#GratefulReads: I‘m using two of my favorite playwrights for #favoriteauthor, #notsofavoriteauthor & #aplay prompts.

Oscar Wilde is one of my absolute faves. His wit is second to none, but he also has this dark side and genius when it comes to analyzing art. I could read him all day!

I love Shakespeare, but some of his work really hits home with me and some just glances off the mark — and I enjoy a variety of his work! Maybe I‘ll grow into it.

#GratefulReads Day 23 - #notsofavoriteauthor

I don't enjoy reading John Updike's novels, and I've not had good luck with Norman Mailer, either (although I haven't tried Executioner's Song).

But thinking about books I don't like brings me down a little, so here's one of several rainbows we saw during our travels around town one afternoon this week. It was a good afternoon.

@Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @OriginalCyn620

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks So pretty 🌈 2mo
Texreader Wow! A perfect 🌈 2mo
ImperfectCJ @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @Texreader It was even more impressive in person! I couldn't get the whole thing in the picture, but we could see the entire arc and a little hint of the reverse rainbow above. 2mo
Texreader You‘re so lucky! 2mo
OriginalCyn620 Beautiful photo! 😊🌈 2mo

Soul of the Fire | Terry Goodkind
post image

I have such a love/hate relationship with Terry Goodkind. I love his Sword of Truth series. It's honestly one of my favorite fantasy series, but I've read interviews of the author and he seems like such an asshole. 😧 Very arrogant and contemptuous. So while I love his books, Terry Goodkind is not one of my favorite authors!

#gratefulreads #notsofavoriteauthor @OriginalCyn620 @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks

vivastory Do you watch Daniel Greene's YouTube videos? He has an excellent one about why Goodkind is controversial 2mo
Branwen @vivastory Wow, really? No, I had no idea that was a thing! I'm going to look up his videos! 2mo
vivastory You're in for a treat with his back catolog. Greene is a big WoT & King fan. 2mo

GrilledCheeseSamurai @vivastory Yay! Another Daniel Greene fan. 👏 2mo
vivastory @GrilledCheeseSamurai He's one of the very few booktubers I still watch 2mo
OriginalCyn620 👍🏻📚 2mo
Branwen @vivastory OMG. So I just watched that particular video and I am even more shocked and appalled at Goodkind's behavior! I'm also glad that most people seem to hate him, because I thought it was just me. I can't believe how mean he was about Robert Jordan! What an awful human being! 😡 I wonder if I reread his series if I will feel differently about it due to what I now know! 🤔 2mo
vivastory His comments about Jordan were appalling. His level of arrogance is astonishing. I hope I didn't ruin his series for you, but when you posted about him I thought you might be interested. 2mo
DaveGreen7777 Curiosity got the better of me so I checked out the Daniel Greene video about Terry Goodkind. “If you noticed a similarity, then you probably aren‘t old enough to read my books.” YIKES! Yeah, that‘s more than a little douchey! 😒 And the insensitive remarks about Robert Jordan are absolutely reprehensible! 🤬 2mo
Branwen @vivastory Oh no worries! You didn't ruin anything! I'm glad that I now know what an absolute turd he is! I remember that when I first read the Sword of Truth series it was around the same time that I was reading the Wheel of Time series because I discovered them not too far apart. I remember thinking that were some striking similarities between the two! Imglad I wasn't the only one who thought that! 2mo
Branwen @vivastory I really do want to reread the Sword of Truth books again at some point, because I'm curious to how I will feel about them now that I know all the facts! 🤔 2mo
Branwen @vivastory PS-> I can't stop watching Daniel Greene videos now! 🤣😂 2mo
Branwen @DaveGreen7777 RIGHT?!?! I always knew he was a jerk, but I had NO IDEA what a loathsome human being he is. How DARE he treat another person like that, especially when that person is ROBERT FREAKING JORDAN!!!!! 😡😡😡 2mo
vivastory @Branwen @DaveGreen7777 I just now noticed he interviewed Sanderson. He must be on cloud 9 because he's a huge Brandon Sanderson fan😄 2mo
DaveGreen7777 @Branwen @vivastory @GrilledCheeseSamurai You‘ll all be happy to know that I am now a Daniel Greene subscriber! 😁 2mo
vivastory @DaveGreen7777 🎉👏🤘I don't agree with him 💯 of the time, but I honestly think he's producing the best fantasy related content on YouTube 2mo
Branwen @DaveGreen7777 ME TOO! 💕📚👍🎉 2mo
Branwen @vivastory I am watching that one now! 😀 2mo
vivastory @Branwen Same here, I think he's doing a good job so far. I'd be completely geeking out 😂 2mo
GrilledCheeseSamurai @vivastory @DaveGreen7777 @Branwen Daniel Greene is a joy to watch. Over the past year his channel has grown in leaps and bounds. He isn't into all the book tube gimmicks (which can sometimes be fun) and produces a lot of thoughtful fantasy commentary. Most of it I agree with & some if it I don't. I love that he's full time creator now so he updates a lot too. 👍 2mo
GrilledCheeseSamurai As for Goodkind...i actually liked the first 4-5 books. After that I lost interest. After finding out that he was a dirt bag human though I don't like supporting him anymore. 🤷🏼‍♂️ 2mo
vivastory @GrilledCheeseSamurai I love it when Greene has his rants, because like you said they are thoughtful & he's definitely not reactionary. But he's not afraid to call someone out on their BS when it's warranted, like his recent video about Dessen 2mo
GingerAntics I started his Sword of Truth series, but it seemed to get repetitive, then I started reading all these articles about how he actually stole the story from a different series. I ended up giving up after the third or fourth book because predictable. 2mo
Branwen @GingerAntics I'm honestly still reeling over how deplorable Goodkind is! 😧 2mo
GingerAntics I guess I‘ve never seen an interview with him. If he‘s that bad, I‘m glad I stopped giving him my money. 2mo

