Paris: The Memoir
Paris: The Memoir | Paris Hilton
2 posts | 2 read | 8 to read
A MILLION MEANINGS IN A SINGLE NAME... Heiress. Party girl. Problem child. Selfie taker. Model. Cover girl. Reality star. These are labels that have been attached to Paris Hilton by others. Founder. Entrepreneur. Pop Culture Maker. Innovator. Survivor. Activist. Daughter. Sister. Wife. Mom.These are roles Paris Hilton embraces now as a fully realized woman.Paris rose to prominence as an heiress to the Hilton Hotels empire, but cultivated her fame and fortune as the It Girl of the aughts, a time marked by the burgeoning twenty-four-hour entertainment news cycle and the advent of the celebrity blog. Using her celebrity brand, Paris set in motion her innovative business ventures, while being the constant target of tabloid culture that dismissively wrote her off as "famous for being famous." With tenacity, sharp business acumen, and grit, she built a global empire and, in the process, became a truly modern icon beloved around the world. Now, with courage, honesty, and humor, Paris Hilton is ready to take stock, place it all in context, and share her story with the world. Separating the creation from the creator, the brand from the ambassador, Paris: The Memoir strips away all we thought we knew about a celebrity icon, taking us back to a privileged childhood lived through the lens of undiagnosed ADHD and teenage rebellion that triggered a panicked--and perilous--decision by her parents. Led to believe they were saving their child's life, Paris's mother and father had her kidnapped and sent to a series of "emotional growth boarding schools," where she survived almost two years of verbal, physical, and sexual abuse. In the midst of a hell we now call the "troubled teen industry," Paris created a beautiful inner world where the ugliness couldn't touch her. She came out, resolving to trust no one but herself as she transformed that fantasy world into a multibillion-dollar reality.Recounting her perilous journey through pre-#MeToo sexual politics with grace, dignity, and just the right amount of sass, Paris: The Memoir tracks the evolution of celebrity culture through the story of the figure at its leading edge, full of defining moments and marquee names. Most important, Paris shows us her path to peace while she challenges us to question our role in her story and in our own. Welcome to Paris.

Color me shocked, but this was a really good memoir! I went in with low expectations, but I found Paris‘s story really compelling, especially her very harrowing journey through discipline/reform schools. She has testified before Congress about her experiences. CWs ⬇️ She has more grace than I would have had in forgiving her parents. She tells some party stories, but this is about her career and personal life. She is 💯 the OG influencer!

Megabooks She experienced physical and sexual assault, solitary confinement, and drugging at these schools and is graphic in explaining it, which I think is important, but at times hard to hear. 4d
squirrelbrain I read an extract from this book in the UK press, about the ‘schools‘ that she was sent to - really shocking. 4d
Megabooks @squirrelbrain yes! There‘s a whole industry funneling troubled teens to them with often disastrous results. I think it speaks to her resilience how she‘s been able to recover. And she ran four times. She never stopped fighting, and she continues to fight for accountability and the schools to be closed. 4d

Megabooks @squirrelbrain David Sedaris‘ sister who committed suicide was sent to one, and she believed it contributed to her mental illness and inability to live in normal society as an adult. 4d
squirrelbrain And yet didn‘t there used to be reality TV programmes where they sent ‘troubled‘ kids to such places and filmed them? I guess that is why no-one knew what they were really like. 4d
Megabooks @squirrelbrain yes, and they probably didn‘t show what was actually happening. All the major talk shows sent kids there too. It‘s a reasonably large industry here that is not well regulated and often (always?) does more harm than good. She talks a lot about the shame survivors experience. 4d
Chelsea.Poole I‘m also shocked! Thanks for the tag! Reminds me of this one—have you read? 4d
britt_brooke Ooh, thanks for tagging me!! Def stacking. 4d
Cinfhen Oh wow!!! I‘m definitely going to listen to this one!! BTW, Roseanne Bart‘s daughter wrote a shocking memoir about her stay too at these reform schools- they sound terribly abusive and downright criminal 4d
KathyWheeler I‘m going to listen to this now. I had changed my mind about her years ago when she was on an episode of Supernatural. She showed such a sense of humor about herself in doing an episode that poked fun at her. I appreciated that. But I didn‘t know about the school thing. 4d
Megabooks @KathyWheeler yes, she really surprised me about being in on the joke too, but she stands up for herself when people go too far with it (think the South Park episode). I hope you like it! 3d
Megabooks @Cinfhen it is truly terrifying that these places are still open and unregulated! 3d
Megabooks @britt_brooke I think you‘d like it! 3d
Megabooks @Chelsea.Poole I don‘t know how I missed that in 2021! Her story sounds very similar to Paris‘s! 3d
KathyWheeler @Megabooks I heard about that South Park episode but I didn‘t see it. 2d
Megabooks @KathyWheeler she was upset about how she and Britney were portrayed (basically as complete rich b*tch talentless idiots), but she seemed just as upset that her fans were portrayed as stupid or vapid. She has a massive amount of respect for her fans, and doesn‘t appreciate humor that disrespects them either. 2d
Megabooks @KathyWheeler I‘ve seen the episode several times, and it‘s not particularly funny, but South Park hasn‘t aged well imo. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2d
KathyWheeler @Megabooks Thanks for telling me about it. I never consistently watched South Park because I didn‘t find it particularly funny (except for the Loch Ness monster) so I‘ve missed a lot. 2d
