The Friend Zone
The Friend Zone | Abby Jimenez
Fall in love with this "deliciously hot, sweet" (L.J. Shen, USA Today bestselling author) romantic comedy perfect for fans of Christina Lauren and Helen Hoang. Kristen Petersen doesn't do drama, will fight to the death for her friends, and has no room in her life for guys who just don't get her. She's also keeping a big secret: facing a medically necessary procedure that will make it impossible for her to have children. Planning her best friend's wedding is bittersweet for Kristen -- especially when she meets the best man, Josh Copeland. He's funny, sexy, never offended by her mile-wide streak of sarcasm, and always one chicken enchilada ahead of her hangry. Even her dog, Stuntman Mike, adores him. The only catch: Josh wants a big family someday. Kristen knows he'd be better off with someone else, but as their attraction grows, it's harder and harder to keep him at arm's length. The Friend Zone will have you laughing one moment and grabbing for tissues the next as it tackles the realities of infertility and loss with wit, heart, and a lot of sass.

This was another super sweet and sexy romance, but it also has dimension. The characters have real flaws and go through real-life hardships, and it makes the love story all the sweeter. I cried with both sadness and happiness throughout most of the last quarter of the book. I'm excited to read Jimenez's other books, and I've already downloaded one!

wanderinglynn I love her books. The next one, The Happily Ever After Playlist, is my fave of the 3. 2mo

I loved the complexity of it's characters & their relationships. Kristen's reluctance to share the truth with Josh gets really frustrating, but the way he handles it, & the way the other characters in the book do as well, felt realistic & not part of some glossy romantic fantasy. Like the other books in this series, the emotional complexity in this one kept me so invested that I devoured this book.

I think you get the plot from the title, so…

I read this book out of order, which was kind of a bummer since I knew about a significant episode in the plot. But it was still enjoyable.

Jimenez‘s romance packs a gut punch somewhere along the way, so if you like a little in the mix, this author is for you.

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I thought this was super cute and I loved the romance and the friendship. I thought Kristen was annoyingly stubborn at times for not wanting to be with Josh. I did find this book to be a satisfying read. I do want to warn that the last bit of the book is on the heavy side.

I don‘t have high expectations for romance books—I expect them to use the same tropes & be a comfort read. I rated this a pick because I liked the characters & most of the story. I don‘t think it will be a favorite though. As usual with many romances, the conflict can be fixed with communication, & I felt the MC took way too long to communicate.

I was not expecting to love this book and these characters so much. I spent the last third of the book crying tears of sadness and happiness. What a roller coaster. I love love loved this book.

TheLucindaLife Also, usually vows in movies or books always seem contrived, predictable, and unfeeling to me but these felt more real. I cried when she said “You will never have to chase me again,“ and again when he promised to take care of Sloan forever, both to honor Kristen and his best friend, Brandon. 10mo

5/5 for this contemporary romance! This book was just so good. I didn‘t know I would cry. I laughed too. I loved Kristen. She was so feisty and lovely. Josh was the hot guy that will take care of you. They were so perfect. I loved their banter. I definitely recommend this.

My takeaways: I don‘t technically believe in love at first sight, but I do think you know when you meet the right person you are meant to be with happens VERY quickly! Friendship is crucial in finding that love, two people must have the same interests and values and likes to make it an everlasting love. When you find that person, don‘t hold back life is too short! #reading #books #bookreview #romcom #fiction #read #book #reads

I'm obsessed with this new-to-me genre of easy going contemporary romance. So I stocked up at the library and am jumping in today.

Moonprismpower I‘m seeing and buying a lot more of these now as I buy books for my library. But I haven‘t been a fan of the cover art, it‘s kind of blah to me. But I am happy that I‘m seeing more of it as well because I‘m kind of getting tired of buying all the murder thriller mystery books I mean not every book has to have someone who dies in it. 12mo
Wildly_Bookish I mostly agree, and although the covers are sometimes plain, the bright colors look really nice together on my shelf. 12mo

This book wrecked me...in the best way. As a woman with fertility and reproductive issues, to see the topic handled with such raw emotion and vulnerability was such a gut punch; I saw so much of myself in Kristen. The humor and wit balance the emotion so skillfully. I finished this in a matter of hours. Five stars. Hands down.

The annoying thing about this book is I liked the author‘s writing style, and think I would have enjoyed it more if it didn‘t have the sexist and problematic elements. The internalized misogyny grated on me.

I really empathized with Kristen, and 🙌🏽 for a book that talks about periods and chronic illness. As an #endowarrior, I really related to that aspect. But the cool girl trope was 🙄🙄.

