Heroine | Mindy McGinnis
A captivating and powerful exploration of the opioid crisisthe deadliest drug epidemic in American historythrough the eyes of a college-bound softball star. Edgar Award-winning author Mindy McGinnis delivers a visceral and necessary novel about addiction, family, friendship, and hope. When a car crash sidelines Mickey just before softball season, she has to find a way to hold on to her spot as the catcher for a team expected to make a historic tournament run. Behind the plate is the only place shes ever felt comfortable, and the painkillers shes been prescribed can help her get there. The pills do more than take away pain; they make her feel good. With a new circle of friendsfellow injured athletes, others with just time to killMickey finds peaceful acceptance, and people with whom words come easily, even if it is just the pills loosening her tongue. But as the pressure to be Mickey Catalan heightens, her need increases, and it becomes less about pain and more about want, something that could send her spiraling out of control.

This is right up there with Ellen Hopkins‘ trilogy as far as making the opioid epidemic, particularly among teenagers, so very, very real. I can‘t look away, but my God, it‘s so scary, and so sad. 😭 #heroine #mindymcginnis #druguse #opioidepidemic #triggerwarnings

Some late night reading. Started this one about a week ago and though reading is slow going for me lately, I‘m intrigued to see where the story goes and how the writing conveys certain elements of it.

This one is shaping up to be a miss for me from McGinnis‘s catalog 🫤 I‘m questioning my reading palate too since this seems to be in everyone‘s top 2 fav McGinnis books. Maybe FOTS set my expectations WAY too high or my mood reader senses are not in the mood. That‘s why I‘m setting it aside. IDK, but I just can‘t help but feel “meh” about almost everything in this book. I find Mickey‘s reasoning behind her addiction way too weak. 😭

jeannasser DISCLAIMER: Don‘t be surprised if my review of this when I do finish it ends up being a 10 or something like that. My mood reader self works like this. If I‘m not in the mood for contemporary I‘m not going to enjoy the book because I‘m just not in the mood. 😭😭 9mo

This book was one of the most difficult to get through because it is just so real.McGinnis doesn‘t shy away from the ugliest parts of addiction, and she doesn‘t try to offer any pat explanations for why it happens to some people and not others. With the current scourge of fentanyl that is killing people every day, an unflinching depiction of addiction like this one seems all the more timely.I highly recommend this, if you‘re in the right headspace.

BookLineNSinker I am in recovery and work as a substance abuse counselor and this book was a tough one to read for me. Just got a report from the public health department this week saying that since 3/21-3/22 overdoses have increased by 106%>>> in 1 year. It is happening now and it's brutal. 10mo

I‘m not enjoying this one as much as Be Not Far From Me and Female of the Species (I‘m sorry 😭) but I‘m still enjoying it a lot. The pacing is a little slow compared to the rest of her books I‘ve read and so far Mickey is my least favorite McGinnis MC.
That being said, it‘s McGinnis, so it‘s still an awesome book nonetheless. It gets darker and sadder the more I get into it so I might eat my words.

So far I‘ve learned that McGinnis = emotional destruction so I‘m ready for it today. My mood reader senses have been craving a lot of depressing stuff for no reason (also I wanna marathon all of McGinnis‘s books because she‘s starting to become one of my favorite female authors). How many tissues do I need for this one? Female of the Species almost made me run out.

GondorGirl This is a HARD read. I would keep a box nearby. 😭 11mo

BookDragonNotWorm Have you read the first sentence yet? If I remember it was a doozy of an opening. This is one of the best young adult books I have ever read. If it doesn't make you aware of signs and symptoms of addictions and withdrawals, then read it again. I would recommend this to parents. It definitely opens your eyes to just how easily it takes a person to develop a habit and of course, the opioid epidemic!

It'd be...like super cool if I could read A book by Mindy McGinnis that doesn't make me cry or hate someone. The book is incredibly important. Actually pretty amazingly ironic that someone on my FB posted a “Why is my EpiPen so expensive yet druggies get free Narcan“ post the afternoon I was reading this. It's because of greedy pharma companies KAREN!

Anyways, read this book.

Great novel that gives the reader a first person perspective of how slippery of a slope addiction can be. What we can‘t answer is why it happens to some and not others under seemingly similar circumstances. I‘m afraid I may have seen a cryptic Facebook post from an old friend that he may have lost his little brother to this disease yesterday. His other brother gone earlier this year. Unfathomable how I am seeing addiction claim lives this year.

This book was heavy and hard to read. I think one of the reasons I finished it in two days is because I wanted to stop feeling so sad for where the story was going. The first line of the books tells the reader how bad things are going to get. “When I wake up, all my friends are dead.” In a time when opiates seems to be commonplace, it is important to understand how the addiction can not only ruin your life, but kill as well, and kill fast.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ What didn‘t work: 1) why would a mom (who is a Dr.!) let her teen be in charge of oxy post-op and 2) why is there a theme of “not being rich/can‘t afford college without a softball scholarship” if mom is, indeed a doctor? But, if you can get past that, this is a brutal account of a student athlete getting hooked on opioids and how it spirals out of her control. It‘s really terrifying...and a necessary read. I couldn‘t put it down.

