Lord of Chaos
Lord of Chaos: Book Six of 'The Wheel of Time' | Robert Jordan
In this sequel to the phenomenal New York Times bestseller The Fires of Heaven, we plunge again into Robert Jordan's extraordinarily rich, totally unforgettable world: On the slopes of Shayol Ghul, the Myrddraal swords are forged, and the sky is not the sky of this world; In Salidar the White Tower in exile prepares an embassy to Caemlyn, where Rand Al'Thor, the Dragon Reborn, holds the throne--and where an unexpected visitor may change the world.... In Emond's Field, Perrin Goldeneyes, Lord of the Two Rivers, feels the pull of ta'veren to ta'veren and prepares to march.... Morgase of Caemlyn finds a most unexpected, and quite unwelcome, ally....And south lies Illian, where Sammael holds sway....

Bk1 of July & the #20in4 #readathon is done! The 6th book of WOT it‘s one of the darkest so far. Rand, The Dragon Reborn, is trying to become the leader that‘s needed, Egwene is finally summoned back to the rebel Aes Sedai where Elayne & Nynaeve are hiding secrets.Rand finds the location of the rebels & sends Mat & the Band to rescue them.Perrin shows up in Caemlyn with Loial before the Travel to Cairhien where Rand is kidnapped. #SeriesLove2023👇

I‘m kicking off my #20in4 #readathon with the last half of this chunkster. Bk6 of The Wheel Of Time series, there‘s a lot happening in this book. Rand has taken Andor after killing Rahvin, one of the Forsaken, and is Traveling back & forth between Caemlyn & Cairhien. Elayne & Nynaeve are cooling their heels in the rebel Aes Sedai village while Mat is leading the Band of the Red Hand towards Illian. Then all hell breaks loose!

Andrew65 Best of luck, you're certainly having a year of Chunksters! 😁 10mo

Whew- done with book 6 of The Wheel Of Time series. This was not my favorite, and I‘m getting a bit lost in the plot and characters. Going to take a break and read something else before moving on to book 7 (Maybe).

I didn't think I was gonna like this as much as I did, given what happened on the last book to my favorite character, but I ended up enjoying it quite a bit. Aes Sedai centric plots are always good.

Perrin is back, and his wife is awful to him and I wish he had someone nicer. He deserves better. Also, what is potentially an unpopular opinion: Nynaeve is the worst character, and she's definitely a republican. Everyone else has made some growth, even if very small, except for Nynaeve. I'm so tired of any of her sections. If I had a physical book, I would skim her sections. She does not deserve Lan. 7/10

Starting the day with the next book in The Wheel of Time and a cup of tea in a new favorite mug, and I was amused by how well the colors go together. A dear friend of mine had these made for our old D&D group and presented them to us in character, complete with excerpts from the "book" his character is writing about our adventures. It is one of the coolest gifts I have ever been given. ?

Nelnjali This beloved character was part of a series of campaigns that took place over the course of 5-years real-time and ages in game. My first, and possibly only ever, level 20 (max level) character. 2y

I haven't finished a book in a while because we were at Disney World for the past 8 days. My husband and I listened to this on our road trip, and it kinda sucked because he can't do faster than 1 speed, and I'm used to 2 or higher for these. It was so slooooowww. I'm not sure I'd have enjoyed it all that much at my speed, but it didn't help. We started the next book together too, but now that we aren't road tripping, I'm back to 2.25. Whew.

There is so much going on in this book. There are some major changes for some of the main characters. The rescue mission and battle at the end are the most memorable moments of this book. I'm looking forward to the last 8 books!

I passed page 800 on today‘s clear, windy #audiowalk. The end is nigh! (Well, nigh-ish.)

I‘m excited I‘m now at the part where Egwene‘s badassery really kicks in. The stuff she does from here on out is why she‘s one of my faves.

We tried for costumed walkies today, but Casey‘s shark outfit didn‘t play well with his harness. Oh well.

Between walkies, sewing, and Candy Crush, I‘m now halfway through my LORD OF CHAOS reread! I‘m enjoying it a lot, but I‘ve REALLY noticed all the unnecessary repetition this time around.

Graywacke Casey so cute! Good luck with WoT. Series starts soon. 2y
Lreads Aww! Casey looks a bit grumpy! But still cute. 😍 2y
xicanti @Graywacke I think I picked the wrong moment for my reread. I decided to go audio this time, for variety, and the show‘s generated so much interest that my library‘s got looooong waiting lists for each book. I‘m enjoying them as they arrive, though! 2y
See All 7 Comments
xicanti @QuietlyLaura this is his, “Ugh; they dressed me up as a shark AGAIN,” face. 2y
Graywacke @xicanti I hadn‘t considered audio. Huh. I picked up book one recently and read the beginning…then put it back on the shelf. I remember when I first read it in December of 1990. I was so taken in, and taken so far away from the real world. 🙂 2y
xicanti @Graywacke I was really disappointed with the first book when I reread it in 2014. I mostly kept going because I was reading for the Hugo Awards, and I enjoyed the next few so much that I‘m very glad I did. The series had a LOT of flaws, but when it‘s on it‘s totally transportive. 2y
Graywacke @xicanti I completely agree. For what it‘s worth, when I read book one, which was lent to me on a vacation, I wasn‘t a reader. Then i got carried away, which was something new to me, and that‘s the book that converted me to a reader. (I was 17) So i have a lot of affection for the series and all it‘s flaws - slow, repetitive - which also is maybe how it reinforces its reality. And he was a decent writer. (Sorry, got a little carried away here.) 2y

