Black Echo | Michael Connelly
For maverick LAPD homicide detective Harry Bosch, the body in the drainpipe at Mulholland Dam is more than another anonymous statistic. This one is personal...because the murdered man was a fellow Vietnam "tunnel rat" who had fought side by side with him in a hellish underground war. Now Bosch is about to relive the horror of Nam. From a dangerous maze of blind alleys to a daring criminal heist beneath the city, his survival instincts will once again be tested to their limit. Pitted against enemies inside his own department and forced to make the agonizing choice between justice and vengeance, Bosch goes on the hunt for a killer whose true face will shock him.

Overall this was a good read, but at times it was a bit of a chore to get through and not helped by the acronyms used regularly in the book. I did enjoy the resolution of the story. I do know this is a high quality series so perhaps this was just Michael trying to find his style with his first book. I will see how the series develops in the next couple.

Started reading The Black Echo as part of a Group Read I am doing on Librarything. We are aiming to read all the books in The Harry Bosch Universe in order.

Currently at 6 hrs 19 minutes in the #24B4Monday Readathon and at 377 Pages in the #SummersEndReadathon (target 4000 Pages). This is after reading more than half of After The Party by Lis Jewell this afternoon / evening.

EadieB @Andrew65 I'm still reading The Kill and finished the 1st part of Bosch. Also listened to Recursion by Blake Crouch on audio. I'm up to 11 hrs and 6 mins. and read 330 pages. Your speed seems to be increasing and my is still slow! lol 4mo
Andrew65 @EadieB 11 hrs + is a great time. Yes Read intensively this afternoon / evening. 4mo
EadieB @Andrew65 You should be able to make up more time tomorrow or Sunday. You're doing great though in your page count! 4mo
See All 7 Comments
Andrew65 @EadieB Hopefully. The page count often depends on the book and the words on it some take a lot of reading to finish a Page, others less so. Some of the books I had today were of the shorter kind, and the audiobook went through the pages quite quickly. 4mo
EadieB @Andrew65 Yes audio usually goes quicker for me too! 4mo
Clwojick You‘re crushing it! Way to go! 4mo
Andrew65 @Clwojick Starting to catch up after a slow start, only managed just under 3 3 hours in the first 18 hours, but read around 5 hours in the next 6. 4mo

This is the schedule for the Group Read of The Black Echo which I am leading on Librarything. We are looking to read all the books in the Harry Bosch Universe Reading a book every few months, most probably over a number of years 😂

All welcome to join us, either on Litsy or on Librarything. Once the group is set up I will post a link on Litsy.

The schedule of this one is quite even due to the structure of the book. Today‘s section is shorter.

Like other readers I chose to read this series after finding the show on Amazon Prime. The Black Echo was a great opener for the series. The key elements of his back story are intermingled with the case. It cements the reader‘s interest that guarantees they will pick up the next novel.

Half watched an episode of Bosch on Prime with my mom and dad. I was also reading Thick.

What I call my parents “murdering shows”, I‘ve never really been into, though. My mom has also read most of the Bosch books, which is not my thing either.

BUT, Bosch fans, what do you think of the book versus the series?

TrishB I‘ve only read the books, which I love! 8mo
Megabooks @TrishB I think my mom originally liked the books more, but the series grew on her. She and dad are on the new season, which I think is 5. 8mo
KathyWheeler I had a problem with the casting of Titus Welliver at first because he‘s small and compact, and I didn‘t view Bosch that way. I grew to love him as Bosch though, and I like that he narrates the audiobooks. 8mo

Megabooks @KathyWheeler Yes! I definitely find it odd in tv and movies if the actor does match what I have in my head and/or the author‘s description. It‘s cool that he‘s the audiobook narrator! 8mo

Read my first Harry Bosch book thanks to @ShookBelf and #FreakyFriday ! Very enjoyable! Connelly goes all out to immerse the reader in a sense of place. The plot charged along and there was just enough humor to keep the book from being overcome by the gritty and dreary story elements. All in all a solid pick and I‘m sure I‘ll revisit this series!

