Whisper Man
Whisper Man | Alex North
"The Whisper Man is the most unsettling thriller I have read since Jo Nesbo's The Snowman. Much more than the sum of its parts, it is nightmarish and disturbing and, at the same time, a moving and life-affirming novel about fathers and sons, and grief, loss, and recovery."--Alex Michaelides, author of the #1 New York Times bestseller The Silent PatientIn this dark, suspenseful thriller, Alex North weaves a multi-generational tale of suspense, as a father and son are caught in the crosshairs of an investigation to catch a serial killer preying on a small town. After the sudden death of his wife, Tom Kennedy believes a fresh start will help him and his young son Jake heal. A new beginning, a new house, a new town. Featherbank. But the town has a dark past. Twenty years ago, a serial killer abducted and murdered five residents. Until Frank Carter was finally caught, he was nicknamed "The Whisper Man," for he would lure his victims out by whispering at their windows at night.Just as Tom and Jake settle into their new home, a young boy vanishes. His disappearance bears an unnerving resemblance to Frank Carter's crimes, reigniting old rumors that he preyed with an accomplice. Now, detectives Amanda Beck and Pete Willis must find the boy before it is too late, even if that means Pete has to revisit his great foe in prison: The Whisper Man.And then Jake begins acting strangely. He hears a whispering at his window...

This book scared me as it deals with child abduction-any parent‘s worst nightmare. A father and son find themselves in the midst of a police investigation of a serial killer. It‘s suspenseful, has a supernatural element, and the main characters are well drawn. I particularly like the father-son relationship which added so much depth to the story, otherwise it would be just another run-of-the-mill thriller. TW:child murders but not graphic. 👇

I know I have an unpopular opinion with this book. I was definitely in the middle with liking it. I thought it had a good storyline but it took awhile for anything to really get anywhere to explain anything. I also felt like the story got a bit muddled with too much going on. I liked it but it wasn‘t really my favorite.

This book had me from page one. I read it as part of a “group read”. There were times I stopped reading at a certain point, even though I didn‘t want to.
I like North‘s ability to make the end of every chapter a cliff hanger. Just when you think you‘re putting the book down for the night ...think again! I also like the short chapters, which made it easy to read on (and on)
I can see this book being made into a movie, and hope that it is someday.

Butterflyamore @CocoReads A lot of people gave Educated one star. 3,217 people on Goodreads, to be exact. 3w
CocoReads Wow. I rarely read GR reviews so I didn‘t even notice. To me they‘re a lot like Facebook comments. I don‘t need that negativity in my life. 🤣 3w
Butterflyamore @CocoReads I would not have much of a video here if I didn‘t take a look at those reviews. 😉 I don‘t mind seeing people‘s opposing views, if they express them coherently and respectfully, but some people are so unbelievably nasty. The reviews on Educated were the most upsetting to me but I anticipated that ahead of time. 3w
CocoReads That‘s a good point and I agree for the video, you definitely needed the reviews. And I also don‘t mind a well worded negative review with good coherent arguments but for sure the really nasty ones are what I don‘t like. 3w

Another book finished for #24B42020.🎉

This one had a very creepy storyline and I was holding out hope that I'd love it in the end, but sadly it was just okay. Too many flaws in the story and timelines that weren't properly addressed for me, but the whispering definitely made me glance twice around the house tonight after turning off the lights.

More “meh” than “yeah.” 4 stars on the creep factor but I found the story to be missing some oomph. There were several plot lines that just felt sort of tacked on by an editor to give it more complexity. 2.5⭐️

Between a Pick and So-So for me. There's nothing wrong with it per se, it just didn't fully grab my attention until I was about half way through. I normally love multiple POV, but for some reason it didn't work for me this time. I had a hard time keeping them straight. The story did come together in a satisfying way, so I'll go with Pick.

This book was so hyped up that it fell short for me. It wasn‘t very scary. However, the narrative did have me turning the pages and I read it in two sittings. But when I finished, I was kind of left with the feeling “that‘s all?”

I‘m a hardcore horror reader so I would say this is more in the thriller category than horror and I wanted more.

The Whisper Man was a very exciting read. Full of suspenseful chilling moments. Several surprising moments and reveals that kept me wanting to read. The character development was great and made them and the story feel very real. There‘s one event at the end I wish was a little different. Overall it was nearly a perfect ending and probably more realistic than how I would‘ve chosen.

Argh, this is the first time I‘ve ever had to bail on an audiobook because of the narrator!
I‘ve heard so many great things about this book so decided to use an audible credit for it. Christopher Eccleston narrates so I assumed, as he‘s an accomplished actor, he‘d be pretty good. Oh how I was wrong. Dull, monotonous, did nothing to draw me into the story.
So this goes back on the TBR to be read in another format. 🙁

jenniferw88 Eccleston is my least favourite Dr but this book is on my tbr - thanks for letting me know to avoid the audio! 2mo
FlowerFairy Oh no! I got this one on audio through audible. Partly due to hearing so many good things about it and partly because I, too, had assumed it would have a good narrator because of Eccleston. 😕 2mo
ChasingOm Do y‘all know that you can return books through Audible and get your credits back? I was a member for about a year before I learned that, so wanted to pass on the knowledge so you can get something you‘ll enjoy! @FlowerFairy @LoveToReadLiveToRead (edited) 2mo

First of all, I'm a wimp. But this is so so scary! The Whisper Man whispers to small children outside of their windows at night! I mean come on!! 😱
I truly had to pause reading this and listen to another #audiobook at night because it was seriously getting to me. The scary parts didn't last too long, and I still recommend this to fellow wimps like myself. Intersecting storylines emphasized the father-son relationship, and grief well.

vumblereads I‘m a major wimp myself but reading horror books are scarier than watching them (tv series / movies) in my opinion because when I read them and imagine them in my head, it‘s more personal and it feels more realistic lol 😅 #wimpsoflitsy 3mo
