Whoa! The story got good all of a sudden. There‘s only 10 percent of it left to read, and I have to know what happens!!

Ugh!! This book is making me so uncomfortable. The writing is good but the subjects, which include repugnant moral choices, unwise sexual attractions, and unquestionably arrogant behavior, make this novel unbelievably hard to read. I have a feeling that my tension is not going to disappear any time soon, but I‘m only midway through this book! 😳
I just started this book by an #Israeli author as my second read for the #LibraryThing 75 Books in 2022 group‘s Asian Book Challenge to read a book by an #Israeli or Palestinian author. This was the author‘s debut novel which starts out with a #neurosurgeon striking a man with his speeding SUV and most likely killing him. What comes next? I don‘t know. I have to go back and keep reading...
The best thing about this book was the chocolate bar from Israel that I ate while reading it. The book was slow, wordy, and confusing at times. I didn‘t really like any of the characters. I almost bailed but already did on the other book I had for #foodandlit this month so I stuck with it.
@Texreader @Butterfinger
Molly would rather I put down the book and snuggle with her.
I‘m just over half way done with this and still not sure what I think of it. Hoping to finish it tomorrow. #foodandlit @Butterfinger @Texreader
Happy Easter. An amazing spring day and a good time to finish this one for Israel #foodandlit. While the story sagged in the middle, it was overall an interesting mix of mystery and introspection. One review summed it up as ethically ambiguous which is appropriate.
#AnglophileApril One of my favorite reads from 2017💟Eitan Green is a well respected dr, who‘s overworked & underpaid. One night after pulling a double shift, exhausted beyond belief he accidentally hits “something” on the desert road with his car. Thinking it was an animal, he pulls over to discover the “something” was an African migrant. In a moment of panic & irrational thinking, he leaves the dead man on the side of the road. But someone saw.
"...und er dachte sich gerade, dies sei der schönste Mond, den er je gesehen habe, als er diesen Mann umfuhr. Und als er ihn umfuhr, dachte er im ersten Moment immer noch an den Mond, dachte weiter an den Mond und hörte dann mit einem Schlag auf, als hätte man eine Kerze ausgeblasen..."
Was ein Buch!

This is one of those “What in the heck did I just read” books.
Not quite through this one but love the premise of what makes a man a criminal or a hero. Not everything is so clear.
With two hours left in part 1 and more than 6 hours in part 2, I cannot take anymore and am bailing. The thought of 8 more hours unnerves me. There is little action (about 15% of the story) while the bulk of the story is comprised of the characters‘ thoughts. Very repetitive thoughts at that. I‘m bored senseless. Sorry to everyone who gave this such high marks! Not my kind of story.
I needed another Audible book to get through some housework today so I chose this one I bought some months ago. Overly dramatic narrator and a strange writing style for depicting some of the characters but intriguing nonetheless. I‘m not very far into it but it is good so far.
I came across the tagged book at Barnes and Noble and just thought it sounded interesting. Eitan who is a doctor hits a man with his SUV on the way home one night and upon discovering the man is going to die he leaves and doesn‘t report it and his wife is a detective! That‘s all I‘m gonna tell you!
This is how we spent our morning...My daughter and I laying around reading while my sister worked! 😝❤️
Wow. What an intense ride that was. I still don‘t know how I feel about any of the main characters, and I can‘t say the story left me feeling satisfied afterwards. But it kept me intrigued to the very end. 3.5 ⭐️
A tale of guilt with a unique voice. The story slowly reveals itself and is disturbing at each revelation. I couldn‘t put it down.
They came!! The rest of the books I won in the Little, Brown, & Co Feminist Library Sweepstakes are here! I could not be more excited. Now I just need more bookshelf space...
In the abrupt, hectic end to my weekend/start of my week I forgot to post my #BookHaul from the Strand! In all its discounted glory, behold! I‘m proud of the diversity of subjects & authors included here— I‘m also excited to have picked up Welcome to Lagos a couple weeks ahead of its hardcover re-release in May 😄
Anyone already read & recommend any of these?!
Lots to think about in this tragic story of a doctor who accidentally hits a man with his car one night driving home from the hospital in Israel. What makes a “good man” become a criminal? Or is he in fact a hero?
I have book club in about 9 hours and am just starting this one. Hopefully I can finish it! (I have some long waits today that will help.)