(Only problem was I can‘t help but picture Bosch as Titus Welliver thanks to the ubiquitous adverts)

ShookBelf I'd read most of the Bosch series before the adaptation came out and although Welliver isn't how I'd pictured Harry, he does a magnificent job. I'd definitely recommend watching the series. 2y

Ok, I thought I‘d take a photo of the book with a Mexican beer, because that‘s what Bosch drinks, only to discover I was all out. So here‘s a stock image. However, I also came up with a SoCal themed cocktail ... recipe in comments below 🍹👇

#freakyfridaychallenge

CSeydel “The Black Echo” : combine chili powder, cinnamon, cocoa powder, cumin, & oregano with a cup of sugar & two cups water. Bring to a boil, then let steep for a few hours to make a chili-flavored syrup. 👇 2y
CSeydel Mix a shot of syrup with a shot of vodka & 3 oz of coke. Voilá! It‘s like a ... vodka mole? Sorta? ? If you try it, let me know what you think! I thought it was ... not bad. (edited) 2y

monalyisha I know nothing about cooking or making drinks but the oregano is a surprise! (I love mole, btw. I *do* know about eating. 😉) 2y
CSeydel @monalyisha haha, it is true real mole doesn‘t have oregano in it! I just threw in my standard taco seasoning (which I usually call “faux-le” just because the cocoa powder makes it sorta mole-ish) and made a simple syrup from it. 2y

I have mixed feeling about the “sense of place” so far in this book. At first I really enjoyed reading a book set in my own stomping ground, Los Angeles, with all the detailed place references. Then it started to feel forced, the way everyone kept describing what freeways they were taking everywhere — it was unnatural and over the top.

But Connelly‘s back on my good side: big points for referencing Raymond Chandler‘s great story, “The Red Wind.”

Anyway I‘m starting with Michael Connolly and Harry Bosch and it‘s great so far! My favorite word on page 13 is “slice”. I love the sound of it. I know I keep posting about The Black Echo and thank y‘all for humoring me but just one more thing:

In the back of the kindle version which is a newer version from the paperback that I read, there is a letter from Michael Connelly about the Amazon series BOSCH. I‘ve wondered where this first installment fit into the series: first episode, or no? Connelly explains that it is in the third season and why.

Isn‘t that so easy? Right there it is.

YESSSS 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 this was awesome.

📖 Harry is a tough ex-military LAPD man with a soft spot for at-risk victims. He is hounded by his time in Vietnam; this new case brings up ghosts from that part of his life. I liked his awkwardly clumsy slow-build relationship with his new partner Eleanor. BUT I did not predict how everything would turn up in the end, WHOA!

🎧 The audio is fantastic with Dick Hill narrating - I SO highly recommend it.

Dick Hill narrates. I like the way he does the character voices and the way he makes phonecalls sound. Looks like he narrates the first six books.

I think $4.95 is still the member price for this audio, if you‘re interested. (not affiliated, link in comments👇🏻)

The Black Echo is the first book by Michael Connelly to feature Det. Harry Bosch. Published in 1992, the book may seem a bit dated in that no one has a cell phone and cops are still use typewriters. However, the plot has held up quite well and the fully developed characters, warts and all, are a refreshing pace from the supermen that seem to grace the pages of so many novels today. I will be reading more Bosch books and checking out the TV series.

Looking for some book recommendations for my husband. He is generally not much of a reader, but a big fan of Michael Connelly and his Harry Bosch series (detective, crime novels). I would like him to try Tana French's In The Woods, but I'm looking for other suggestions since I don't think our tastes overlap much. Please and thank you!

drokka What about Iain Rankin, Kathy Reichs, John Sanford, or Ann Cleeves? David Baldacci, and Oren Steinhauer if he's into political ones. 2y
Kristy_K I second Tana French. Has he read Connolley's Lincoln Lawyer series? I loved those. Nick Pirog is also a good crime author. Or Harlan Coben. 2y
heatherkaz @drokka @Kristy_K wow, thank you! These are great places to start! I've got a few of these on a running list now 😊😊 2y

The Black Echo: A Novel | Michael Connelly
Mehso-so

I wasn't overly impressed with this first book. The plot dragged in places and I'm never a big fan of romance in this context. Rating: 3/5.