know, I know. I should dig her but her books are just way too much work. They only get good at the halfway point.

This is my face when my book club picks yet another “twisty domestic noir” like the tagged book. I‘ve bailed on this #notsofavoriteauthor twice and am not likely to try again. #gratefulreads

Lcsmcat My book club did this one too, and I agree. It was awful. 2mo

Rest of the Story | Sarah Dessen
post image

Sarah Dessen is definitely a #notsofavoriteauthor for cherry picking a two year old quote from a grad student at an obscure school and using her platform to turn a lot of people against this poor woman. Jodi Picoult and Jennifer Weiner were particularly egregious at heaping on the mean. I hope they realize someday that #kindnessisbest 😞

Given what Dessen did, this apology is very lame.

#gratefulreads #namastenovember

Skeebies05 I was so sad to see some of the people dog piling on. IE Roxane Gay :( and Jennifer Weiner equating it MeToo!! 🙄🙄 2mo
Eggs Yes yes yes just be kind - it‘s not that hard to do 🥰😍 2mo
Megabooks @Skeebies05 I feel like Roxane‘s apology was the best, and Ng and Picoult using hers because they couldn‘t write a better one?? You‘re writers! 🙄🙄🙄 the whole situation was an exercise is women acting in a way they said they wouldn‘t act. People can not like your books. It doesn‘t mean they have “internalized misogyny.” It May mean they just don‘t like your writing and that‘s okay. I don‘t like Dessen, et al‘s shitty attitude/behavior. 2mo
See All 35 Comments
Megabooks @Eggs Exactly. On social media I try to err on the side of kindness. I am not perfect, but I try not to be rude, catty, or mean. I just went through a major depression in 2017 and 18 so I realize how important that is. (And I‘m sorry for anything weird I said on Litsy those years. It was so bad that I have huge gaps in my memory.) 💙💙💙 2mo
Eggs @Megabooks I don‘t recall anything too weird; I just remember you were struggling. I‘ve been there too (with depression) and when younger my filters were sometimes nonexistent 😳🤯 🙄... Growing older and modern meds have changed me. I‘m happy for you that you‘re feeling better❤️❤️ 2mo
Megabooks @Eggs It was horrible to a factor of 10 worse than in my 20s when I first started seeing a psychiatrist. I‘m doing better with changed meds and weekly appointments, but it‘s so hard. I lost a job I loved because of it. I just didn‘t ever think it would be that bad for me which is conceited. The whole experience has given me more empathy and made me much more humble. 2mo
MicheleinPhilly That whole shitshow reminded me why I gave up Twitter in the first place. 🐑 2mo
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I missed it 🤷🏼‍♀️ What did Jodi do? 2mo
Megabooks @MicheleinPhilly I‘m rarely on it, but I keep an account to read things like this first hand. 2mo
MicheleinPhilly I still have an account and did go back to read it firsthand after I heard about it. The only reason I won‘t delete my account outright is because Ellen follows me. 😂 2mo
Megabooks @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Sarah Dessen found a two year old article that quoted a grad student saying she got involved in her (small, very small) college‘s first year reading programs selection board because she didn‘t want Dessen‘s novel chose. Sarah cut off here, but the student instead wanted to pick some nonfiction about racism in the criminal justice system. First, it was one reader‘s personal opinion, second Dessen cut out the part about 👇🏻 2mo
Megabooks @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks that did get picked. So then a lot of writers including Picoult, Weiner, Gay, Vivian, Han, Angie Thomas, Silvera, Ng, Sepyts, Jemisin etc. heaped abuse on this student personally and publicly. It was sad and disappointing. Some have apologized, some haven‘t. I thought Jodi said some of the worst things and made a terrible apology. Jemisin hasn‘t apologized though, and she was very mean. The girl they attacked is in hiding. 2mo
Megabooks @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks It‘s just a sad situation that so many authors would turn into Regina George from Mean Girls. 2mo
brittanythebookdragon I just read some of the articles and Dessen originally said something like we put our hearts and souls into our work. And like...exactly. You chose to do that and you chose to put it out there. Expect the criticism. Surely this isn‘t the first time someone hasn‘t liked her books. I‘m not sure why this group of grown women decided to gang up on this girl. 2mo
AnansiGirl Wow did you see Northern State U‘s apology to Dessen? People are lambasting them for throwing the student under the bus. 2mo
Eggs @Megabooks I understand the severity—it affected my job and relationships with others. I am sending hugs and zen thoughts to you 💗💗 2mo
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @Megabooks omg!!!! That‘s awful!!! 2mo
OriginalCyn620 Wow 😳 2mo
Megabooks @brittanythebookdragon Right? I mean I‘m sure there are negative reviews on some books on amazon, goodreads, etc. Why did she pick out this one girl in a tiny South Dakota paper?? And why was everyone else so eager to attack?? 2mo
Megabooks @AnansiGirl Yes, I thought they were horrible for not supporting their student!! 2mo
Megabooks @Eggs Thank you so much! It‘s sad how many people can relate. I felt like coming public after a blogger I follow on Instagram did. I really appreciate how supportive you are and your kind soul. 💕💕 2mo
Megabooks @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @OriginalCyn620 it was terrible seeing so many adult women act so immature and mean. Some were downright vicious. 2mo
MicheleinPhilly @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Clearly it means we‘re best friends. 😉 2mo
Megabooks @MicheleinPhilly Ellen is a national treasure! Never. Delete. Your. Account! 2mo
Eggs You‘re welcome. I try to treat others the way that I wish to be treated. My circumstances and missteps have humbled me...❤️❤️ 2mo
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @MicheleinPhilly clearly!! Besties for sure!! 2mo
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @Megabooks Sher is the sweetest 💗💗💗💗 2mo
CoverToCoverGirl How awful! 😢 2mo
Megabooks @CoverToCoverGirl I just found it so disappointing. So many authors, so much negativity. 2mo
CoverToCoverGirl I was completely oblivious until I saw your post, but what occurred is very, very disappointing and quite shocking! As authors they should understand the power of words. 2mo
Jee_HookedOnBookz Thank you for sharing this! I had no idea! This is so heartbreaking...These authors are supposed to be inspiring, walk the talk and practice what they preach. To see Picoult, See, and Gay's names here, authors whom I look up to, as some of the 'bullies', is so disheartening 😭 2mo
Jee_HookedOnBookz Sorry not 'See'. Gah thought I saw her name. This is what happens when one types half awake. I wanna say Angie Thomas. Not See. Also why did the Uni have to apologize? I don't see the reason! 2mo
Megabooks @Jee_HookedOnBookz Right! I‘m not a fan of Weiner‘s writing, but she went so far as to compare a student not liking Dessen‘s writing to Larry Nasser???? The whole thing was just awful. 2mo
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I just googled this!! I was totally unaware!! 2mo