It‘s a challenge mashup post:
Top row are #dark reads @Jess7 #NoteWorthyNovember
Bottom row are my choice for #beachreads #🏝📚 @RealLifeReading #emojinov
All read in 2017...Young Jane Young & Waking Lions are my top two
Every Man A Menace was a sleeper hit ( yay #BOTM )
A beautifully written novel about an Israeli doctor who hits a man while driving and suffers the spiraling consequences of his rash decisions. Intensely character based, with a plot that is at times mesmerizing but can also seem farfetched.
#JubilantJuly #SizzlinSummerReads #BestofJuly Wow! Another month...a new #BOTM tomorrow all new challenges ahead...time is flying 🚀🚀🚀I read 12 books this month 😊10 fiction 2 nonfiction The 4 above were my #JulyFaves
This debut really blew me away! A gripping psychological thriller set in modern day Israel. A cunning story, of a bad choice that leads to all sorts of moral and personal crisis...a shifty tale trying to sort who are the good guys? bad guys? A fascinating look at Israel's mixed nationalities and citizens ( both legal & illegal) and how they all converge in a small dusty town. Loved it ~ aside from a few paragraphs that stood out as awkward
Today was a long day, but so much fun! I'm loving this book almost as much as hanging out at "Camp Weissman" ☀️For the past 3 summers we've been staying with childhood friends for a long weekend, which we affectionately call camp because they have such awesome amenities...so this summer our friends had t-shirts & totes printed?
Ok, so it's almost noon but this morning I did a yoga class with my friend, enjoyed a berry bowl for breakfast on my friend's deck & sat with a new book #puremorning 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
"What was the price of silence? What was the price of a man's life?"
This quote sticks with me. I've been thinking a lot about the price we pay for our actions (and inactions). Given the state of things these days, I think it's important to evaluate the cost of remaining silent. The cost of sitting down--passively observing--instead of standing up and speaking out against things that are flat out wrong. What *is* the price of silence?
This books language is smooth and flowing. It is translated from Hebrew and reads like many translated books do, with hints of the original language in the flow of the words. The story was good but the end seemed sudden and not full. Needed better follow through.
Great deals on the Kindle Daily Deal today!!! Would highly recommend both of these!!!
Well Amazon, I vowed not to spend anymore money but I couldn't pass up these wonderful deals. Most were only $2.99 for the Kindle. #ebookdeals
Oops..
OMG!! This book! The writing here is sharp, observant and lyrical. This book grabbed me right out of the gate and I could barely put it down. I think this will be a favorite of 2017!!!
#AprilBookShowers
Here's the first line of the book I picked up today! Gets the action started right out of the gate!!
#TBRTuesday
Here's what's on deck for this week. Working on my ARCs and library books. With a little room to pick up something on a whim.
Bonfire of the Vanities in the Negev. MD Eitan Green accidentally runs down Eritrean man & leaves the scene. Implausible, unpredictable results and generally spellbinding narrative. Relationships with spouse, children, colleagues aired out and examined with unexpected outcomes. Worthwhile, and largely well-written. Could have been better edited and slimmed down by about fifty pages.
This book is out today!!! Hooray!!! I read this egalley a few weeks ago and fell deep in love with this story. It's a dark, wild ride--as I read it, I had to keep my husband updated on the plot because he was dying to know how the story ended. Highly recommend!
We both brought orange books for the dentist's waiting room today! 🙂 #raisingreaders
This didn't twist, turn, startle or grip me and I've had to leave after 100 pages. After the sparkle of Measuring the World, I found the writing in this a little turgid. I didn't like the protagonist & it seemed to move slowly after the dramatic opening where he runs over & kills a man. I'd like to try her other work as the ideas & setting are interesting.
"He's thinking that the moon is the most beautiful he has ever seen when he hits the man."
If #firstlines are anything to go by, this will be a great read. ? #booktober #greatfirstlines
Waking up to #NationalCoffeeDay with this literary thriller... ☕️☕️☕️ (possibly a day late but it's always a coffee day at my place!)
Help! All from my TBR. All sound wonderful. Where to start? Tempted by 'whispering Muse' to stay in theme after 'whispering shadows' & seeing Bjork digital show recently. #translatedbooks #somethingforseptember #septphotochallenge