CaliforniaCay Ooooh I'm not big on romances but having recently had the big surgery myself I would actually like to read a book that features a character going through that! Stacked! 13mo
4thhouseontheleft @CaliforniaCay that‘s one of the reasons why I picked it up! I have endometriosis, and had a hysterectomy almost 2 years ago. #hystersister 💞 I would add a TW for fertility issues, ans if it wasn‘t for the afterword, I probably would have hated one of the twists. 13mo
CaliforniaCay I'm honestly considering writing a book about my experience with fibroids because I didnt realize how common that and endometriosis were until I went through it. Wish it was discussed more. Any other books you can think of that handle hysterectomy experiences, feel free to tag me! 13mo
BayouGirl85 I preferred The Happily Ever After Playlist from this author. 13mo

The author of The Friend Zone is also the owner of Nadia Cakes, of Food Network fame.

She mentions Nadia Cakes in Chapter 34. Do you think it is clever, cute, or cringy for the author to name drop her own bakery in the novel?

Julsmarshall I loved it! 13mo
4thhouseontheleft @Julsmarshall Imm not loving the book, but I liked the nod to Nadia Cakes! 13mo
MallenNC The bakery gets mentioned in The Happy Ever After Playlist (which I didn‘t know was a sequel when I started) and I didn‘t know it was her bakery until I got to the author bio at the end. (edited) 13mo
4thhouseontheleft @MallenNC I almost read Happy ever Playlist first, but did realize it was a sequel. I‘m still going to give that one a listen, ans hope that the things I didn‘t like about her first book don‘t appear in the second. 13mo
MallenNC @4thhouseontheleft I liked it, and the fact that it was a sequel ended up being ok for me. It did have one of my romance pet peeves, though. I hate couples who just fall apart as people when they are not together. 13mo

This started strong, but 1/2 way in I am really starting to dislike it. Too many problematic tropes and sexism.

Since I‘m listening to it while doing other things, I‘m torn between bailing or not. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Starting to feel a slide into my spring pandemic, I can‘t stand every book I pick up mood. 😩 Or maybe, it‘s just that this book sucks?

4thhouseontheleft @DGRachel I ended up continuing to listen, and am almost done. Jimenez is a good writer, or at least she writes conversations well, but the whole book is a bit of a hot mess that I find hard to look away from. 😂 13mo

It‘s a busy week, and I just started this light 🎧 📖 to listen to while I work. So far, it‘s exactly what I was looking for, an engaging story that doesn‘t involve a lot of mental energy to follow, and keeps me motivated during the work day 🤣.

A lot of reviews slam the ending as cringy and awful, which makes me wonder what I‘m in for.

YIKES. 1st, there is a LOT of internalized misogyny — the “cool girl/not like other girls” trope, + gender-specific generalizations like “a lot of women cheat when their men are deployed.” 2nd, the last third of this book is absolutely atrocious. There‘s a terrible, unnecessary plot point, & an even worse ending. Ugh. Basically, a story that is meant to uplift women who struggle with fertility slaps them in the face instead. ★☆☆☆☆.

CoveredInRust Was thinking about reading this one hoping it would tackle the crappy term that is "friend zone"... glad to see your reasons behind not liking it. Don't think I'll bother. 14mo
Sharanya @CoveredInRust yeah, the title is one of the things I couldn‘t work out about this novel — nobody in the book is ever, at all, in “the friend zone” 🙄. Def would steer clear! 14mo

The plot is based on 2 ideas: 1, Kristen is “cooler than other girls“ & 2, she refuses to tell Josh the truth (despite the book making a point of telling us she's outspoken & doesn't care what others think, even boyfriends). It frustratingly felt so surface level, despite the fact that I really was interested in her problems. The last 1/3 of the book finally became emotionally moving, but I wished the rest had built up better to that ending.

readordierachel Ah the cool girl trope. Always makes me think of Gone Girl 😆 1y

⭐⭐⭐⭐/⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

MsMelissa I liked this but was really disappointed by the ending. 1y
mom2bugnbee @Book_Fiend_Melissa Just curious what you didn't like - her getting pregnant? 1y
MsMelissa Yes, that‘s exactly it. I thought it took away from the message that I thought the author was trying to convey with the book. I would have preferred they lived happily ever after and adopted instead, as that would have been closer to the reality many women in her situation in real-life would have had. Still, I recognize pregnancy can still happen so I didn‘t hate the end, just wish it had been different. 1y
