I didn‘t realize that this was a sort of companion book to Michelle McNamara‘s I‘LL BE GONE IN THE DARK, which I listened to almost five years ago- but luckily, I remembered that book & the Golden State Killer investigation well. Here Jensen covers his own friendship with the author & involvement as well as the details of his social media process that‘s helped solve crimes through a reliance on geo-targeting & crowdsourcing. A fascinating listen!

I absolutely love this book, his constant compassion after heart break is impressive. This book was the final push I needed to sit and write my best friends murder on February 5th. She was killed in Sidney Ohio, so if you are from there please reach out.

🤘🏻🤘🏻Jensen helped finish McNamara‘s I‘ll Be Gone in the Dark, there are many references throughout making it a solid “companion” to that read. Jensen details other cases worked, how suspects were found and many brought to justice using the smallest details and proper marketing.

It‘s fascinating. In the last chapter, he “deputizes” citizen detectives and tells them the methodology he has found so successful.

Bk22 of June, Bk15 of #JoysOfJune #readathon & Bk6 of #LittenListen is done! Another NF true crime/memoir, this is written & narrated by a reporter who worked with Michelle McNamara, before her death in 2016. After doing the crime beat for a Long Island newspaper, Jensen decides he wants to try & solve crimes, not just write about them. Teaming up with McNamara & on his own investigations he tries to bring answers to grieving families. 👇👇

If you‘re a true crime fan (chances are you‘ve read this already or have heard some of the stories), but if not, then go read this now. I really enjoyed reading about Jensen‘s background, his friendship with Michelle McNamara, and his process. Most of the crimes themselves I knew about from listening to his podcast, so for me that was a little redundant. Again, listening to his process in trying to solve these crimes was fascinating.

Billy Jensen is a crime reporter and was a friend of Michelle McNamara, who doggedly tried to solve the Golden State Killer rapes and murders but died before that man was caught. Jensen here tells about how he discovered a way of solving crimes via social media and discusses some of the cases he was involved with. A good reference for armchair detectives who are keen to help catch the bad guys. Four stars for this one.

Um, what? Serial killers and sociopaths are not the same thing, bro.

I would‘ve really liked an editor to point out that this paragraph doesn‘t make a lot of sense when one reads the research that experts have done re: serial killers and sociopaths and psychopaths.

Known for his work on helping to edit & complete McNamara's true crime masterpiece, I went into the tagged volume knowing very little about Jensen. The first half is solid, & to his credit, Jensen's presentation of various cases is reminiscent of Douglas' "Killer Across the Table". Although I didn't benefit from his advice to aspiring internet sleuths (I'd rather read Dame Agatha, thanks) I'm sure there are readers out there who found his words ?

vivastory incredibly inspiring & helpful. Luckily the book isn't too consumed by his advice. I definitely recommend reading McNamara's book first. I liked this book, but having read some truly mind-blowing true crime since November it's not necessarily one of the best of the genre I've read the past few months. Still recommend. 4y
LeahBergen I‘ve been interested in getting this one. I was enthralled with I‘ll Be Gone in the Dark! 😮 (edited) 4y

So I read somewhere that sometimes when people are looking for missing persons online its actually the abuser trying to continue to control their victims. (that may be an urban legend/fake news/scare tactics thing). This chapter I am reading is all about how Billy Jensen was using Facebook and Twitter to help look for missing persons. But then again having everyone come together to look for someone or clues makes perfect sense to me too.

So. I am really enjoying this book but.. Its big and one that I don't carry around with me (which I should) so... I am gonna need to make myself a timetable to get this one done in the next week. Here is the plan! This will get me done within the week (without pushing it too hard either)

AkashaVampie Those bears are super cute. Are they stick-its? 4y
ElizaMarie @AkashaVampie not sure what “stick-its“ is. Like is it a brand? But anyway, they are little stickies (they aren't super strong though which is kinda annoying and why I only use it to help with planning a book) 4y
AsYouWish The bears are super cute and I love this idea of planning out your reading! I do the same thing on a smaller scale, I don‘t do the whole book, just sections at a time. Almost like making daily goals of how far I want to read that day. 4y

AkashaVampie @ElizaMarie yeah that's what I meant... Sorry I'm tired! And @AsYouWish is right. That is a great way to plan out ur reading. I should do that if I read physical books! 4y
ElizaMarie @AsYouWish Thanks! I don't do it for all books, but I like to do it for books that I am having a hard time focusing on. Like books I enjoy and definitely want to finish but... books that for some reason or another I haven't picked up as much as I initially thought I would. It is only about 30 pages a day so its very doable! 4y
MissAimz_55 Great idea I may do that with some of my books I need to finish by a certain time... IE my library books that don‘t allow renewals 😂 4y

This book tells of Billy going from a crime reporter to aiding police departments with unsolved crimes using social media and helping to solve ten murder cases as a result. I enjoyed this, esp hearing Billy‘s experience working alongside Michelle McNamara and their hunt for the Golden State Killer. I wasn‘t keen on the ‘how to‘ guide at the end with his advice on becoming a ‘citizen detective‘ but other than that a great read for true crime fans!

jb72 Yeah I had to run an errand today (bank). I‘m getting ready to nap. 😴 4y
ElizaMarie @jessinikkip The problem is... everything is “needed“ but then I hate it because things spoil since I don't eat it fast enough. I picked up some staple items for work : oatmeal, soups. Anyway, I should have gone in with a list. I know I forgot something and I still can't think of what I missed. 4y
ElizaMarie @jb72 Just the driving in traffic makes me all tired and ready for a break! I went all the way across town to do a test for work (like a mask fit test) only to find out the place didn't do them (I was told to go to the wrong clinic) ugh. it was like 20 min in traffic for that! 4y
jb72 @ElizaMarie oh that sucks. That happened to me about a month ago. I had to travel to UPS store for a return and they were closed. I was so made because I had driven an hour! 4y

This is basically an invitation to help solve murders through social media. Jensen has developed a way to find those responsible for crimes by boosting Facebook ads to targeted populations. He has had some success doing so, with the go-ahead from police and families of the victims. This book includes actual instructions on how to begin solving crimes using this method! Tempting! Billy's background & friendship with M.McNamara are heavily featured

This one seems to be more reflective about the author's life and how he became a journalist and later on invested in the unsolved crimes he covered. As seen here with my after dinner snack of peanut butter banana "sandwiches" ? ?

This one was a good follow up for me: I had started Michelle MacNamara's I'll Be Gone In The Dark and had to stop as the writing was great and it scared the crap out of me. Chase Darkness With Me is written by Billy Jensen - a friend of Michelle's who assisted with finishing her book. His book is written from an interesting perspective and sheds light on true crime - without being too scary.

When you have a six hour trip ahead of you, a true crime audiobook is the way to go. Jensen is awesome. He is so passionate about catching the evil in this world that is hard not to get caught up in the thrill. But he also makes it real; it‘s not all fun, it‘s soul crushing and it can be dangerous. I marvel at the citizen detectives out there. Kudos to all of you!

Another one I loved. I am a huge proponent of using DNA to catch criminals and also to identify victims (check out the Bear Brook case). The idea of crowdsourcing investigations is fascinating and one that seems to be working. Of course, there have to be rules, and Billy explains those in detail here and on the podcast he does with Paul Holes. Best quote regarding this book, from Billy: it is the true crime book with the most Star Wars references
