A captivating and powerful exploration of the opioid crisis—the deadliest drug epidemic in American history—through the eyes of a college-bound softball star. Edgar Award-winning author Mindy McGinnis delivers a visceral and necessary novel about addiction, family, friendship, and hope. When a car crash sidelines Mickey just before softball season, she has to find a way to hold on to her spot as the catcher for a team expected to make a historic tournament run. Behind the plate is the only place she’s ever felt comfortable, and the painkillers she’s been prescribed can help her get there. The pills do more than take away pain; they make her feel good. With a new circle of friends—fellow injured athletes, others with just time to kill—Mickey finds peaceful acceptance, and people with whom words come easily, even if it is just the pills loosening her tongue. But as the pressure to be Mickey Catalan heightens, her need increases, and it becomes less about pain and more about want, something that could send her spiraling out of control.

This book doesn‘t deserve a bright or colourful picture. Because it‘s so dark and terrifying you can barely stand reading it without crying. It‘s not the light summer read I‘m going to recommend to everyone. But it‘s a must-read book. I couldn‘t stop thinking about it a whole week after I finished it.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5!! Wow!! This book was so intoxicating! It was one of those books I couldn‘t put down and when I did I was thinking about it and eager to get back to it. HIGHLY recommend. ⚠️: it does deal with addiction.

This book was heavy and hard to read. I think one of the reasons I finished it in two days is because I wanted to stop feeling so sad for where the story was going. The first line of the books tells the reader how bad things are going to get. “When I wake up, all my friends are dead.” In a time when opiates seems to be commonplace, it is important to understand how the addiction can not only ruin your life, but kill as well, and kill fast.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ What didn‘t work: 1) why would a mom (who is a Dr.!) let her teen be in charge of oxy post-op and 2) why is there a theme of “not being rich/can‘t afford college without a softball scholarship” if mom is, indeed a doctor? But, if you can get past that, this is a brutal account of a student athlete getting hooked on opioids and how it spirals out of her control. It‘s really terrifying...and a necessary read. I couldn‘t put it down.

This month I am going to try and finish 31 books. I will not necessarily have begun the book this month so it won‘t exactly be a book a day. I will also allow myself to reread. But I need this challenge in order to stop myself from spending so much time on my phone. The first book I completed was Heroine by Mindy McGinnis, had an hour left on my audiobook this morning. 5/5 Stars. #AJreads31books

I read this 400 page book in two days, and even though so much of it made me angry, disgusted, sad, and sick, I needed to know what happened. It did shed light on the opioid crisis and how easy it is for the right person to fall ill to addiction, even if they're a good person and never did drugs before in their lives. However, I struggled to sympathize with the character when it unsurprisingly got her into trouble.

Book 9 in O.W.L.s readathon prompt was muggle studies=read contemporary book-also discussed in my book club with author interview through Skype. This is how Micky Catalan became drug user/addicted/dependent. Author made a good research in this topic, you can see "criminal thinking errors" process to justify her behavior. Some areas were resolved quickly but author said had the purpose to bring hope. Usually I don't like this topic but it was ok3.4⭐️

Kaylamburson I'm reading this right now! I'm liking it a lot, but it's also making me so angry and sad. 4mo
Gissy @Kaylamburson I experienced those feelings too. I think it is hard topic and yes so sad as soon as start it you see what is going to happen to her. 4mo
Kaylamburson I know...I've dreaded the end from the beginning prologue. I didn't know what it was about going into it. Someone just recommended it to me and I mindlessly picked it up next time I saw it at the library. 4mo
See All 8 Comments
Gissy @Kaylamburson Let me know your opinion when you finish it. 4mo
Kaylamburson I've finished it. I'm happy with the ending that not everything is back to normal, but she has support and her future has promise, but I think I'm just like Carolina. I want to understand, but I just can't completely. The author did a great job showing how someone who is a "good kid" can get into a mess like this through "no fault of their own", but it still makes me so angry and I do still blame her. I'm trying to be empathetic and I'm struggling 4mo
Gissy @Kaylamburson there were many factors of why a person can become addicted or drug dependent. In this case I didn't like that she was adopted because it could lead to some kind of discrimination but Mickey was lonely, it seemed she had a low self esteem, her parents recently divorced and she was still struggling with that. Her family had too high expectations about her. They worked with physical aspect but not the emotional one. 4mo
Gissy @Kaylamburson It is like when two persons come from the same parents but one of them takes the wrong path in life. 4mo
Kaylamburson Yeah, that's all very true. I do see why she was more susceptible. Just a lot of mixed emotions here. 4mo

