This brilliant novel with universal resonance tells the story of three people trying to survive in a city rife with the extreme fear of desperate times, and of the sorrowing cellist who plays undaunted in their midst. One day a shell lands in a bread line and kills twenty-two people as the cellist watches from a window in his flat. He vows to sit in the hollow where the mortar fell and play Albinonis Adagio once a day for each of the twenty-two victims. The Adagio had been re-created from a fragment after the only extant score was firebombed in the Dresden Music Library, but the fact that it had been rebuilt by a different composer into something new and worthwhile gives the cellist hope. Meanwhile, Kenan steels himself for his weekly walk through the dangerous streets to collect water for his family on the other side of town, and Dragan, a man Kenan doesnt know, tries to make his way towards the source of the free meal he knows is waiting. Both men are almost paralyzed with fear, uncertain when the next shot will land on the bridges or streets they must cross, unwilling to talk to their old friends of what life was once like before divisions were unleashed on their city. Then there is Arrow, the pseudonymous name of a gifted female sniper, who is asked to protect the cellist from a hidden shooter who is out to kill him as he plays his memorial to the victims. In this beautiful and unforgettable novel, Steven Galloway has taken an extraordinary, imaginative leap to create a story that speaks powerfully to the dignity and generosity of the human spirit under extraordinary duress. Movingly depicts daily life during the siege of Sarajevo through the perspective of different citizens of the city. Through each we see the small steps taken to preserve humanity and normalcy. I was brought to tears by the cellist‘s dedication and by the choices made by several characters. #featuresamusician #booked2019

This totally brought back all the news bulletins from the 90s to me.....another horrible, bleak period in recent history. An excellent read though, I really enjoyed it. Been on internet reminding myself of the facts on a significant memorial day 😪

I read this book for #booked2019. Because of the title, I thought it would work for the #featuresamusician prompt. Based on a true incident, a cellist decided to play Adagio in G Minor in the war torn street of Sarajevo after 22 people were killed by explosives. He played at the same time for 22 days. Powerful, sad and yet, a celebration of recognizing humanity in devastating times. Thank you @Cinfhen for the kind gift.

During the siege of Sarajevo one day at 4 pm mortar shells struck a group of people waiting for bread, 22 were killed and for the next 22 days Vedran Smailovic, cellist, played Albinoni's Adagio in G minor at the site to honor the dead. That's the true story that inspired this novel.
⬇️

mreads The first chapter is from the cellist POV, than the POV switches and we see the impact of the cellist acts as the POV rotates between a man who must risk his life everytime he goes to get water for his family, a elderly man who's wife and son managed to escape the war and a female sniper.

Mixed feelings. It's good but my appreciation was marred on learning that the real life cellist, Vedran Smailovic, was deeply upset when the book came out (and I guess he wasn't thrilled about the shirtless chap on the cover, either) and Galloway appears to have been less than considerate in response. Where does inspiration end and appropriation begin? Probably I *should* put such questions aside and judge the book on its own merits. I cannot.

GingerAntics If the person it‘s based off of finds it to be appropriation, I don‘t blame you. It‘s hard to put that aside. 13mo
Caroline2 Hmmm, I‘d have a problem with that too! 😠 13mo
Lindy I scrolled back to see what others have said about this book because Jenny mentioned it in a recent @ReadingEnvy podcast. Like you, @kathedron , I can‘t separate the work from what I know about the author‘s actions. He‘s currently suing the woman who accused him of sexual assault as well as many other women who spoke up in her support. https://www.vice.com/en_ca/article/a3mwg4/this-canadian-author-is-suing-his-sexu... 6mo
kathedron @Lindy Thanks for commenting. He comes across as an unpleasant piece of work, doesn't he? 6mo

I‘m ashamed of how little I knew about the horrific war that took place less than 25 years ago. The city of Sarajevo stood under siege from 1992-19996 under the most harrowing conditions. Author Steven Galloway beautifully paints with the words the absurdity of war and the sheer randomness of who survives. Based around a true event & figure, the Cellist of Sarajevo becomes a symbol of hope, despair and existence. A slim but impactful read.

batsy Nice review. Sad to say I know so little about it too. 1y

Libby1 I wept frequently while reading this book. It is one of my all time favourites. Strangely, the actual cellist later moved to Northern Ireland. I don‘t know if he‘s still here, but at one point he was living about an hour away from where I live. 1y

Cinfhen This book will definitely stay with me @Melissa_J @LeeRHarry @Libby1 I wonder if he‘s still preforming/playing?? 1y
Lindy @Cinfhen The cellist appears to still be performing and composing in Northern Ireland. His name is Vedran Smailović. 1y
Simona This is my part of the world and Bosnia is part of my former state, but I have to admit that I have read only one literary fiction book about the war in Yugoslavia and I was really, really upset ... I‘m deliberately avoiding books which are about this war ... 1y

I loved this book and was halfway thru until I spoke to a colleague at the office who was originally from Sarajevo. When I mentioned I was reading this book, his face fell. Not only did he know the musician this book was based off of, he is a Bosnian Serb, and fought (with guns) to get his family out of Sarajevo during that time. In a nutshell, he told me the book was very one sided, and not to believe everything you read in the news. Wow!

Gezemice Wow! 1y
DivineDiana How true! 1y
Lindy There has been controversy about Galloway‘s use of the cellist character: https://www.google.ca/amp/s/amp.theaustralian.com.au/arts/out-of-the-war-into-a-... and more recent controversy about Galloway as a harasser: https://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/british-columbia/ubc-and-the-steven-gallowa... 1y
BooksAndChopsticks It was truly incredible to hear my colleague's view on the whole situation. He was shot twice while in the army. He's now living a peaceful life in Canada as a graphic designer with his family. He went on to mention the news anchors (like Amanpour) reporting from Croatia thinking "you have no idea what it's like here, lady!". As one of my favorite people, this man is one of the gentlest, kindest person I know. 1y

Day 7 - Book and Music: War. Death. Survival. Words tell of the harrowing experiences in a city under siege with mortar shells dropping every few feet and bullets whistling through the air. In the midst of this for 22 days a cellist sits among the debris of a destroyed city and plays his instrument for all the world to hear. He plays with all his heart and each note is a tear drop to stain and burn a memory into history. Recommended! #MarchInBooks

It's seems impossible to pen a review of this poignant, powerful book. As one character mentioned, I never lived through war, I have no idea what is like. Inspired by the actions of cellist Vedran Smailović, Galloway creates a world of fiction based on real events, I was transported to Sarajevo, into the lives of four individuals, living in their once beautiful city plagued by the tragedy of war.

Heartbreaking... Galloway's story spans several viewpoints of those who suffered in one of the longest sieges of a city. The stalemate between two warring factions locked Sarajevo and its inhabitants into a 12 year bloodbath. The horrors of war destroy identities, only if we allow them. #mynameis...
