I Have Some Questions for You
I Have Some Questions for You | Rebecca Makkai
In the riveting new novel from the author of the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award finalist The Great Believers, a woman must reckon with her past when new details surface about a tragedy at her elite New England boarding school A fortysomething podcaster and mother of two, Bodie Kane is content to leave her past in the past--the family history that marred her adolescence and the murder of one of her high school classmates, Thalia Keith. Though the circumstances surrounding Thalia's death and the conviction of the school's athletic trainer, Omar Evans, are the subject of intense fascination online, Bodie prefers--needs--to let sleeping dogs lie. But when she's invited back to Granby, the elite New England boarding school where she spent four largely miserable years, to teach a course, Bodie finds herself inexorably drawn to the case and its increasingly apparent flaws. In their rush to convict Omar, did the school and the police overlook other suspects? Is the real killer still out there? As she falls down the rabbit hole she was so determined to avoid, Bodie begins to wonder if she wasn't as much of an outsider at Granby as she'd thought; if, perhaps, back in 1995, she knew something that might have held the key to solving the case. One of the most acclaimed American writers working today, Rebecca Makkai has reinvented herself with each of her brilliant works of fiction. In I Have Some Questions for You, she has created an irresistible mash-up of a classic boarding school novel, a transfixing mystery, and a deeply felt examination of one woman's reckoning with her past--how our perceptions of who we were shape who we are, and how we can learn to let go. Timely, hypnotic, and populated with a cast of unforgettable characters, it is her finest achievement yet.

I really enjoyed this - went in with low expectations as some reviews weren‘t great. I do see that it is long and she does squeeze a lot of current hot topics in there. For a while I thought, oh this is a literary work about a woman in mid life crisis - not a mystery really. And then the mystery ramps up again and becomes the focus. I loved the setting, and the protagonist remembering her old school days. ⬇️

Centique It holds up to light violence against young women, through all the possible perpetrators, and doing this while inside a β€œmystery genre story” (which so often start with a dead young woman) was an interesting angle. 2d

I did end up finishing this on audio. It wasn‘t totally terrible, but it was way too long. I‘m with others that this true crime podcast within a book is played out. And I don‘t get the point of the Me Too storyline with Bodie‘s husband. πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈπŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈπŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ Just for the sheer amount of time I wasted, this gets a pan. Needed better editing. πŸ’―πŸ’―πŸ’―

AmyG Yes, the story with Bodie‘s husband. It was weak. 5d
Megabooks @AmyG exactly! What was the point of including it? Didn‘t seem to tie with the main point of the book at all. 5d
Jess Ugh. This depresses me. I loved all her other books and was looking so forward to this one. I‘m only 100 pages in but can already see what you mean. 5d

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I LOVED this. The kind of absorbing read where I couldn‘t wait to get back to it. I adored the way it was written - how she wrote to β€œyou”, the imagined sections of different suspects committing the crime, the motif scrutinizing violence against women. There are many layers, like the reliability of memory, #MeToo, cancel culture, and wrongful incarceration. Makkai has some questions for all of us, and there are no easy answers. #BOTM

jlhammar Fantastic review! I agree completely - so smart, so many layers and so absorbing. I also thought the ending was well done and all the more impactful for being realistic. (edited) 1w

A fun read. A podcaster returns to teach a class, at the fancy boarding school of her childhood where she was an outsider and her once roommate was murdered. Reads like a mystery, layered with interesting takes on the #metoo movement and grooming, collective memory, race and privilege, the exploitative nature of true crime, wrongful imprisonment and so much more. Sharp and nuanced, I found the ending unsatisfying but all the more realistic for it.

Makkai is a talented writer and there‘s a lot going on here but it took wayyyyy too long for this book to make an impact. Better editing would have elevated this from so-so to SO GOOD. There are traces of her previous writing style but the whole podcast troupe is starting to wear thin for me. A professor returns to her boarding school 23 years after her roommate there was murdered to teach a mini class on podcast production. πŸ‘‡πŸ½

Cinfhen With the help of her student sleuths and the advantage of age, Bodie begins to realize the wrong person was convicted in her roommate‘s murder. Lots of social commentary on elitism, memories, misogyny, race, cancel culture and the infatuation with true crime and dead females. Too bad this book dragged because there was a good book buried inside these pages. 2w

#MyWeekInBails

Normally I like Makkai; normally I like an addiction memoir, but about halfway into each, I started just dreading going back. The Makkai was slow and dull. I just couldn‘t bring myself to care about any of the characters. Stash was equally about divorce and addiction, and I just wasn‘t enjoying it. πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ

AmyG I can only say that at 59% in the book-the Makkai story seriously got better. A long way to go, but I am racing through the last 20%. 2w
Cinfhen I‘m at 70% in the Makkai and it‘s STILL REALLY DRAGGING IMHO - im just too invested at this point to quick - but it‘s a disappointment 2w
Megabooks @AmyG really… πŸ€”πŸ€” I‘ll consider going back then, but I think I‘m going to continue with the new book I started this afternoon. I need a 24 hour break for sure. I just wasn‘t feeling Bodie or Granby… πŸ˜’ 2w

