Big Little Lies
Big Little Lies | Liane Moriarty
Check out the #1 New York Times bestseller Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty, called “a surefire hit” by Entertainment Weekly. "The secrets burrowed in this seemingly placid small town...are so suburban noir they would make David Lynch clap with glee...[Moriarty] is a fantastically nimble writer, so sure-footed that the book leaps between dark and light seamlessly; even the big reveal in the final pages feels earned and genuinely shocking.” —Entertainment Weekly"Reading one [of Liane Moriarty's novels] is a bit like drinking a pink cosmo laced with arsenic... [BIG LITTLE LIES] is a fun, engaging and sometimes disturbing read” –USA TodaySometimes it’s the little lies that turn out to be the most lethal. . . .A murder… . . . a tragic accident… . . . or just parents behaving badly?  What’s indisputable is that someone is dead.  But who did what? Big Little Lies follows three women, each at a crossroads:Madeline is a force to be reckoned with. She’s funny and biting, passionate, she remembers everything and forgives no one. Her ex-husband and his yogi new wife have moved into her beloved beachside community, and their daughter is in the same kindergarten class as Madeline’s youngest (how is this possible?). And to top it all off, Madeline’s teenage daughter seems to be choosing Madeline’s ex-husband over her. (How. Is. This. Possible?).Celeste is the kind of beautiful woman who makes the world stop and stare. While she may seem a bit flustered at times, who wouldn’t be, with those rambunctious twin boys? Now that the boys are starting school, Celeste and her husband look set to become the king and queen of the school parent body. But royalty often comes at a price, and Celeste is grappling with how much more she is willing to pay.New to town, single mom Jane is so young that another mother mistakes her for the nanny. Jane is sad beyond her years and harbors secret doubts about her son. But why? While Madeline and Celeste soon take Jane under their wing, none of them realizes how the arrival of Jane and her inscrutable little boy will affect them all. Big Little Lies is a brilliant take on ex-husbands and second wives, mothers and daughters, schoolyard scandal, and the dangerous little lies we tell ourselves just to survive.

Velvetfur I've watched one episode so far, it seems OK but the portrayals of the characters are different from in my head when I read it, haha! I'm curious to continue watching though 😊 I loved the book, I'm curious to hear more of your thoughts on it! 3d
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Yes, I‘m watching it too!! 3d
SarahSaysRead I really liked this book! The show isn't quite as good, but I'm interested to see how season 2 goes. 3d

Liatrek I loved the book. The show made a few changes that I wasn‘t crazy about but its still a pretty good adaption with an amazing cast. I‘m very curious to see what they do with no more source material in season two. 3d
OriginalCyn620 I loved the book and thought the first season was really good. I‘m not watching season two though. 2d
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego I loved this book & the show is great! 2d
PaperbackPirate @Velvetfur I‘m the opposite - I‘ve seen the show and just started the book! It was funny when I realized it takes place in Australia not California. 2d
PaperbackPirate @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks The show is so good I knew I had to read the book. Usually it‘s the other way around for me! 2d
PaperbackPirate @SarahSaysRead I loved season 1 of the show so that‘s a great endorsement! 2d
PaperbackPirate @Liatrek Yes I‘ve heard that season 1 was the complete book & was surprised when I saw an ad for season 2. So far I‘m liking it. 2d
PaperbackPirate @OriginalCyn620 What made you decide not to continue? 2d
PaperbackPirate @StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego I don‘t know how season 2 will top season 1! 2d
OriginalCyn620 @PaperbackPirate It‘s just a personal thing. I want to see what they do with the book‘s material, but beyond that, I don‘t care. And that‘s for all books they‘ve turned into series. I haven‘t watched the additional seasons of 13 Reasons Why or The Handmaid‘s Tale either. 2d

Big Little Lies is back with Season 2!!

Just a few months ago, I sung praises for the novel and had also adored the TV adaptation in Season 1.

Who else has started watching Season 2? Any thoughts on the premiere?

Love Meryl Streep as an addition. I‘m very curious where they are headed.

Lovesbooks87 I fell asleep watching it last nite. I have to finish watching it. I am very curious to see where it goes this season as well! 1w

Wow. This book was a bit of a whirlwind for me. It took me a while to get into it—petty parent drama, ugh—but it was so engaging. I just got sucked into it, and I couldn‘t put it down until I‘d read the whole story. The balance of petty drama and serious problems was amazing, and I loved the double mystery of an unknown killer AND victim. I was really impressed with this book!

This photo is of my co-worker/friend. When I told her this show was a book she said she has to get it and read it. We call two different stores, but I found it on the Walmart app. My hours are earlier than hers so she texted me when she got home. It was too good of a picture not to share here. She is a Litsy natural I am still trying to talk her into getting the app. Also, comment if you can find the cat 🐱.

#WomenReadWomen2019 Read Along Chat Final Question! Excited to read everyone‘s thoughts! Please feel free to chime in if you‘ve read the book.

