The Night Tiger
The Night Tiger: A Novel | Yangsze Choo
A sweeping historical novel about a dancehall girl and an orphan boy whose fates entangle over an old Chinese superstition about men who turn into tigers. When 11-year-old Rens master dies, he makes one last request of his Chinese houseboy: that Ren find his severed finger, lost years ago in an accident, and reunite it with his body. Ren has 49 days, or else his masters soul will roam the earth, unable to rest in peace. Ji Lin always wanted to be a doctor, but as a girl in 1930s Malaysia, apprentice dressmaker is a more suitable occupation. Secretly, though, Ji Lin also moonlights as a dancehall girl to help pay off her beloved mothers Mahjong debts. One night, Ji Lins dance partner leaves her with a gruesome souvenir: a severed finger. Convinced the finger is bad luck, Ji Lin enlists the help of her erstwhile stepbrother to return it to its rightful owner. As the 49 days tick down, and a prowling tiger wreaks havoc on the town, Ji Lin and Rens lives intertwine in ways they could never have imagined. Propulsive and lushly written, The Night Tiger explores colonialism and independence, ancient superstition and modern ambition, sibling rivalry and first love. Braided through with Chinese folklore and a tantalizing mystery, this novel is a page-turner of the highest order.

No run today, but I did a pre-dawn body sculpt class at the YMCA and I'm gonna be soooo sore. 😂 Now I'm enjoying the sunrise, eating breakfast, and listening to an audiobook while I recover for a bit. 😂💪 Determined to finish this book this week! #BFC #BFCr4 #RunningonReading YMCA workouts aren't technically part of my challenge goals, but I'm loosely working towards 2-3 visits a week. @BarbaraJean @Catlover23 @hermyknee

BarbaraJean A pre-dawn YMCA class—that‘s hard core in my book! 😂 I made progress in my audiobook while making dinner tonight—to make up for the gym workout where I left my headphones at home. 😔 20h

Literally ran as slow as I could without walking, and ran a shorter distance than usual, and my knee felt fine!! 🎉 The race on Saturday helped me realize that a) I can get back to running and b) I need to take it painfully easy as I get back to it. This is a good start. 👍🏃‍♀️ Also I didn't finish this audiobook last time I checked it out, and it finally came back in! #audiorun #BFCr4 #BFC #RunningonReading @BarbaraJean @Catlover23 @hermyknee

hermyknee Awesome! I have this one on audio, too, and I‘ve never finished it! 2d
Caterina @hermyknee It's been slow going for me 😂 I didn't finish it last time because I was hating the romance so much, and now that I've had a 6 week break from it I think I can finish it! Disappointed though, The Ghost Bride was more enjoyable for me. 2d

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I randomly picked it up at the library based on the cover, and didn't know what too expect.

The cultural folklore and history were fascinating to me and by far my favorite part of the whole story. The romance felt a little forced, but it worked within the plot. There's also a bit of mystery as well to keep you turning pages to connect all the dots.

Although I didn't love it, it's still a pick. 😁

so glad i tried this despite some hesitation. (i‘d been disappointed by The Ghost Bride.)
the last scene was a delight and so satisfying. i mean, there are some bumps, for sure—mainly with characterization—but im happy with the overall experience. the historical details are great. i do think the commentary on colonials could‘ve been sharper, but 🤷🏻‍♀️ there‘s no such thing as a perfect book. 🌟

When your book review says more about you than it does about the book. Oh, Sherry. 🙄

Not every reader has to like every book, of course, but maybe make an attempt to hide your racism and intolerance of different experiences? I'm not a huge fan of fantasy either, but Sherry definitely convinced me to buy this book. I hope I like it just to spite her review. 😂

Forced myself to return to this #audiobook today. The romance has been driving me crazy for the last few hours, and I still have over 6 hours left and don't know if I can take it. 😬

Hurt my right knee and hip while running today on a weird steeply sloped bit of the Ohlone Greenway at a road crossing. Sitting with ice and my breakfast now, hoping I feel good enough to head into SF today!

Decided to run a little faster than my usual, comfortable pace of 12:00-12:30 min/mi today. It was fun to push myself, although I still love my easy runs too. Just found out that one of my seminary intensives clashes with the Pride Run that my seminary encouraged me to sign up for 2 months ago, so that 5K race is off my #BFC now. 😣 Very disappointed since I'd been looking forward to it. #audiorun #BookFitnessChallenge #BFCr3 #bookdragons

Caterina @wanderinglynn @Hestapleton So my goals now don't include a race because I can't do that one and haven't found another one I can afford to sign up for. Also got 3/4 runs in this week, but that was on purpose to give myself time to rest and recover from traveling and moving! 👍 2mo

The romance: first off, it's kinda incestuous. While they may not be BIOLOGICALLY siblings, they are raised from a relatively young age as such. It's just cringe. Then it ramps up in the last 1/4: dude pressures for sex, ignores her protests, use of the "I was with all those girls to get you out of my mind," female feeling GUILTY that she didn't want to have sex & inner monologued "oh no! what if he doesn't think I love him anymore"

One_With_Books Sounds like a horrible story! Breaks my heart someone wrote about such terrible things 2mo
SassenachTheBookWizard @One_With_Books yeah kinda ruins everything else when the girls happily ever after is with an emotionally manipulative step brother 2mo

If you like mysteries about fingers, then this is for you.

I felt the book had a lot of promise with all the culture and mythology, however the story and characters became a little "meh" for me.

2/5⭐ The 1st half was structured w/ magical tiger tension & the 5 virtues, but both fizzled into a weird mystery that dominated the 2nd half. The plotting & themes set up at the beginning became scattered.

I didn't like Ji Lin's constant presentation as “not like the other girls.“ Shin turned into a horrible, demanding, possessive, assuming, entitled flat character. My issues boiled down to all the characters being weak & nondimensional.

Slow start for me, but once it picked up I couldn‘t put it down. I loved the Malay superstitions and folklore and wanted more explanation or depth to the connection the characters had to one another. I didn‘t mind the romance but I could‘ve done without it if it meant more magic realism.

I finished my first book of #24B4Monday at 11:36:35:09. The audio version of this was a lot of fun. The story was something slightly out of the ordinary for me, but I do tend to enjoy magical realism when I pick it up. #hellosunshine #malaysia #readingaroundtheworld #ghost Page turner about a young dressmaker, her stepbrother and a young houseboy set in 1930‘s colonial Malaya. The Malaysia superstition about a tiger who walks in a man‘s skin mixed with Chinese numerology and belief in ghosts sets the stage for a nice little thriller complete with a shared dream environment. Didn‘t care for the love story component but gobbled up the ghost story.

It's a good story premise peppered with severed fingers, romance, superstition, gambling debts, weretigers & colonial cocktail parties. There's a heavy dose of dream sequences and a touch of magical realism as well as a murder mystery central to the plot. But it's the scope of the novel that for me is its achilles heel - there's lots going on and the author uses a few to many coincidences to get a rather convoluted plot move along.
