The Secret Life of Violet Grant
The Secret Life of Violet Grant | Beatriz Williams
116 posts | 98 read | 1 reading | 100 to read
Williams conjures up another substantive beach read steeped in history and familial intrigue.... Readers will love wallowing in the twists and turns of this irresistibly luxurious tale. Booklist Passion, redemption, and a battered suitcase full of secrets: the New York Times-bestselling author of A Hundred Summers returns with another engrossing tale. Manhattan, 1964. Vivian Schuyler, newly graduated from Bryn Mawr College, has recently defied the privilege of her storied old Fifth Avenue family to do the unthinkable for a budding Kennedy-era socialite: break into the Madison Avenue world of razor-stylish Metropolitan magazine. But when she receives a bulky overseas parcel in the mail, the unexpected contents draw her inexorably back into her familys past, and the hushed-over crime passionnel of an aunt she never knew, whose existence has been wiped from the record of history. Berlin, 1914. Violet Schuyler Grant endures her marriage to the philandering and decades-older scientist Dr. Walter Grant for one reason: for all his faults, he provides the necessary support to her liminal position as a young American female physicist in prewar Germany. The arrival of Dr. Grants magnetic former student at the beginning of Europes fateful summer interrupts this delicate dtente. Lionel Richardson, a captain in the British Army, challenges Violet to escape her husbands perverse hold, and as the world edges into war and Lionels shocking true motives become evident, Violet is tempted to take the ultimate step to set herself free and seek a life of her own conviction with a man whose cause is as audacious as her own. As the iridescent and fractured Vivian digs deeper into her aunts past and the mystery of her ultimate fate, Violets story of determination and desire unfolds, shedding light on the darkness of her years abroad . . . and teaching Vivian to reach forward with grace for the ambitious futureand the loveshe wants most.

Vivian has one of my most favorite narrative voices, and I must admit, I didn't see the final twist with Violet's story coming! Kind of wish we had gotten more of the resolution with Doctor Paul, but at least it all worked out for them. #historicalfiction

This was a great book to listen to. We have dual storylines set in 1914 and 1964. Vivian in 1964 is trying to find out what happened to her great aunt Violet, a brilliant scientist who was accused of murdering her fellow scientist husband and falling off the face of the earth in 1914. I especially loved Vivian‘s part and I think the #audiobook is the way to go. 4⭐️

Today‘s Prompt: SELF

Violet was a SELF-made woman that knew what she wanted, but she also was a bit submissive as women were in the early 1900's.

A truly delightful, witty read. The ending held a secret and surprise of its own.

♥️♥️ This is a FAVORITE. ♥️♥️

6-6-21: My 60th finished book of 2021! Manhattan 1964. Vivian Schuyler works for Metropolitan Magazine. After receiving an unexpected package in the mail, she believes she has the beginnings of a great story. Berlin 1914. Violet Schuyler, a scientist, is trying to make a name for herself in a male dominated field. How will Violet and Vivian‘s stories sync up? This was a fun read! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 💖📖#️⃣6️⃣0️⃣

Vivian Schuyler receives a mysterious package one fall day in 1964. It turns out to be the lost suitcase of an aunt she didn‘t know existed-who was last seen in Germany in 1914. I loved this-the characters, the settings, both timelines.

What a great read! This story speeds along, and it pulled me with it. The characters were interesting, the plot unique, I thought. A dual timeline, alternating between 1914 and 1964. I figured out the plot twist at the end, but it didn‘t affect my enjoyment of the story. Thanks again, Misty😘

I loved this book! Definitely a favorite of 2020. The dual perspective and timeline was perfectly done as Vivian (1964) researches the scandalous history of her Great Aunt Violet when Vivian is mysteriously forwarded Violet's suitcase from Germany in 1914. Vivian is spunky with the best quips, and any woman would love to have her flirtatious confidence. Violet is also a feminist for the ages as a female scientist at the top of her class. 5 stars!

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Love!!! Make sure to read the other ones in this series 💕💕 4y

Creepy grooming men are just gross, but thinking of them in 1914 is even worse since women had limited options to fight abusive men. Also, the split timeline so often written into HF is much more fun when the MC of the timeline researching back is as spunky Vivian Schuler.

#TBRtemptation post 4! First in a (so-far trilogy) series. Manhattan, 1964. Recent Bryn Mawr grad Vivian Schuyler bucks Fifth Ave tradition entering the Mad Men world of Metropolitan Magazine. A parcel arrives whose contents concern family history & an aunt wiped from records.

Berlin, 1914. Violet Schuyler Grant endures her rocky marriage to a scientist so as to be a physicist. A British captain offers something else.

A fun novel with two time eras, filled with a touch of suspense and a lot of romance. This was my first novel exclusively by Williams (I read her collaborative work The Glass Ocean earlier), & I am now a fan of her work. Vivian Schuyler is vivacious, sarcastic, and a tad nosy; Violet Grant is intelligent and a woman ahead of her time. Can‘t wait to read more by Williams!

Third day start time for #24B42019 . Making progress in my pile of books. I also realized I probably will not finish War and Peace by tomorrow - even at warp speed listening, there is way too much left, and at 1.75x, the excited Russian characters sound really cartoonish! But, I‘m glad I switched to audio for the first time reading it. I can go back and savor so much later with a strict book read.

This juicy, dishy book was right up my alley. There's something for everyone here with two time periods (1914 & 1964), major secrets, family history, romance, betrayal, danger, murder, a lady scientist, and a whole lot else to make this an addictive, hard-to-put-down story. This is my first of her historical women's fiction, and I'm kicking myself for having waited so long to finally read her. I can't wait to read the rest of her books!
