This was a fast-paced, entertaining read. I found it a bit predictable and repetitive at times and some of the dialogue was cringey, but overall I had fun with it.

Well, I‘ve finally completed one book for my #friendrecchallenge. Unfortunately, I can‘t say I enjoyed it much. I can feel my boyfriend‘s disappointment already and I haven‘t even told him yet. 😅 I wanted to like this, but I was honestly bored through most of it. The story seemed to ramble, and I never really felt invested in what was happening.

I breezed through this in just a few days and it had me on the edge of my seat for most of it. All the technical stuff about fishing and canoeing etc. lost me a bit though and the frequent POV shifts back and forth I found confusing even after becoming more familiar with the characters. There‘s one other thing, but I‘ll put it under a spoiler tag. It‘s a major spoiler, so if you haven‘t read this yet but want to ⬇️

shadowspeak17 I would not suggest peaking. 😂
This is a solid pick because I had a lot of fun reading it, but there were some things that bugged me.

The ending was kind of a letdown for me. Very early on in the book, I became convinced that Wynn would die before the end, so when it happened, it just confirmed my suspicion and didn‘t have much of an impact on me. That and the fact that Pierre is killed “offscreen” and what happens to Jack and Maia when they finally get to the village feels like an afterthought just made the ending kind of deflate for me.

I enjoyed the thought-provoking nature of these stories, and while all of the stories were solid and I liked most of them, it was hard not to compare this collection to Chiang‘s previous one which I enjoyed a lot more.

This was a bizarre read and it took me half the book to really get into it, but when I got to that point, I ended up liking it. I think this is one of those books that could benefit from a reread at some point now that I know what to expect from it.

I totally get why there are mixed reviews for this book. It is a challenge to read, requiring a lot of concentration. I had to really pace myself with it to avoid getting overwhelmed. But in spite of this, I really enjoyed it.

After reading We Have Always Lived in the Castle last year and loving it, I really wanted to love this book too. I did enjoy the haunting aspect of the story. I wasn‘t expecting to be scared by it, and I wasn‘t, but I did enjoy its creepiness. On the downside however, I spent most of the book feeling irritated because the characters and their interactions with each other really grated on my nerves. 😩

And to think I almost returned this to the library without reading it. 😱 I am so glad I went ahead and read it because this book was fantastic! I really enjoyed the relationship between Korede and Ayoola, as frustrating and twisted as it was, and I really like that while this book is fun and engaging on the surface, it‘s also got more substance to it and things to think about. I‘d highly recommend it. 😄👍🏽