I read this 400 page book in two days, and even though so much of it made me angry, disgusted, sad, and sick, I needed to know what happened. It did shed light on the opioid crisis and how easy it is for the right person to fall ill to addiction, even if they're a good person and never did drugs before in their lives. However, I struggled to sympathize with the character when it unsurprisingly got her into trouble.

Book 9 in O.W.L.s readathon prompt was muggle studies=read contemporary book-also discussed in my book club with author interview through Skype. This is how Micky Catalan became drug user/addicted/dependent. Author made a good research in this topic, you can see "criminal thinking errors" process to justify her behavior. Some areas were resolved quickly but author said had the purpose to bring hope. Usually I don't like this topic but it was ok3.4⭐️

Kaylamburson I'm reading this right now! I'm liking it a lot, but it's also making me so angry and sad. 4y
Gissy @Kaylamburson I experienced those feelings too. I think it is hard topic and yes so sad as soon as start it you see what is going to happen to her. 4y
Kaylamburson I know...I've dreaded the end from the beginning prologue. I didn't know what it was about going into it. Someone just recommended it to me and I mindlessly picked it up next time I saw it at the library. 4y

Gissy @Kaylamburson Let me know your opinion when you finish it. 4y
Kaylamburson I've finished it. I'm happy with the ending that not everything is back to normal, but she has support and her future has promise, but I think I'm just like Carolina. I want to understand, but I just can't completely. The author did a great job showing how someone who is a "good kid" can get into a mess like this through "no fault of their own", but it still makes me so angry and I do still blame her. I'm trying to be empathetic and I'm struggling 4y
Gissy @Kaylamburson there were many factors of why a person can become addicted or drug dependent. In this case I didn't like that she was adopted because it could lead to some kind of discrimination but Mickey was lonely, it seemed she had a low self esteem, her parents recently divorced and she was still struggling with that. Her family had too high expectations about her. They worked with physical aspect but not the emotional one. 4y
Gissy @Kaylamburson It is like when two persons come from the same parents but one of them takes the wrong path in life. 4y
Kaylamburson Yeah, that's all very true. I do see why she was more susceptible. Just a lot of mixed emotions here. 4y

This was between a pick and a so-so. The author did a great job depicting the evil cycle of pain and drugs and addiction, the obsession and compulsion, and the thought process that goes along with that, but she left out a few key components that are crucial to continuing recovery. The book goes into detail about suffering but glosses over the recovery process. As a recovering addict, I believe the process of getting clean matters as much as how⬇

Eggbeater A person got addicted. She was right that it becomes about more than just physical pain relief, but about how you cope with the stress of that pain, and then pretty soon just how you cope with stress period, then ultimately this little pill is bigger than you. She was wrong when she had a character say that you never stop wanting drugs after you get clean. It's not that black and white. ⬇ 4y
Eggbeater You can have fleeting moments when you think of drugs and then let the idea go. You can develop tools to counteract, reduce, and prevent cravings. That was never mentioned in this book. Certain scenes did make me a bit itchy, but I read other recovery literature and I remembered what to do. I've found reaching out to other recovering addicts for support is the common denominator in most healthy real-life success stories. 4y
Gissy I have to read this one for book club next week. I don't like this topic so I will try very hard to see if I can finish it😬 4y
MidnightBookGirl I just finished today, and I wish the ending hadn't been handled so briefly. I took a lot of notes and I had a few other issues, but I'll save it for book club. 4y

Doing some rainy day reading at work, and I'm just so drawn into this book and so very sorry for anyone struggling with pain- with or without the aid of medicine. The pressures we put on ourselves can be insane.

alisiakae My hubby is a surgeon and convinced one local hospital system to allow the use of Exparel (it is expensive), a non-opiate numbing painkiller that lasts for a few days post-op. I had it for my surgery, and the difference this time vs my last surgery is amazing. It‘s just starting to wear off now, and I have not needed the opiate prescription at all. Research shows it drastically reduces opiate use post-op. 4y
MidnightBookGirl @4thhouseontheleft That is awesome news! There definitely needs to be a better way to treat pain. 4y

Started this for YA book club, and I'm already on chapter 8. Taking notes for discussion puposes. The subject matter is hard to read about while still being completely readable.

kamoorephoto I‘ve been holding off reading it. Especially after ‘Girl In Pieces‘ and ‘How to Make Friends with The Dark.‘ I don‘t think I can handle this one quite yet, not right now!!! 4y
LibrarianRyan I keep hearing about it. And I have plans to read it but not current ones. Can‘t wait to see what you think. 4y
