Three Moments of an Explosion
Three Moments of an Explosion: Stories | China Miéville
NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY The Washington Post • NPR • The Guardian • Kirkus Reviews • The fiction of multiple award–winning author China Miéville is powered by intelligence and imagination. Like George Saunders, Karen Russell, and David Mitchell, he pulls from a variety of genres with equal facility, employing the fantastic not to escape from reality but instead to interrogate it in provocative, unexpected ways.   London awakes one morning to find itself besieged by a sky full of floating icebergs. Destroyed oil rigs, mysteriously reborn, clamber from the sea and onto the land, driven by an obscure but violent purpose. An anatomy student cuts open a cadaver to discover impossibly intricate designs carved into a corpse’s bones—designs clearly present from birth, bearing mute testimony to . . . what?  Of such concepts and unforgettable images are made the twenty-eight stories in this collection—many published here for the first time. By turns speculative, satirical, and heart-wrenching, fresh in form and language, and featuring a cast of damaged yet hopeful seekers who come face-to-face with the deep weirdness of the world—and at times the deeper weirdness of themselves—Three Moments of an Explosion is a fitting showcase for one of literature’s most original voices.Praise for Three Moments of an Explosion  “China Miéville is dazzling. His latest collection of short stories, Three Moments of an Explosion, crowds virtuosity into every sentence.”—The New York Times   “You can’t talk about [China] Miéville without using the word ‘brilliant.’ . . . His wit dazzles, his humour is lively, and the pure vitality of his imagination is astonishing.”—Ursula K. Le Guin, The Guardian   “[A] gripping collection . . . Miéville expertly mixes science fiction, fantasy and surrealism. . . . Amid the longer stories are more cerebral, poetic flash pieces that will haunt the reader beyond the pages of this exceptional book.”—The Washington Post   “The stories shine . . . with a winkling brilliance.”—The Seattle Times   “Mind-bending excursions into the fantastic.”—NPR   “Bradbury meets Borges, with Lovecraft gibbering tumultuously just out of hearing.”—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)   “Three Moments of an Explosion is a book filled with fabulous oddities.”—Entertainment Weekly   “Miéville moves effortlessly among realism, fantasy, and surrealism. . . . His characters, whether ordinary witnesses to extraordinary events or lunatics operating out of inexplicable compulsions, are invariably well drawn and compelling.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)From the Hardcover edition.

I‘ve always enjoyed Miéville‘s novels and I was not disappointed in this collection of short stories. Some were much better than others, but as a whole, I really liked the sometimes bizarre imaginings of his many worlds in these stories. I do think I love his novels more, but this collection has just added to my appreciation of China Miéville as an author. 4/5âï¸

This is my #LPMBC Group C (short stories) pick this month, so I won‘t say much. I love getting out of my comfort zone, so it was good to read a sci fi/fantasy/horror collection because I usually read literary fiction ones. There were a lot of medical ðŸ‘🻠and military themes, which was fun for me. Some stories didn‘t work for me, but there were quite a few good ones.

@Readergrrl I‘ll let you know when I get it in the mail.

vivastory One of my favorites of all time. There are a few pieces that are forever seared into my mind. 2y

I enjoyed the weirdness and unique ideas in this collection, but it lost some steam for me in the second half. A light pick.

I‘m planning on mailing this tomorrow, @Megabooks . I‘ll send you the tracking number when I have it. 😊

Hey, #GroupC! 😊 What do you guys think of these?

(The Diving Pool is apparently novellas rather than short stories, but I decided to include it anyway because if the page count is right, it looks like the novellas must all be on the short side.)

Librarians of Litsy! I have a question! Last night after finishing Chiang's phenomenal Story of Your Life I checked my local library catalog to see if they had any collections by Miéville, aside from previously read Three Moments etc. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that *all* physical Miéville books have been removed from the collection. The only options now are e-book & audio. Why would this happen? I know that books get weeded out, but 👇

vivastory this is the first time I have encountered all of an author's works being removed! 😡 Pictured are four Miéville books I've checked out. I enjoyed all of these, & two are among my favorites of all time. 3y
MicheleinPhilly The branch of the Free Library of Philadelphia that I volunteered with through library school had a policy of “no checkouts for 1 year = weed.†Your library may have a similar policy. 3y
TrishB In other questions, I have never read this author, what do you recommend? 3y
See All 13 Comments
vivastory @TrishB Good question... I loved his short story collection Three Moments of an Explosion. I think it provides a good sampling of his style. I also loved Kraken, but am reluctant to recommend it to someone who hasn't read him before due to size 3y
vivastory @MicheleinPhilly That would explain it, but due to COVID-19 related closures I wonder if they altered those rules 3y
KathyWheeler My favorite of his is The City and The City. It does seem odd that all physical copies are gone from the library. 3y
vivastory @KathyWheeler City & the City is another fave of mine. I thought it was very very strange....I almost wonder if a Mieville super fan checked them out and never returned them....there were 13 of them! 3y
KathyWheeler @vivastory That‘s a lot! 3y
vivastory @Leftcoastzen What is especially crazy about this article is the fact that 86% of e-books have to be purchased again by the library after 24 months, even if they haven't been checked out. That's not right! 3y
TrishB Thanks ðŸ‘🻠I‘m not a big short story fan! 3y
vivastory @TrishB You might also like 3y
Hooked_on_books I was talking to a librarian at my local library today about weeding the collection. Same idea of no checkouts for a while means bye-bye books, but she‘s taking the pandemic into account this year. Hopefully other libraries do the same. I realize they can‘t keep them all, but it seems a shame to miss out on books one might discover years later. 3y

My #BookSpin from way back in December is now done read. Yay! It took a while but it was worth as all China Mieville's books I've read. I have to be honest, some stories were a bit too complex/strange/abstract for me, but others were simply awesome, his imagination is amazing. A pick!

