The first in a stunning new series introducing the Marlow Murder Club! 'I love Robert Thorogood's writing' Peter James From the creator of the BBC One hit TV series, Death in Paradise To solve an impossible murder, you need an impossible hero... Judith Potts is seventy-seven years old and blissfully happy. She lives on her own in a faded mansion just outside Marlow, there's no man in her life to tell her what to do or how much whisky to drink, and to keep herself busy she sets crosswords for The Times newspaper. One evening, while out swimming in the Thames, Judith witnesses a brutal murder. Unconvinced by the police's attempts to uncover who did it, she starts investigating, and soon hooks up with the salt-of-the-earth Suzie, a local dogwalker, and Becks, the Vicar's 'perfect Home Counties' wife. Together, they are the Marlow Murder Club. And when another body turns up, they begin to realise that they have a real-life serial killer on their hands. Because the puzzle they set out to solve has become a trap from which they might never escape... READERS LOVE ROBERT THOROGOOD 'Fabulous, compulsive reading' 5? Similar to The THursday Murder Club series, but not as good, since not so much emphasis on the main characters. More centered on the mystery, which was good.

I didn't have this series on my radar until book 3 came out a few days ago (Queen of Poisons) and so I had to get the first book.

Elderly lady alone in a large house knows her neighbour opposite was killed, but since the police are not taking it seriously she has to go investigate herself. She finds friends/comrades along the way, also because one murder soon turns into more.

Three women team up to solve some baffling murders that might be the work of a serial killer. The women are interesting and the red herrings plenty in this fun mystery. Full review at http://booknaround.blogspot.com/2023/10/review-marlow-murder-club-by-robert.html...

While swimming in the Thames, Judith Potts hears a shot from a neighbour's house. Although the police can't find anything wrong, Judith finds her neighbour's body the next day.

Fun, twisty cozy. This Murder Club has a better mystery but the other Murder Club's characters are better at engaging the reader's interest and affections.

There‘s a trend of mysteries featuring older people getting involved in cases and solving crimes. And I will probably end up reading all of them. This one was pretty interesting and I didn‘t guess how it ended, which is always a plus. I‘d read more of this series

Aims42 I‘m loving this trend as well 😂 Sign me up for all the senior shenanigans 🙋‍♀️ 8mo

So I‘d say for the first half of this, it felt like Flavia de Luce had grown up, changed her name to Judith Potts and dropped an obsession with chemistry in favour of an obsession with crosswords. But once the cast expanded, that feeling went away and then it just felt like I had read this too close on the heels of The Thursday Murder Club. It had a very similar vibe so if you‘re a fan of that series, this is one to pick up, too.

Septuagenarian crossword creator, Judith, thinks her neighbor has been murdered. She forms a friendship with Suzie, a dog walker, and Becks, the vicar‘s wife, while she tries to solve his murder.

I enjoyed this one and I‘m hoping I can find the second audiobook at my library soon. I think this is being compared to The Thursday Murder Club, but I didn‘t love it quite like I do that series. #Booked2023 #propernounintitle

Just finished this audiobook on the Libby app. The blurb for this book compared it to the Tuesday Murder Club so I had to read it. It‘s not as funny or clever and the characters aren‘t as well developed. I would say it‘s okay and give it a low pick.

My fluffy sidekick and I finished this read tonight. Reads like a cozy mystery but has a legitimate whodunnit plot that keeps you guessing. Includes a sassy trio that makes a statement solving the case..although clearly that would never fly. Not exceedingly fast paced, but not dull by any means!

Current read. Analysis thus far: it‘s a light read with the dark tones of murder, naturally. Underlying tones of wit and humor of Judith keep it fast paced.

I figured out the how the murders were carried out, I just didn't have all the details quite correct. Nicely wrapped up storyline with a fun odd-ball group of new friends and a stand-in police detective that confessed to needing help from the community they all shared in order to solve the mystery.

This started out a little slow, but by the end I was invested in the characters. 77 year old Judith hears her neighbor being murdered. But the police rule it a suicide, Judith decides to investigate.

I like an older sleuth. Judith is still active and smart. Her friends Susie and Becks are very different from each other, but soon they come together as a group. I like how each person contributed in their own way. This turned out to be a nice read.

brittanythebookdragon Have you read The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman?! It has older sleuths and is hilarious! Highly recommend if you haven‘t read it yet! 2y

Tamra @BookNAround I think it‘s partly due to listening to the audio in bits & pieces. I will say the narrator was amazing! Honestly, it was probably just me - not the right book at the right time. I hope you enjoy! 2y

Judith, a crossword setter is living a quiet life when she stumbles across her neighbour‘s body. Although the police believe it could be suicide, Judith is sure he was murdered and is determined to bring his killer to justice. I surprised myself by really enjoying this. An eccentric pensioner, a dog-Walker and the vicar‘s wife inadvertently team up to solve a murder or three in respectable Marlow.

The writing was slightly odd - I wonder if tv scripts are his first medium. There was a LOT of telling. And I‘m not sure the plot would stand up to too much scrutiny. But it was a lot of fun, with fab characters. And the narrator was EXCELLENT!

I have survived a full two-day marketing course on Zoom.

Exactly. Who knew that was possible?🤷🏻‍♀️

So I needed something a bit silly and on audio for this evening. If it wasn‘t for the name, I think this would be a quite enjoyable cosy, if a bit nonsensical. Unfortunately the name means it suffers from comparison, and that‘s never good.

The narration‘s good though (tho Libby doesn‘t give any clues who it is - sounds like Penelope Keith) 🙄

LeahBergen Your two days sound brutal! 2y
squirrelbrain Yeah, I deliberately haven‘t read this, as I thought it might be a not-so-good copy…. 2y
rockpools @LeahBergen The course was actually good. But I‘m a librarian surrounded by marketing-types. It was pretty much a self-defence tactic! And I do seem to have used the word Brutal an awful lot the last few weeks! 2y
rockpools @squirrelbrain I‘d been giving it a wide berth for that reason. But the only similarity is an eccentric older lady solving crimes - there‘s definitely room in the cosy-world for more of those. If it wasn‘t for the title, I don‘t think I‘d have made the comparison at all. As it is though, it doesn‘t have the warmth & charm of the other - but it‘s still better than most of the cosies I‘e tried to read in the past year. (I blame marketing people🙄) 2y
Magpiegem @squirrelbrain it‘s pretty different (it‘s not as good, but it‘s not bad) and the descriptions of Marlow are pretty accurate which always makes me happy 2y

Really enjoyable new read and I‘m looking forward to reading more about Judith and her friends. I like when they‘ve got seniors for a main character, especially when they‘re active and happy and not sad. I also like that she has friends who are younger, but she‘s the one with more zip. The mystery was definitely leading you towards the solution, but it was still fun.

I enjoyed this crime novel, with likeable characters trying to solve the who done it! Judith lives in Marlow and likes to go swimming in the river righr by her house. She witness a murder, the local police don't believe her, so along with two other women she meets on the case, they go about trying to solve it. Then more bodies turn up, could there be a serial killer on the loose.
