the ice and snow
From the midnight sun, where the hot springs flow
The hammer of the gods
W'ell drive our ships to new lands
To fight the horde, and sing and cry

Angela‘s Ashes is one of my all-time favorites! I have read & re-read it many times. I used to listen to the audiobook every day on my way to work bc I love Frank McCourt‘s accent. But I had to stop listening to it in the car bc my little boy started saying, “oh, for fuck‘s sake!” 😳

🤣 This makes me think of my grandpa and his response if he knew I had waved at the Queen when I was in England and her car passed by while I was standing outside Buckingham palace.

I had to post this picture of the hubs ( @TheWhiteHatter ) doing some #AudioCooking ❤️ He recently found out that a majority of his DNA is Irish. He‘s always had an affinity for Irish things and he was born on St. Patrick‘s Day, so it‘s kind of perfect. Here he is listening to the tagged book, wearing his hand knitted Irish sweater, and preparing corned beef and cabbage. ☘️

4thhouseontheleft Did he take an Ancestry test? I have Irish in my blood too. 😃 And there must be something in the air, I just posted about my hubby, too. 😂 6mo
LeahBergen Wow. That‘s like the trifecta of Irishness right there! 😆😆 6mo

ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled My husband found out recently while out of town that he surprisingly has some Irish ancestry too (thanks, Ancestry), so when he came home we had decorated the front door with Gaelic “welcome home” words and pictures of Liam Neeson 😆 🇮🇪 6mo
Laura317 Sounds a bit like me. I‘m a St. Patrick‘s Day baby, love all things Irish, and my Ancestry.com dna came back Irish (and Scottish). Fitting for where we live. 6mo

Ok, this book has been sitting on my shelf for ages! Vowing to read more real books and fewer e-books, as I have a gazillion... this book is amazing about the author's Irish Catholic upbringing, devastating and funny at once, no wonder it won all the awards... now if Della would let me finish...

I adore this book! The movie that was made on this novel isn‘t the best but it‘s entertaining. The book broaches some difficult subjects such as absentee parents, addiction, religion and death. I 100% recommend it!

I enjoyed this one, immensely. The no-quotation mark thing really bothered me for the first hundred pages but then I got used to it. It seemed to make the story go by faster. The writing style was a perfect match for the poverty Frankie and his family lived in. I‘ll check out the sequel ‘Tis, to see where Frank ends up in America.

Have you seen the movie adaption of Angela‘s Ashes? Is it worth checking out?

LazyDays I watched the movie before I read the book, and I greatly enjoyed both of them! This is one of my favorites, it made me ugly cry in some parts.💗💗 12mo

McCourt is an impressive storyteller- and what a story! Yes there is tremendous poverty and sadness, and yet he is able to incorporate so much humor at the same time. I was laughing out loud on the plane the other day and wondering if I in fact was not supposed to be chuckling while reading this book? 🤔 I laughed and I also cried and that's the sign of a brilliant writer.

Mixed feelings! Told from the POV of the child Frank, here's a catalogue of disease, death and desperate poverty, shot through with humour and absurdity. McCourt is an engaging storyteller and young Frank is a bright, resourceful lad with an appetite for life who, clearly, does all right for himself at last. But there's my problem: there's a whiff of "all's well that ends well" about it and I am not ok with that.
