The Night Tiger
The Night Tiger: A Novel | Yangsze Choo
A sweeping historical novel about a dancehall girl and an orphan boy whose fates entangle over an old Chinese superstition about men who turn into tigers. When 11-year-old Ren’s master dies, he makes one last request of his Chinese houseboy: that Ren find his severed finger, lost years ago in an accident, and reunite it with his body. Ren has 49 days, or else his master’s soul will roam the earth, unable to rest in peace. Ji Lin always wanted to be a doctor, but as a girl in 1930s Malaysia, apprentice dressmaker is a more suitable occupation. Secretly, though, Ji Lin also moonlights as a dancehall girl to help pay off her beloved mother’s Mahjong debts. One night, Ji Lin’s dance partner leaves her with a gruesome souvenir: a severed finger. Convinced the finger is bad luck, Ji Lin enlists the help of her erstwhile stepbrother to return it to its rightful owner. As the 49 days tick down, and a prowling tiger wreaks havoc on the town, Ji Lin and Ren’s lives intertwine in ways they could never have imagined. Propulsive and lushly written, The Night Tiger explores colonialism and independence, ancient superstition and modern ambition, sibling rivalry and first love. Braided through with Chinese folklore and a tantalizing mystery, this novel is a page-turner of the highest order.

And on my drives to and from the trailhead, I finally finished this book on Audible. I don‘t usually like books with a fantasy/supernatural component but I loved this one. I feel like it would make an amazing movie.

It's a good story premise peppered with severed fingers, romance, superstition, gambling debts, weretigers & colonial cocktail parties. There's a heavy dose of dream sequences and a touch of magical realism as well as a murder mystery central to the plot. But it's the scope of the novel that for me is its achilles heel - there's lots going on and the author uses a few to many coincidences to get a rather convoluted plot move along.

marleed I liked it but didn‘t love it either. I think maybe it was bad timing for me because I read so many positive reviews and get how they feel. 1d
Soubhiville I love your description: severed fingers being a mentionable plot point 🤣. I‘m seeing quite a few mixed reviews about this one. Hope you had fun with the buddyread discussions! 1d

Mitch @Soubhiville It was one of those books that is good enough to make you care that it wasn‘t better! A little more mystery and a little less ‘tell‘ with a lot more ‘show‘ and it would have been a pick! 1d
Mitch @Soubhiville as always though - the book experience was enhance x1000%by the buddy read! 🏆 1d
Soubhiville Ok, bizarre coincidence: the book I‘m reading today has severed fingers too! What‘re the chances of that happening?! Lol. 1d

Night Tiger combines magical realism, historical fiction, and mystery genres. I loved the 1930s Malaysia setting and the folklore (weretigers-- hello!). Plot needed tweaks but kept my interest.

Sharing and discussing this book with #BOTMbuddyread Littens made it all the better.😘

Let me start off by saying that this book is totally up my alley. I love magical realism, ancient myths/curses, & pretty much anything where the setting is in Southeast Asia. The story takes place in the 1930s which adds a bit of a historical fiction aspect to it, as well. There was very little chance that I could wasn't going to love it. I really enjoyed the unraveling of events and the intersection of the two main storylines. Highly enjoyable!

BooknerdsLife Lovely review 🙌🏼💙 I‘m planning to buddy read this next month! Can‘t wait ☺️ 1d

I really enjoyed The Night Tiger. I loved that it was set in 1930's Malaysia. That's a period and place that I know very little about, which really helped draw me into the story.
I can't waite to discuss it with #BotmBuddyRead 🐯

1930's Colonial Malaysia. Age-old superstitions, modern idealism, sibling rivalry, forbidden love. 11 yo, Ren must find his master‘s severed finger and bury it with him. Ji Lin acquires the finger unexpectedly. How the finger finally gets to the grave is one of the plots in this complicated story. Suspend my beliefs. The characters were well-developed and the plot was suspenseful. Would recommend this novel to those who love mystical realism.

#botmbuddyread This book kept my interest and might have been a pick - but the last quarter of the book ruined it for me. There are some issues with the ending that I‘ll put in a spoiler tag below, but it was disappointing to have such a weak ending after what had been a pretty strong story. I liked the setting and most of the characters as well as the mythology. Though I had issues with the ending, it was still a solid 3⭐️.

Redwritinghood I didn‘t like the relationship between Ji Lin and Shin. It was a little creepy to me. Also, I didn‘t like who the killer turned out to be and how everything ended so tidily. 6d

I should start off by saying I really appreciate a good historical fiction with likeable characters, especially if there's a mystery element. I also particularly enjoy magic realism, as well as cultural elements in a story. This book checked all of those boxes. It kept my interest and kept me guessing. The only thing I didn't like was the unnecessary romance, which made the ending not as perfect as I was hoping. Read for #BOTMbuddyread

Started with a bang, finished in a fizzle and somewhere abouts the middle, you find yourself thinking, “well, this is all quite ridiculous!”
