The Sanatorium
The Sanatorium | Sarah Pearse
EVERYONE'S IN DANGER. ANYONE COULD BE NEXT. An imposing, isolated hotel, high up in the Swiss Alps, is the last place Elin Warner wants to be. But she's taken time off from her job as a detective, so when she receives an invitation out of the blue to celebrate her estranged brother's recent engagement, she has no choice but to accept. Arriving in the midst of a threatening storm, Elin immediately feels on edge. Though it's beautiful, something about the hotel, recently converted from an abandoned sanatorium, makes her nervous - as does her brother, Isaac. And when they wake the following morning to discover his fiance Laure has vanished without a trace, Elin's unease grows. With the storm cutting off access to and from the hotel, the longer Laure stays missing, the more the remaining guests start to panic. But no-one has realized yet that another woman has gone missing. And she's the only one who could have warned them just how much danger they're all in . . . 'A seriously sinister setting, an incredible sense of place and a twisty, unpredictable plot combine to make an utterly terrifying read. I loved it.' Allie Reynolds 'What an incredible debut novel. Clever, creepy and utterly compelling.' Samantha King 'The tension is knife edge-sharp.' Michelle Adams

I was seduced by the cover and blurb of The Sanatorium, despite some tepid reviews. Should have listened to the reviews, Rae Rae ??‍♀️

There's a fine line between enjoyable crap and eyeroll-inducing nonsense. Sadly, The Sanatorium, despite a promising premise, falls into the latter category.

The plot was so ridiculous that I got bored early on. Characters universally sucked. Everything over-explained.

I agree with @batsy : "ugh"

If you're starting to wonder if my life consists entirely of photos of coffee and cake... well... you're not far off 😅

This book isn't working for me.

I probably should have paid attention to all the reviews that said it was total guff, but that pesky blurb... and the cover... how could I resist?

So far it's not very good and none of the characters are behaving in recognisably human ways.

batsy I really wanted to like this because of the concept and the setting! But it was just so ... not good. 1mo
RaeLovesToRead @batsy I'm going to have to wrack my brains to explain WHY it isn't working, but it isn't! It's just not hooking me. I give zero craps 😦😥 1mo

Spoiler Alert!!! This book could have been so good. The idea behind it was excellent, and I was so excited to read it. Honestly, if left me a bit disappointed. The protagonist was a police detective tasked with solving numerous crimes on her own. She got it wrong again and again. The way the story ended, it appears that she never did get it right. The epilogue really leaves me wondering what even happened. This book just wasn‘t for me.

I was hoping for a really creepy murder mystery. And I guess it‘s kinda creepy, and there‘s plenty of murder, but for some reason I just couldn‘t get into this one. Maybe the melodrama didn‘t hit right for me 🤷🏼‍♀️ Or the ending, it was a little over the top and not very well planned.

Not my normal genre of choice but this eerie thriller set in the Swiss Alps at a half hidden sinister hotel ticked all the boxes for me. Plagued by history but now renovated into a five star hotel, it‘s history of abuse and maltreatment was bound to catch up with its present.
A range of great characters were explored and the writer kept me guessing til the end.
A claustrophobic and atmospheric backdrop which made for a brilliant setting.

Gizmo86 I really enjoyed this as well. Looking forward to the sequel ☺️ 9mo

This ended up being fairly middle of the road. It kept my interest for a while, but towards the end became slightly predictable and ultimately too unbelievable. Why show the audiobook when you can show the puppy??!! Lol
Also, not really anything good to say about this book. The narrator's trauma/memories situation seemed very superficial and fake, the "twist" at the end may as well have been "aliens landing and did it" b/c it was so unconnected which also means you have to suffer through the evil villain's step by step break down of how they did it. Also the epilogue? Is this going to be a series? Pass.

FantasyChick You have more discipline than me. I couldn't even make it to the half way mark on this one. Also...ALWAYS show puppy pictures!!!! 😍😍😍 10mo
Andrea4 @FantasyChick LOL honestly it probably did help that I was walking him most of the time so my attention was split; should have clued in to why it didn't seem like I was missing anything hahahha! At the twist, I almost literally threw my hands up and returned it right then and there! 10mo

A soft pick. It is a debut novel. I think I may be burnt out of the unreliable narrator being gaslighted by the killer and associates. Just wasn‘t super original and was easy to solve. There was definitely a sense of menace and was unsettling through out.

This is the second ‘isolated up a mountain‘ thriller I‘ve read this summer and I really enjoyed it. As always, it‘s difficult to review this kind of book without giving away plot points that spoil the reading experience. There are lots of different threads in this, particularly the detective‘s ‘origin story‘ which is both interesting and thematically relevant.

#2 This one has gotten mixed reviews but I enjoyed it. I think maybe people thought it was slow? But I liked the suspense. It's about an old abandoned Tuberculosis sanitorium that has been turned into a minimalist hotel. And it's in the Swiss Alps. A detective on leave goes with her boyfriend to meet her estranged brother and his fiance but then things start happening. It's a good thriller! Especially for winter!.

Probably should have bailed. But for reasons unknown to myself, I persisted. Maybe I hoped that the set-up, setting, & atmosphere would pay off. Snowed in, locked room-type concept in a stark minimalist hotel in the Swiss Alps? Good stuff, right? No. Nothing worse than contemporary thrillers where the formula is: hackneyed writing + unconvincing plotting + "big reveal" involving Serious Social Issue treated in the most asinine manner imaginable.

RaeLovesToRead Thanks for the heads up... from the set up sounds like all the things I'd love 😅 13mo