Velvetfur Hmmm. I think it was a very good portrayal with Celeste fighting back and not just 'taking it' which I think is why she refused to see herself as a victim. Also it very cleverly showed how loving Perry could be as well, thus showing how complicated this kind of situation can be, as abusers are often thought of as ugly horrible monsters. 3w
GatheringBooks @Velvetfur the tv series adaptation was filled with tension; it was taut, gripping, and intense - particularly the scenes bet perry/celeste. more than the face of the monster who is an expert at gaslighting, what i appreciated was how the image of the poor, battered, helpless “victim” is challenged here - showing that as women, we are all equally vulnerable, regardless of beauty, status, background, or perceived accomplishments in life. 3w
DivineDiana I read the book some time ago, but I do remember the volatility of their relationship was very upsetting. Later watched the TV series. I thought the acting was superb. Their interactions with each other were even more disturbing. I agree @GatheringBooks that Celeste was a different portrayal of the battered woman. A powerful performance by Nicole. (edited) 3w
See All 7 Comments
Laughterhp Their relationship is very intense. It was very frustrating that Celeste didn‘t see herself as the victim because she would fight back. But as the abuse increased I was definitely scared for her! 3w
GatheringBooks @DivineDiana i could not imagine celeste being portrayed now by anyone else other than nicole kidman. :) 3w
GatheringBooks @Laughterhp moriarty is cunning in that she allowed us to witness the progression of the abuse, from seemingly inconsequential hurtful words to brutal physical violence; the emotional gaslighting was even worse, i thought. 3w
Velvetfur @GatheringBooks It sounds like this situation is handled quite differently in the TV show - in the book I didn't get that much sense of 'tension' so when the violence happened it was a surprise to me. Yes you're right about how all women can be vulnerable, but I do see vulnerability in some men too.... Humans can be so horrible to each other, it's so sad 🙁 3w

#WomenReadWomen2019 Read Along Chat Question 2 of 3 is here. Is the book better?

MoonWitch94 I wasn‘t a huge fan of the novel simply because of the “mummy drama” nonsense. These mothers are absurd. I‘m not a mother, but it just sounded unrealistic that real moms would behave this way. As an educator, I have never come across anything like these women & I worked in a well to do school district. So I haven‘t seen the show yet, but I heard it‘s good. 3w
GatheringBooks @MoonWitch94 I live in Singapore where “helicopter moms” or “kiasu parenting” (roughly translated as keeping up with the joneses or racing to not be left behind) is fairly common. while the novel & the tv show may have exaggerated it to a comically tragic level, i do see signs of it actually happening with the rabid volunteerism and the competitive nature and the strained parent-teacher relationship. the tv series was fantastic! def worth watching 3w
MoonWitch94 @GatheringBooks Good to know! I will have to check it out. 3w
See All 16 Comments
Velvetfur I haven't seen the TV show yet! I like to read books before TV shows so I'm planning to get started soon on the show. I am curious to see how it's changed, since the book is set in Australia and the TV show seems to be all American actresses so I assume its set in America! 3w
CarolynM Just crashing in to say that I enjoyed the the TV version but I thought it lost a lot of the humour of the book🙂 Also, I agree there was some exaggeration but I recognised a lot of those characters from my days as a mother in the school yard. 3w
GatheringBooks @Velvetfur i watched the tv series a few years back before i finally read the novel this year and was riveted by it. i know what you mean about the loss of the setting, i like how aussie everything was, particularly the fascination with coffee, and the mistaken assumption of toby being gay. i found that hilarious. 🧚🏼‍♀️ the tv series is exceedingly well done. one of the best out there, i feel. 3w
GatheringBooks @CarolynM thanks for crashing in! the humour in the tv series is light in comparison to the tongue-in-cheek narration of madeline which i found to be so funny - like an adult version of clueless. it is deceptively light yet tackles so many important themes with a sleight-of-hand. 3w
DivineDiana @GatheringBooks Until I read your comments, I had completely forgotten about the humor in the book. It was Madeline‘s over the top character that pulled me in to the story. The TV series was so dark, that it completely obliterated those parts. 3w
laurenslibrary Tbh, I actually hate the TV adaptation. 🤐 And I really hate that they made a second season. Just bc Meryl Streep is in it doesn't mean its going to be good no matter what HBO tries to say. 3w
Laughterhp I haven‘t watched the tv show yet!! I don‘t watch a lot of new tv, so I‘ll get to it eventually! 3w
GatheringBooks @laurenslibrary ooh! very interesting. 🧚🏼‍♀️ what was it about the show that you did not particularly like? i didn‘t realize initially that the setting was in australia (have not read the book when i watched the series), but now i feel that it is such a missed opportunity because the setting was deeply a part of the entire narrative. 3w
GatheringBooks @Laughterhp i didn‘t expect to love the book as much as i did, but the series definitely kept my husband and myself in tenterhooks. 3w
GatheringBooks @DivineDiana right? she was just soooo hilarious. i loved her voice and how flippant she was, but also so earnest. 3w
BooknerdsLife Very interesting questions! I‘ve only read the book few years ago but haven‘t watched the TV series yet so can‘t answer any of them🤗 3w
Velvetfur @GatheringBooks Thanks for the good review! I'm glad to hear it's good like the book, I'm going to try to get started on it this weekend 😊 3w
enidkeaner I actually liked the changes made. This is one of the few times I like the adaptation better than the book. I really disliked the book and watched the show only b/c I love Nicole. But I loved the show 2w

#WomenReadWomen2019 Read Along Chat for tagged book is here! I only prepared three questions for discussion. Here is Q1. Anyone who has read the book is free to chime in. I am tagging those who have expressed initial interest to join the #WomenReadWomen2019 Chat.