And since today is the best day of the month when the #BookSpinBingo card is revealed, here is mine, Thank again for all you do @TheAromaOfBooks!

I probably wouldn‘t have said pick if I didn‘t love the final story so much, but I‘m still on the inertia of such a nice ending that I‘m probably rating the book higher than I would initially. It‘s by no means bad, but I found the trailer-formatted stories jarring, and struggled to get through a couple of the lingers ones, like ‘the man in the dusty hat‘.

I just finished a China Miéville short story about a secretive group of therapists that also act as assassins, clinically murdering individuals that get in the way of their patients‘ healing process.

It is possibly the closest I‘ve ever seen him get to outright comedy. Just wanted to share.

With "Three Moments of an Explosion," Miéville goes from being the author of a handful of books I frequently admired & occasionally adored (Kraken & City & The City), to one of my favorite living writers. Lumped with Jeff Vandermeer & Neil Gaiman under the nebulous, yet sometimes helpful, genre label Speculative Fiction, Miéville is my favorite of the three. Willing to venture into darker terrain (thematically & in terms of content) more ?

vivastory often than Gaiman & less cerebral & ambiguous than Vandermeer. This is not to knock either Vandermeer or Gaiman. I count American Gods & City of Saints & Madmen among my favorite books. I find that all 3 authors to be exploring the same world & personally am most pleased by the route laid out by Miéville. The works in this collection are experiences, in the sense that you never know where the next one will take you. Moving from the eerie poetry 👇 5y
vivastory of "Polynia" & "The Design" to the deeply unsettling "Säcken" & "The Bastard Prompt" to several movie trailers for movies you'll wish are real. I checked this out from the library, but will definitely be buying a copy for my collection. I will definitely be returning to these masterpieces. 5y
saresmoore Killer review! My brain has to be on point for Miéville, but I love what he does. I‘m definitely looking forward to this one! 5y

vivastory @TobeyTheScavengerMonk I'm going book shopping next weekend & Perdido St has high priority! I had to take a break from the book for the rest of the day after reading it. I honestly don't remember the last time I was that thoroughly unnerved by a story. 5y

Trust China to take caterpillar metamorphosis and turn it into unleaded nightmare fuel.

Aimeesue The REALLY freaky thing is that in experiments caterpillars that were exposed to unpleasant smell while they were munching on particular leaves will react to the same scent by moving away from it AFTER they go through the gooey metamorphosis and become moths!! How crazy is that? 😳 5y

Every single story in Looking for Jake, Miéville‘s first short story collection, was solid freaking weirdo gold (except, oddly, the title story).

I‘ll be working through his 2nd collection one story at a time between novels. The 1st story featured kids on chrono-Ecstasy exploring a building while it is exploding, & the explosion was a Burger King commercial, & the ghost of the building must be exorcised. It was 2 pages and was also fantastic.

I‘ve been on a short story reading kick lately. Within the past month I‘ve read Friday Black by Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah (heralded by the New York Times), Wilderness Tips by Margaret Atwood (one of my favourite short story collections I‘ve read by Atwood to date) and now I‘m on to Three Moments of An Explosion by China Miéville who reminds me of a more political Neil Gaiman.

vivastory I've read (& loved) Miéville's novels, I need to check out his stories 5y
Pruzy @vivastory Which of his novels have you read and enjoyed? 5y
vivastory City & The City, Last Days of New Paris, Kraken. They're all different & wild & each one has a lot of insightful religious/social/political criticism without being overly didactic. 5y

Pruzy @vivastory I‘ve read Kraken, Embassytown and Railsea. I highly recommend Embassytown. It‘s probably one of his best works. However, I might pick up a copy of the City & The City and Last Days of New Paris thanks to your recommendation! I also have a copy of This Census-Taker sitting on my shelf. 5y
vivastory Will definitely move Embassytown up my TBR. Last Days is a fairly quick read, but unforgettable. I plan on reading all of his books eventually. 5y

A brilliant, mind-bending collection that really showcases Miéville's talents for style, voice and narrative. Many of them are definitely Weird but but the startlingly vivid imagery is backed up by Miéville's unrivalled originality, an impressive and some brilliant writing. Be warned though, it's not for the faint of heart or the sensitive of stomach! Favourites were Säcken, New Death, Keep and the trailers.

Once again, I have fallen deep under the spell of China Mieville, tumbling into his bizarre imagination, seeing the world through an entirely different prism. His creativity amazes me; in this collection of short stories, it is even more evident just how broad his knowledge is. Each story is completely different, necessitating a reinvention of the laws governing these worlds. It is a masterwork.