This book was absolutely amazing! I listened to it on audible and was having almost constant shivers. The story is about a high school athlete who got into an accident which led her into having an opioid addiction. This book was just so raw and real. It‘s definitely going to be one of my favorite books of this year.

GinaKButler In my IRL book club we all throw the name of 5 books in the hat and randomly draw three for our summer reading...I think this is going to be one of mine! 🤞🏼 4mo
OnlyYoo @GinaKButler if it ends up getting picked, let me know what you thought! 4mo
GinaKButler @OnlyYoo I will! I‘m reading it either way...I‘m on the waitlist from my library. I have a family member who had similar problems after a hockey surgery, so I‘m very interested to read this! 4mo

This was between a pick and a so-so. The author did a great job depicting the evil cycle of pain and drugs and addiction, the obsession and compulsion, and the thought process that goes along with that, but she left out a few key components that are crucial to continuing recovery. The book goes into detail about suffering but glosses over the recovery process. As a recovering addict, I believe the process of getting clean matters as much as how⬇

Eggbeater A person got addicted. She was right that it becomes about more than just physical pain relief, but about how you cope with the stress of that pain, and then pretty soon just how you cope with stress period, then ultimately this little pill is bigger than you. She was wrong when she had a character say that you never stop wanting drugs after you get clean. It's not that black and white. ⬇ 4mo
Eggbeater You can have fleeting moments when you think of drugs and then let the idea go. You can develop tools to counteract, reduce, and prevent cravings. That was never mentioned in this book. Certain scenes did make me a bit itchy, but I read other recovery literature and I remembered what to do. I've found reaching out to other recovering addicts for support is the common denominator in most healthy real-life success stories. 4mo
Gissy I have to read this one for book club next week. I don't like this topic so I will try very hard to see if I can finish it😬 4mo
MidnightBookGirl I just finished today, and I wish the ending hadn't been handled so briefly. I took a lot of notes and I had a few other issues, but I'll save it for book club. 4mo

Doing some rainy day reading at work, and I'm just so drawn into this book and so very sorry for anyone struggling with pain- with or without the aid of medicine. The pressures we put on ourselves can be insane.

4thhouseontheleft My hubby is a surgeon and convinced one local hospital system to allow the use of Exparel (it is expensive), a non-opiate numbing painkiller that lasts for a few days post-op. I had it for my surgery, and the difference this time vs my last surgery is amazing. It‘s just starting to wear off now, and I have not needed the opiate prescription at all. Research shows it drastically reduces opiate use post-op. 4mo
MidnightBookGirl @4thhouseontheleft That is awesome news! There definitely needs to be a better way to treat pain. 4mo

Mickey Catalan just wants to be ready for her softball season but an accident sidelines her in preseason. She is desperate to stop the pain and the oxy she got from her doctor help her achieve that.

What a great story! You don‘t realize how easy it is for someone to become an addict especially when a doctor is prescribing them. Watching Mickey slide into a dark place was gritty and difficult. couldn‘t put it down.

Finally getting to this ebook ARC. So far, I'm so hooked.. it's such a sad but so true story for so many young people these days. I've seen addiction take hold to a few of my family members just by getting a prescription from a doctor after a surgery or a break.

So this story is close to home in many ways. It's hard to read because of that but the author is telling this story so well. I think it's a story that needs told. Over and over.

BookaholicNatty I‘m adding this to my TBR! It‘s definitely something that affects almost every single family in some way or another! 7mo

Anything can be a #BoogieMan in the right circumstances. After a car accident and a prescription that‘s run out, Mickey finds the pills she seeks from an elderly woman, along with a set of new, accepting friends, where need can turn quickly to want. — This comes out March of next year, but I have high hopes for it. #OctoberXFiles
