The Mad Wife
The Mad Wife: A Novel | Meagan Church
From bestselling author Meagan Church comes a haunting exploration of identity, motherhood, and the suffocating grip of societal expectations that will leave you questioning the lives we buildand the lies we live. They called it hysteria. She called it survival. Lulu Mayfield has spent the last five years molding herself into the perfect 1950s housewife. Despite the tragic memories that haunt her and the weight of exhausting expectations, she keeps her husband happy, her household running, and her gelatin salads the talk of the neighborhood. But after she gives birth to her second child, Lulu's carefully crafted life begins to unravel. When a new neighbor, Bitsy, moves in, Lulu suspects that something darker lurks behind the woman's constant smile. As her fixation on Bitsy deepens, Lulu is drawn into a web of unsettling truths that threaten to expose the cracks in her own life. The more she uncovers about Bitsy, the more she questions everything she thought she knewand soon, others begin questioning her sanity. But is Lulu truly losing her mind? Or is she on the verge of discovering a reality too terrifying to accept? In the vein of The Bell Jar and The Hours, The Mad Wife weaves domestic drama with psychological suspense, so poignant and immersive, you won't want to put it down.

Doing a #weirdwords thing and a book review all in one! Beautifully written book based on TOO MANY instances of women having very normal FEELINGS of sadness, being overwhelmed, under-appreciated, you name it. You‘re not sad, you‘re hysterical! Let‘s do a little ECT or maybe a lobotomy and see if that helps! Let‘s not forget how many women were misdiagnosed (unnecessary suffering)! The epilogue is 🔥 #weirdwordwednesday

I didn‘t expect to listen to this in one day, but I was totally hooked! Taking place over 1955, the book opens just before the Mayfields host their annual New Year‘s party. Lulu spends most of her time imagining how she would decorate the empty house across the street rather than stick to the Good Housekeeping schedule like the rest of the neighborhood wives. Lulu‘s obsession with the house across the street increases when a few family moves in.

This author is an automatic go to for me. I read her first two books and grabbed this one as soon as I could. It is her best yet. Though the other two were so good too.
Living in this timeframe had to be so hard for women. The 1950s. It's before I was even born so I wonder how the women in my family dealt. The best they could I suppose.

A solid 5 stars

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

The eerie cover of this book sets the stage for the haunting pages within - are the eyes blacked out to symbolize the loss of identity when conforming to the ideal suburban woman role? Or not feeling seen, heard, or understood? Not knowing if she is seeing reality? Feeling trapped and suffocated? One thing is for sure: Lulu‘s carefully crafted 1950‘s housewife facade is jiggling as much as one of her perfect jello salads. ⬇️

ICantImReading The result is a poignant and thought-provoking work of psychological suspense with a twist I never expected.

As a side note - I will also remember that Lulu taught me the term “dormiveglia”, describing the liminal space between sleep and waking.

mcctrish I feel like this would be the title of a book about me and all of the definitions of mad would apply, sometimes within the shortest time frame imaginable 4w

My second book by Meagan Church and I love how she is not afraid to tackle the difficult and infuriating topics in history, especially those pertaining to girls/women. A challenging and well-written piece of historical fiction.

This book made me sad and angry but it was so well written. I hope we aren‘t headed back to this lifestyle where women have no autonomy. Yikes.

Lulu is a house wife living for everyone else. She wants to be the perfect wife, and has stayed in character until new neighbors move across the street from her. They seem like they‘re hiding something, and she‘s determined to find out what it is. I really liked most of the characters, although the story felt a little flat for me towards the end. I wanted to know more about lulu‘s relationships with brother and mother. Still enjoyed it. Fast read.

What a captivating and heartbreaking story of a 1950‘s housewife where so many things were misdiagnosed. And a twist I didn‘t see coming. I enjoyed this one.💚

I chose the tagged book for my October Aardvark selection, as I *really* wanted to choose a back catalog selection-Sangoyomi's “Masquerade“ (praised as one of the best recent historical fiction). I read around 75 pages of Churche;s novel before I bailed. Prior to each chapter, Church uses an epitaph from Plath's “Bell Jar.“ (CONT)

vivastory A portrait of suburban ennui/dissatisfaction-this didn't have anything new to offer in the exceptional line of fiction of female rage from Plath to Highsmith to Laurence to Ingalls to Moshfhegh Yoder & beyond. Other than disgusting Jello salads. A rare miss for Aardvark. 2mo
Sace Oh. Maybe I‘m glad it was already sold out by the time I checked out the selections. 2mo
CBee Omg this looks very similar to tomato aspic, which my mom loved. Basically weird gross tomato jello with shit in it. No idea who came up with that idea 😦 2mo

KT1432 Oh nooo this is a highly anticipated read for me and I definitely got it. 😭 On another note, those aspic “salads” have always been wild to me. I still cannot fathom so many people thinking “yes, this would be good to eat.” 😂😂 Especially during a time period that is now used as some golden age of wonderful home cooking lol. Also, are in the Aardvark Facebook group?? 2mo
vivastory @KT1432 Maybe this one will work better for you. I completely agree with you on how bizarre the salads were, maybe it was . I'm not on Facebook but I bet it's a fun group 2mo

It‘s the 1950s, and we meet the happy, perfect wives who know how to entertain and take care of their family.

Everything isn‘t as perfect as it seems, though.

THE MAD WIFE is an unsettling read, but also an enlightening one with marvelous research done.

This book will be another favorite for fans of Meagan Church. 5/5

The kind of tale that absorbs you and infuriates you all at once. The writing placed you there, firmly settled in her psyche, seeing things as she sees it and feelings as she feels it. All of it. And such a satisfying ending.