MoonWitch94 Celeste. I really enjoyed the layers to her & I think she was the best written character. 3w
GatheringBooks @MoonWitch94 I was fascinated with her too - the fragility and the inner strength, the beauty and brilliance layered with vulnerability - Nicole Kidman is perfect for her, I thought. 3w
Velvetfur I liked Madeline the best, I was drawn to her strength and her fierce loyalty to her friends. She's very protective of those she cares about and takes a stand for what's right and isn't afraid of consequences. 3w
See All 9 Comments
GatheringBooks @Velvetfur we have the same favourite! i like how she is unapologetically shallow but also with such surprising depth to her characte.r. you are right about her being one fierce mother. her relationship with abigail, while contentious, is very interesting to follow. but the one she had with her youngest daughter is my fave. the fact that she has taken jane under her wing was especially telling given similar experiences when she was a single mum. (edited) 3w
Emilymdxn I loved all of them really, it‘s rare for me to connect with like all the characters in a plot, but I really can‘t choose between them. It‘s like they all showed me different bits of myself and the women I know. I think I‘m most like Madeline probably 3w
GatheringBooks @Emilymdxn you‘ve hit on the exact reason why i found it hard to pick a fave as well. while renata was portrayed as annoying - even more so in the tv series - i felt for her deeply as well. and Bonnie, with her “wrong side of the neighbourhood” past and the way she reinvented herself - plus yay, yoga! 3w
Laughterhp When I was reading I really liked hearing Jane‘s story. Idk if it was because she was so much younger and he had been through so much. I really liked Madeline too and how friendly she was and how she stuck up for her friends. 3w
GatheringBooks @Laughterhp madeline is definitely one character that readers would either looove or hate. she is a fierce and loyal friend but can also be a dangerous enemy. I enjoyed the gradual build-up of Jane‘s story; sadly, I knew much of it because I have already seen the tv series before reading the book, but it‘s a testament to moriarty‘s writing that i was still riveted throughout. 3w
Velvetfur @GatheringBooks Ah yes, it was good how she was a bit frivolous but had a 'so what' attitude about it! And her taking Jane under her wing.... I see some similarities with myself there, as I look after people in that way and am very protective of my friends. Maybe that's why I liked her best 😊 3w

This book takes you inside the "perfect" lives of suburban wives and what really happens in their personal lives vs. what they display to the world. There's turmoil, but there's also a lot of love. I loved this book, I was engrossed by it, and finished it in 3 days. Reading about Moriarty's childhood made me connect to the material much more. Needless to say #teamnosleep for #biglittlelies

This was SO GOOD. As a woman that has been in an abusive relationship, this was spot-on. Even 20 years later, I can think of him in a good way - all the romantic or sweet things he would do. I love these books, light hearted but still a bit chilling and not only a murderer to try pick but also the victim! Amazing

BooknerdsLife Have you read What Alice Forgot? One of my favourites of her books :) 3mo
Madison91 @BooknerdsLife it was my first of hers I read! I immediately went on a hunt to find the rest of her books after it 😅 3mo

The book was fast paced and Moriarty does a fantastic job at keeping the reader hooked. Normally, when I read a book that jumps between characters' perspective as well as jumping back and forth in time it gets difficult to follow. But, Moriarty does it beautifuly. Great quick read full of suspense and drama.

I just finished watching season 1 of the mini-series, and overall I enjoyed it but really preferred the book. It was definitely interesting to see what they did to transplant the story to California, but I hated the changes to Madeline's story.

What did y'all think?

CarolynM I enjoyed the series, but I thought it lost the humour that was in the book. I agree about Madeleine. 3mo

Loved this as an audiobook! Sometimes when I listen to books I want to be able to follow the plot without listening very closely so I pick a book I've read before. I chose this one because I had seen the HBO miniseries and thus already knew the story. The reader was so good and the story so riveting that I paid very close attention and even spent 15 extra minutes in my car after I got home just to hear the end.

Highly recommend. The story centers around three women who have kids starting kindergarten. As the title suggests people lie. The story leads to a climax worth waiting for. The main characters are basically good, but flawed or damaged.

Last night in Sydney, so I thought I‘d splurge for just a teeny bit with some Greek: spanakopita, prawn saganaki with feta cheese sauce, and bougatsa (filo pastry with custard dusted with sugar icing and cinnamon) - paired with an Aussie book! #WomenReadWomen2019

Excellent read, with very well handled domestic violence theme as part of one of the women's lives. This book follows three women who are all mothers of kindergartners and who either are or become friends. You know from the beginning of the book that there is a death at the school trivia night - accidental or murder is unclear - and the book then goes back in time to show the lead up to the fatal night.