Wolf Hall | Hilary Mantel
post image

#GratefulReads Day23. I‘m jumping in here in the middle of the month, but when I saw today‘s post #NotSoFavoriteAuthor Hilary Mantel came to mind instantly. It feels a bit like cheating when you‘ve not completed a single book of hers, but I‘ve tried to read Wolf Hall so many times and I can‘t get past her writing style of no punctuation. It‘s such a fascinating subject but the way she writes seems arrogant, as if the rules don‘t apply to her.

Bklover And I know it‘s an amazing book! 2mo
ljuliel I haven‘t read any of hers either ! 2mo
OriginalCyn620 Haven‘t read her either! 2mo

jb72 I can‘t stand when an author ignores punctuation. Sally Rooney does that. 2mo
RebL I wrote tips on reading this book, I found it so challenging. Also, all the characters who share a name have to be teased apart because they aren‘t well identified. 2mo
TrishB I can understand, but I love Wolf Hall! 2mo
TiredLibrarian The style does take some getting used to, but to me it was worth it. I liked Wolf Hall but *loved* Bring Up the Bodies, and can't wait for #3. 2mo
TiredLibrarian @RebL Great idea; can you share it? I'm hosting a discussion of Bring Up the Bodies in Feb. 2mo
RebL @TiredLibrarian Thanks for asking... http://reblnation.com/scaffolding-challenging-books/ I hope it helps. Though it was inspired by Wolf Hall, the suggestions apply more broadly to all challenging texts. 2mo
TiredLibrarian @RebL Thanks! 2mo
Settings I listened to the audiobooks so I had no idea she didn't use punctuation, haha. 2mo
Bklover @jb72 Yes- it drives me batty! 2mo
Bklover @RebL @TiredLibrarian @Settings Thanks so much for the tips! I never even gave a thought to using the audiobook to help guide me. When I was a kid there was a six week PBS special on the wives of HenryVIII that I watched with my mom. Have wanted to read it for a long time but just keep giving up! ❤️❤️❤️ 2mo
TheLudicReader Haha maybe she just doesn't know the rules. 2mo
Settings Speaking of tv, the miniseries is extremely good. Top notch actors. 2mo
RebL Being an Anglophile helps. I grew up as part of the frozen chosen (Episcopalian) and we studied on this hard. 2mo
