Eerily beautiful . . . [Chaon] is the modern day John Cheever.Boston Sunday Globe Powerful and disturbing . . . The shocks in this collection are many. The Washington Post These haunting, suspenseful stories by acclaimed author Dan Chaon feature scattered families, unfulfilled dreamers, anxious soulslost, fragile, searching characters who wander between ordinary life and a psychological shadowland. They have experienced intense love or loss, grief or loneliness, displacement or disconnectionand exist in a twilight realm, in a place by the window late at night when the streets are empty and the world appears to be quiet. But it is not, and neither are you. And since you cannot sleep, you stay awake. Chaon is able to create fully realized characters in mere pages. . . . This collection is further proof that Chaon is one of the best fiction writers working right now.Omaha World-Herald There are not many fiction writers who can do what Dan Chaon can do. . . . [He is] a literary force. The Philadelphia Inquirer Intense and suspenseful . . . a highly recommended work, not to be missed.Library Journal (starred review) Mesmerizing . . . gripping, masterful fiction. The Plain Dealer Superbly disquieting. The New York Times Book Review Dont miss the exclusive conversation between Dan Chaon and Emma Straub at the back of the book. Chaon's story collection “Stay Awake“ is a solid collection of midwest despair. Going against the dominant mode of a lot of contemporary short stories containing a minor revelation, Chaon is comfortable in ambiguity. I really liked every story in this collection (with the exception of “Thinking Of You In Your Time Of Sorrow“ which I really disliked). Favorites are “I Wake Up,“ “To Psychic Underworld“ “The Farm, The Gold, The Lily-White Hand (CONT)

vivastory & “Patrick Lane, Flabbergasted“.) I actually reread the final story in the volume, “The Farm, The Gold etc“ because of all of the interesting connections that it makes with some of the other stories in the collection & the ending of it just knocked my socks off, 3mo
Ruthiella I‘ve only read two of his novels but I loved them both. For two years now I‘ve been trying to get to this one but keep getting distracted 3mo
BarbaraBB @Ruthiella That‘s my least favorite too. This one sounds good though! 3mo

My struggle is real. I‘m on 2 antihistamines and can‘t stay awake. My reading is suffering so this isn‘t funny anymore!!!! Oh and Kindle thinks it‘s going to take me 8 hours to read this book because I KEEP FALLING ASLEEP!! Lol! My “time remaining” keeps increasing... sigh...

LDuffN This has happened to me several times. 7y

A solid collection with a few amazing stories. I was occasionally left wanting more, but still enjoyed this read.

Stay Awake: Stories | Chaon, Dan
Pickpick

Stay Awake is a collection of unusual tales, bordering on the horrific, expertly crafted by master storyteller Dan Chaon. A child's nightmarish screams reveal his father's secret past. A two-headed baby leads to the disillusion of their marriage. Stay Awake shows us the dark when our eyes are open.