Megabooks @Cinfhen wow! Two very different opinions! I may get back on the library list for the audiobook. I don‘t have any holds left now, but I should get some space freed up soon. 2w
Cinfhen I do like the audio but I know you‘re not wild about Julia Whelan - as a #BorrowNotBuy it‘s ok but o still think it‘s a bit of a disappointment 2w
Megabooks @Cinfhen yeah, it will definitely be a library book for me if I also try the audio. 2w
ChaoticMissAdventures This is so interesting to see. Makkai's Great Believers is 1 of my all time favorites, but I bailed on this one at 25% because I was just bored. I don't think I can justify dragging myself through 60-70% of a boring book for the good 30% at the end. It's too bad I know she worked hard on it. 2w
Megabooks @ChaoticMissAdventures πŸ’―πŸ’―πŸ’― relate to this!! Music for Wartime is an all-time favorite short story collection, but I agree this wasn‘t her best. 2w

A murder podcast host gets pulled back into a 20 year old case from her own past β€” the murder of her roommate at her boarding school when she was a teenager. Looking back now as an adult, and digging into the memories of her fellow classmates, she sees events in a new light. It‘s a slightly long-winded but totally engrossing mystery, with a heaping side of social commentary on cancel culture, violence against women, and classism.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ This focuses on the unraveling of Thalia Keith‘s death, and cleverly, the mystery also acts as a vehicle for addressing various crimes against women. To me, that was the most interesting part. I‘m just over the podcast trope, so overall, this was fine. I didn‘t really like Bodie, so that hindered my enjoyment. Second person narration is so hard to pull off. Makkai does it well structurally, but I‘m not sure it was effective in this story.

HeatherBookNerd I liked it, but it didn‘t completely blow me away. I did not love the second person narration. 2w

Bodie is a successful podcaster who returns to her former boarding school to teach a class. As one of the students asks to make a podcast about Bodie‘s former room-mate, who was murdered during Bodie‘s time there, Bodie has to ask herself if that is what she hoped for all along.

I really liked this but I‘m giving it 4 stars rather than 5. Parts of it seemed really slow; in fact I had to check how long the physical book was as it felt ⬇️

squirrelbrain VERY slow in places. Bodie had an interesting back story that didn‘t seem to fully connect with the rest of the story. There were a few too many characters. 1mo
squirrelbrain I did like; the references to many other murdered / abused women. Bodie had her own β€˜me-too‘ issues with something her ex-husband did, that fitted in nicely to the story. Always love an academic setting. I usually prefer my endings to be nicely wrapped up in a bow and this one wasn‘t, but it worked. 1mo

BarbaraBB Seems very interesting. Is it as good as 1mo
Megabooks I‘m hopping my library gets it, but I‘m planning to buy it if they don‘t. I do find her books bit slow paced in general. 1mo
squirrelbrain Can you believe I haven‘t read The Great Believers?! @BarbaraBB I‘ve heard so many good things about it, and this one feels quite β€˜ordinary‘ when compared to what I‘ve heard about Believers. Indeed, I‘ve just seen a review included in the Crime / Mystery section of The Guardian newspaper; it‘s not β€˜literary fiction‘ by any means. 1mo
squirrelbrain @Megabooks - see my comment to Barbara. It might be a #borrownotbuy. I really liked it, but it certainly wasn‘t ground-breaking or unique. 1mo
Librarybelle I like this cover way more than the US cover! 1mo
BarbaraBB It sounds completely different from her earlier work. Fascinating. And I can enjoy a good thriller so am stacking! 1mo
Cortg @BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain I have a copy of The Great Believers but haven‘t read it yet. I really do wish there was more time in the day! 1mo

#300KBirthdayGiveaway #litfluence @wanderinglynn
Congratulations on this incredible achievement! I always enjoy your posts and I love your reviews! The one book I would love to receive is tagged above. I know it won't be released until 2/21 but I would happily wait. If I had to choose a book that's already been published it would be White Oleander, it's an all time favorite of mine that I have just never purchased. πŸŽ‰ CONGRATS AGAIN! πŸ‘

wanderinglynn Thank you! 😘 And thanks for entering! 2mo

Time for an Oh Reader tea break! Was so excited to have the new issue arrive yesterday. Tagged is one of the new and upcoming titles in the β€œOh Reader‘s TBR” feature. I love Makkai so can‘t wait (out Feb 21).

JamieArc I usually get these from Barnes and Noble but I should really get a subscription. 4mo

Out 2/21/2023

And a hunt for an ARC begins.

jlhammar Yay, so exciting! I hadn't heard about this one yet. I've really enjoyed all of her books. 8mo
ChaoticMissAdventures @jlhammar she is so fantastic, I follow her on twitter where she has been talking about writing this for a bit now (mixed in with her deep dive of zillow houses lol) I am super exciting, it sounds like it is totally different book for her. 8mo