I rolled out a substantial number of hand pie crusts while I listened to LORD OF CHAOS. Most of them are now beef & bacon pies, but I did experiment with Montreal smoked meat & mustard in one of them. It was delish.

The reread‘s going well, too, and I‘m glad the narrators have started pronouncing Moghedien‘s name more or less the way I do. I‘ve always called her Mo-gideon (#somanygideons) but they said Mo-gih-deen throughout FoH. #audiocooking

Now that's more like it! Just as things were starting to drag in book 5, along comes book 6 to throw the series into overdrive. The already huge cast of characters is expanded even further, and the number of POVs the story is told from seems to double. You would think this would serve to muddle things, but quite the opposite, this was the most focused and best-paced storytelling of the series so far. A hundred and one momentous events...👇

The_Penniless_Author ...take place over the course of these thousand pages, but the real thrill is seeing them transpire from the vantage point of a dozen separate factions, all with varying levels of understanding of what's taking place, and seeing how these misunderstandings are destined to lead to conflict. By leaps and bounds the best plotted and executed WoT book so far. It's great to see the payoff from such meticulous world building. 3y
The_Penniless_Author @Graywacke I can see why this was your favorite! 3y
Graywacke @The_Penniless_Author this whole review just makes me happy. 🙂 I‘m glad you enjoyed. (I wonder how the series will work out. Will this be season six?) 3y
See All 6 Comments
The_Penniless_Author @Graywacke That will be interesting to see. Depending on how closely they stick to the books, you could probably get six seasons out of book 1 alone, or cram multiple books into a single season. I know I'm going to groan over stuff that's been changed or cut out, no matter how much I tell myself not to 😂 3y
Graywacke @The_Penniless_Author i agree. Book one could fill a lot of film in theory. And whatever we get will have a cut dramatically. So I‘m trying to prep myself for entertainment not accuracy or even character integrity in the series. Trying to keep an open mind. 🙂 3y
The_Penniless_Author @Graywacke Me too. It's one of the conundrums I face anytime someone adapts a book I love into a TV series or movie. Theoretically, I know that in order to make entertaining television out of literature a lot of cuts and changes are necessary. And yet, the more I love the book the less I'm able to enjoy the series/film on its own terms. 3y

Demandred stepped out onto the black slopes of Shayol Ghul, and the gateway, a hole in reality's fabric, winked out of existence.

The_Penniless_Author @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm I'm loving this book so far, maybe my favorite in the series! The fifth book really dragged in places and I was afraid the wheels were starting to come off, but this one has been perfectly paced throughout. 3y
The_Penniless_Author @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm BTW, have you seen the Prime trailer for the TV series yet? If so, what did you think? 3y
See All 6 Comments
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm I was actually very impressed with the trailer. The Trollocs and Myrddraal are just how I imagined them. From what I‘ve seen, it looks like their portrayal of channeling is pretty true to the story. I know weaves aren‘t necessarily supposed to be visible to everyone, but I think that would make it pretty boring for us viewers. I was already happy with the casting, and now that I‘ve seen some interactions, I‘m very excited!😍 What‘re your thoughts? 3y
The_Penniless_Author @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm I'm right there with you regarding the special effects. I like the Trollocs and Myrddraal too, and the settings - especially the cities - look properly "grand". As for the casting...I'm not sure ? First, I should add a caveat that I ALWAYS have a problem with casting for adaptations of beloved books. No one ever looks anything close to what I pictured, but that seems to hold true no matter who's chosen ? 3y
The_Penniless_Author @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm At the same time, I fully subscribe to the idea that for an adaptation to succeed on its own merits as a TV series or movie, it needs to depart from the source material. So I'll try to detach a bit while I watch this and try to enjoy it for what it is instead of constantly comparing it to the books. 3y

This edition, more than any other Wheel of Time novel before it, spent the majority of the novel building up to the massive series changing battle at the end. However good the pay off was, it was a definite slog to get to it.

I can‘t stop reading these books!🤩 In this one, Perrin is back, Egwene develops into a very impressive young woman, and the ending…😳😱 The bickering between Elayne and Nyneave is still annoying at times, as is Rand and Mat‘s conviction that only they know what needs to be done. But then, to a certain extent this also makes them human...☺️
