This book was absolutely amazing! I was able to escape to another world and really connect with the characters. I definitely recommend.

This book completely fell flat for me. The plot was uninteresting and I did not care about the characters at all. I am surprised I even made it halfway through the book because it was so unimpressive. The main character was the cliche princess who did not want to be a princess and I am sick of this character trope being used.

We did not get along, this book and I. I didn‘t like the characters - a lot of time was wasted trying to figure out if the guy liked the girl and eating the mermaid version of sweets while mean girls said mean things. I got a little excited when the action started but it got too messy when I couldn‘t remember all the characters. Then the ending.

A world that is as stunning as that cover, omg 😍😍 Donnelly totally succeeded in creating a vivid and unique underwater society, rich with its own customs and practices, and yet at the same time also incredibly relatable to us today. I loved the plot and the writing style and the characters, and totally got swept up in the story. This book toes the line between MG and YA, but is a great and refreshing take on the mermaid plot for all.

Wasn‘t sure what I was getting into with this YA but I opened the cover and there were gorgeous maps of mer-societies in all the oceans and I‘m like yes, this is happening. Good decision on my part. This book gives an amazingly different background to the history of Atlantis and the creation of merfolk. I‘m happy I already have the sequel!

There are really corny moments in this book where you think why did you just say that!?! But then there‘s moments like this that make you reflect and be like damn, so true.

So I‘m really enjoying this book so far. I wasn‘t sure what to expect because I‘ve never bought a book from the Disney Hyperion publishing company but it‘s keeping me pretty entertained and on my toes (especially with all the aquatic biology references; someone did their research 🐠🐙🦀)

“The shad called to her. Thousands of musical voices, like rain on water, beckoned. It is said that the goggs thought fish made no sound. Serafina wondered if it was because they listened only with their ears. She knew that those who truly love the sea‘s creatures listened to them with their hearts.” - Serafina, Deep Blue

Good read! Its starts off a little slow while characters are being introduced, but I feel like you need that background to understand what is happening later on in the book. There are words from different languages being used all over and sometimes it can be hard to follow. Most of them can be understood in context, but some of them it is helpful to look up in the glossary. The language made it more immersive, but difficult to keep up with.

ReadingRover I went to a children‘s book fair today in upstate NY and got to meet this author. She was super nice! 2y

This one was not a favorite. I kept getting sucked out of the story by the distinctly human activities that were unnecessary underwater.

Although, I'm not quite finished with it yet. I absolutely love it, it's a quick read and I love fantasy but this is my first mermaid read and I'm loving it. It's a cross between fantasy/myth/legends and is all and all a good read. So far it's a page turner and keeps you on your toes with every plot twist.. of Pirates, assassins.. landlubbers.. dragons.. it's a must read!

Not a bad series. I felt like it had to many characters however. Instead of the chosen six, there should have been only three or four. Then it could have focus more on how the friendship developed for it seemed to just happen over night with some. Over all it wasn't bad but it's definitely for the younger audiences.

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. While it does hold to some of the normal YA tropes, I love that it focuses on female friendships and the importance of working as a group and supporting people. The world building is good, the characters are well done and it's well written. Im not a huge #mermaid fan, but I'm glad I read this book. 3/5 stars

#septphotochallenge for today are books #setbythesea and I've chosen Jennifer Donnelly's Waterfire Saga because they're set in the ocean. I first read Deep Blue last year off a teacher bookshelf at random while subbing and was quickly interested in the story. 🐠🐟🐡🐬🐳🐋🌊 #somethingforsept #somethingforseptember

pppooraikul I'd really like to know your view on this one. 😊 Should I move it up to the top of TBR pile? 3y
The_Literary_Jedi @pppooraikul - I would use this as an in-betweener book when you need to take a break. They're middle grade reading so you can get through them very quickly. Being the case, if read entirely they won't be satisfying 3y
