When We Were Vikings
When We Were Vikings | Andrew David MacDonald
A heart-swelling debut for fans of The Silver Linings Playbook and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. Sometimes life isnt as simple as heroes and villains. For Zelda, a twenty-one-year-old Viking enthusiast who lives with her older brother, Gert, life is best lived with some basic rules: 1. A smile means thank you for doing something small that I liked. 2. Fist bumps and dabs = respect. 3. Strange people are not appreciated in her home. 4. Tomatoes must go in the middle of the sandwich and not get the bread wet. 5. Sometimes the most important things dont fit on lists. But when Zelda finds out that Gert has resorted to some questionableand dangerousmethods to make enough money to keep them afloat, Zelda decides to launch her own quest. Her mission: to be legendary. It isnt long before Zelda finds herself in a battle that tests the reach of her heroism, her love for her brother, and the depth of her Viking strength. When We Were Vikings is an uplifting debut about an unlikely heroine whose journey will leave you wanting to embark on a quest of your own, because after all... We are all legends of our own making.

This one had been on my radar for a while. It made me laugh, and made me so anxious for Zelda (check CWs if you need). I loved all the parts of Zelda‘s life: the community center and the library, and the array of characters in her life. Using Vikings as a touchstone throughout the story was interesting and gave continuity. A book with so much heart, though tough to read at times - enter the story with the courage of a Viking 🗡 #NYWD

Great book to end 2021 with! Zelda has a deep love for all things Viking, an older brother who does anything necessary to keep her safe, and a quest to be able to become a hero able to help him. You know you are invested when you have to put the book down because you are so worried about what is going to happen next.

Zelda is twenty-one-year-old who is obsessed with Vikings. She lives with her older brother, Gert. Their parents are dead and Zelda has diminished mental capacity due to fetal alcohol syndrome. Gert will do ANYTHING to protect and support her. This book is full of memorable, unforgettable characters. It‘s both heart-wrenching and humorous. I love Zelda who definitely has a Viking spirit.

This ended up being quite the beautiful coming of age tale. Zelda: Lover of all things Viking is a twenty one year old girl on the Fetal Alcohol Spectrum is our protagonist finding her way in the world with the help of her brother and her friends. She encounters some terrible villains but it is quite the journey she goes on. Some strong emotions along with some very heart warming moments.

Coleen Ooh, love that cross-stitch design! Where did you get it? 2y
Traci1 @Coleen it's from Heaven and Earth designs. Aimee Stewart's Treasure Hunt Bookshelf. This is only about 12% of the pattern. Still have nearly 250k stitches left to do. 😬 2y
Traci1 @Squidget thank you 😊 2y
Coleen It is beautiful. Thank you! 2y
vlwelser I've been looking for cross stitch patterns. I may have to try to hunt this down. I assume it isn't a kit. 2y
Traci1 @vlwelser they do have material packs (kits) occasionally, but not all the time. I just bought the pdf of the pattern and kitted it up myself. 2y
vlwelser Thank you. This is exactly what I've been looking for. Basically something pretty advanced that will take a while. 2y
Traci1 @vlwelser I would highly recommend the app Pattern Keeper if you have an android device (they don't have it for ios yet). If you get large full-coverage patterns like this one, it is a life-saver. You can highlight one symbol and it highlights all that color. Then you can mark off which ones you've stitched. I'd never be able to do one of these with a paper pattern. The app runs about $8 - there's a free trial - it's the best $8 I've ever spent. 2y
Traci1 @vlwelser Heaven and Earth has lots of nice long term projects. Artecy is another one that has lots of nice full coverage pieces. I've gotten patterns from both and always been pleased. 2y
vlwelser That's amazing advice. Thank you. I will definitely check out Artecy before I buy anything. That app sounds awesome. I was struggling with this. Thank goodness for Litsy. 2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick This is beautiful! No rush, but I'm eager to see the end result. Will it be a tapestry? I don't know much about stitching and it's uses beyond little circular wall frames. 2y

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I have to admit, even though the plot was a common one with a few adjustments I rather liked it. It was written very well and even though this book is written from Zelda‘s perspective, it seems almost like her brother wrote the book as a whole as an homage to her. I would #recommend this book. #litsy #vikings

I loved this book. Zelda is a fantastic character. She‘s on the fetal alcohol syndrome chart and it has not slowed her down. She needs routine but learns to trust herself, she can‘t lie and when she is asked to lie she spills it anyway. And the big part of Zelda I love is her love of Vikings and how that love has made her strong. Great as an audiobook.

It‘s been compared to The Silver Linings Playbook, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime, & Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine. That‘ll give you a fair idea of the kind of feel-good story this is, told in first person by a disadvantaged person overcoming great odds. Zelda didn‘t quite seem believable as a person with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, but it‘s still a pretty good story. Full review link in comments. #CanadianAuthor #shadowgiller

Point of view of Zelda, a young adult who has fetal alcohol syndrome. She's had a rough life but she makes the best of her situation. Zelda considers herself to be a Viking and has others in her tribe who support her, especially her brother Gert, who is well-intentioned, but doesn't always make the best decisions. This is a quirky book with some heavy topics that are presented through Zelda's perspective. Similar to "The Reckless Oath We Made".

A gut wrencher, for sure. Zelda is born on the fetal alcohol spectrum and after her mother passes away from cancer, her older brother Gert tries to make a life for them both. He's not real great at making good choices but he does his best. A roller coaster ride of self discovery and trying to be independent, and a Viking warrior, when life tries to prove you wrong. Not for the easily triggered, either. This was tough. #nutsinmay

Despite dealing with some dark themes (TWs violence, abuse, and rape), this is a surprisingly charming and endearing novel from debut author Andrew David MacDonald. He tells this story tenderly, without making Zelda, the protagonist, a spectacle or an object of pity. This was a BOTM pick for me and I went in cold. While the main story and Zelda‘s narration made the book captivating, the very long dive into Zelda and her boyfriend Marxie planning to have sex really threw the story off for me. Nothing wrong with sex talk in books, but it goes on for SEVERAL chapters and the main story takes a backseat. Having a narrator with fetal alcohol syndrome was a good choice though and Zelda is a character.

I‘m not sure what to make of this. Zelda is a young woman on the Fetal Alcohol Spectrum who is obsessed with Vikings. She is trying to write her own legend with a group of supporters including her troubled, drug-dealing brother.

The story pinballed between realistic and unrealistic plot points. That‘s what I found most frustrating. I just couldn‘t get into it. The Reckless Oath We Made is similar but better. 3⭐️
