A literary tour de force of a detective's ceaseless hunt for an elusive criminalLondon, 1885. Three years before the Whitechapel killings, London is a city of fog and darkness. A severed head is dredged from the Thames; ten miles away, a woman's body is discovered on Edgeware Road. The famed American detective William Pinkerton is summoned by Scotland Yard to investigate. The dead woman fits the description of a grifter Pinkerton had been pursuing for a long time--someone he believed would lead him to a man he has been hunting since his father's death. Edward Shade is an industrialist without a past, a fabled con, a thief of other men's futures--he seems a ghost, a man of smoke. The obsessive hunt for him that began in the last days of the Civil War becomes Pinkerton's inheritance. What follows is an epic journey of secrets, deceit, and betrayals. Above all, it is the story of the most unlikely of bonds: between Pinkerton, the greatest detective of his age, and Shade, the one criminal he cannot outwit.Steven Price's "By Gaslight" is a riveting, atmospheric portrait of a man on the brink. Moving from the diamond mines of South Africa to the fog-enshrouded streets of Victorian London, the novel is a journey into a cityscape of grief, trust, and its breaking, where what we share can bind us even against our better selves.

Still on my TBR shelves, I'm sure there is a #lantern or two in this historical novel set in Victorian London. #GratefulHarvest @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @Eggs

#bookhaul from the Book outlet scratch and dent sale! Im so excited about these books! Everything is in great condition and now begins the difficult decision on what to read first!? I've actually read Hidden Bodies but wanted a copy of my own.

Has anyone read any of these?

vkois88 I'm so disappointed... my button finger wasn't fast enough and everything in my cart sold out before I could purchase it 😭 I was especially disappointed about the children's books I had put in there for my daighter. I REALLY wanted the indestructible Jingle Bells book for her. That was her favorite song last year, and I love the indestructible books anyway. She's usually pretty good with books unless she gets too excited, but still. 6y
laundry_piles @vkois88 oh wow that's such a bummer! ☹️ Hopefully you can find them again! They have a sale on children's books happening now... An extra 30% off I think it was. 6y
vkois88 I saw that! I get paid Thursday 😊 6y
RadicalReader @laundry_piles you‘ll love cozying up with The Twin by C.J. Omolou and Hidden Bodies by Karen Kepnes. I couldn‘t put down the first novel and felt strongly the same about the second. You‘ll also immensely enjoy the tv series You that‘s airing now on tv 6y

This book is a long journey spanning from the Civil War to Victorian London. At first the no quotation marks really bothered me, but I got used to it quickly. I thought the writing was lovely. April seems to be my month for long books!

Day 4

A fog-enshrouded hunt through sewers, opium dens, drawing rooms, and seance halls ensues, creating the most unlikely of bonds: between Pinkerton, the great detective; and Foole, the one man who may hold the key to finding Edward Shade.

I thought I might take a break from gothic lit but one review compared the writing to Cormac McCarthy. I was not disappointed! Taking place in the sewers and seance parlors of sooty Victorian age London, but with a Pinkerton detective from the post Civil War American Wild West, the plot was sophisticated and the characters were complex. The art of the con and I never knew who was conning who. Don‘t let the size dissuade you, well worth the weight!

What an amazing journey I've been on with this one. This features two protagonists, one a famous detective, one an infamous grifter. Their lives are intertwined from Africa to India, the Civil War to the American West, until murder brings them face to face in late 19th century London. Yet this is not simply a tale of hero and villain, good versus evil; lines are blurred, justice is redefined, and this saga becomes a tale I highly recommend ...

I‘m enjoying this book ... I‘m on page 320 and pleased there are more than 400 pages to go! The writing is cinematic and gorgeous. He doesn‘t just use words to describe people, places and events; he uses words to plunk you right down in the middle of it all. This passage is about William Pinkerton after he was injured at Antietam during the Civil War and tells you everything you need to know about his feelings for his wife.

Heard mixed things about this one. Personally I loved it. A thick mystery with flashbacks and so much character depth and development. An amazingly detailed setting, which visually came alive for me. While I would have preferred the traditional quotation marks, still loved the dialogue and repartee between characters. I wanted a bit more mystery and overall twist for the ending, but that's just me being picky. Absolutely loved!

When I requested this book from NetGalley, I vaguely thought it would somehow be about Jack the Ripper. What I found was an intricate, unique but wordy story about William Pinkerton of the American Pinkerton Detectives and Swell Mob Prince Adam Fool. Pinkerton and Foole collide over the death of Charlotte Reckitt, one of them hunting her and one loving her. See https://wordpress.com/post/itsallaboutthebook.org/595 for a full review.

PurpleyPumpkin I really enjoyed this book. It was something I could really sink my teeth into which is a nice change every once in a while! Would like to read your long review but couldn't access. Liked your short review though!👍🏽 7y

I enjoyed very few of the 700 pages in this book. Certain sections would get interesting but then it would get wordy and boring and could no longer hold my interest. I did not feel invested in any of the characters. The most interesting mystery was a secondary story which they solved disappointingly quickly. By the end I felt that the author accomplished nothing and just rambled on for 700 pages.

DivineDiana Thanks for the warning! Most definitely not adding to TBR pile! 😬 7y

I #quit this book after reading 20 pages. I was unable to follow the plot. Most of my reading time was spent figuring out if that sentence is a dialogue or not (due to no quotation marks!) It was really #frustrating and I can't imagine reading over 700 pages having to figure that out. Maybe I will try #audiobook for this. #booksiquit #nopunctuation #disappointedread
