A Blade So Black
A Blade So Black | L.L. McKinney
A Blade So Black delivers an irresistible urban fantasy retelling of Alice in Wonderland . . . but it's not the Wonderland you remember. The first time the Nightmares came, it nearly cost Alice her life. Now she's trained to battle monstrous creatures in the dark dream realm known as Wonderland with magic weapons and hardcore fighting skills. Yet even warriors have a curfew. Life in real-world Atlanta isn't always so simple, as Alice juggles an overprotective mom, a high-maintenance best friend, and a slipping GPA. Keeping the Nightmares at bay is turning into a full-time job. But when Alice's handsome and mysterious mentor is poisoned, she has to find the antidote by venturing deeper into Wonderland than she’s ever gone before. And she'll need to use everything she's learned in both worlds to keep from losing her head . . . literally. Debut author L.L. McKinney delivers an action-packed twist on an old classic, full of romance and otherworldly intrigue. An Imprint Book

All over campus lay the remains of so many graduation photos, evidence of good dreams pursued & achieved. Also, a mess for someone else, I guess.

All my holds came in an avalanche. I wasn‘t in the mood for an Alice story, but McKinney managed to cast a spell on me.

I was excited for this retelling of Alice in Wonderland with a black girl as Alice, but it didn't live up to what it could've been. The prologue was fun! I loved the Sailor Moon reference, but as I continue to read, they kept popping up and I became annoyed. I couldn't tell if this was written for today's teens or for the millenniums. Wonderland was lackluster; not enough description. Which was really disappointing BECAUSE ITS WONDERLAND
#books

ShyBookOwl I know!!! I felt soooo let down. She relied way too much on references, didn't describe the settings very well... It seemed like she had a really big idea but zero execution planned. 2mo
essence_dionne @ShyBookOwl when her friend mentioned her being Buffy, I was almost done with this book, lol! I have so many issues with this, but unfortunately we don't get that much space.. Poor Chess, he wasnt devoloped well.. the author did all those Sailor Moon references and didn't focus on the cutest one. When Chess dressed as Tuxedo Mask for the party 2mo
ShyBookOwl @essence_dionne Haha so true. The first direct Buffy reference threw me but the one that nearly killed it for me was describing the twins as teenage Spikes from Buffy... really? Just describe them, please! I was mad lol 2mo

essence_dionne @ShyBookOwl Yesssss! So annoying... Like what teen today knows who they are...😂 I mean, I'm sure they're a few, but not a lot. L.L. wrote this book for herself lol. You what else gave me a what? Finding out her best friend Courtney was white at the VERY END OF THE BOOK. Which isn't an issue ,but when they were talking about makeup at the beginning, I thought Courtney was light skinned lol 2mo
ShyBookOwl @essence_dionne LOL she did write it for herself. I saw her in an interview and I think she said she was rejected over 200x... when I read it I thought... yeah, i think I know qhy 2mo
essence_dionne @ShyBookOwl I just looked up that interview, and she from my hometown... GOODNESS ! SMH. lol 2mo

Not for me!
I really wanted it to be great, but it wasn't. The pacing was way off, the characters were two-dimensional, and I had trouble seeing this version of Wonderland in my head. McKinney also pushed her Buffy re-imagined agenda way too hard. I'll stick to the TV show, comic book continuation, and comic book reboot.

OMG! Where is the next one? This first book in a most imaginative retelling of Alice in Wonderland blew me away. So much fun! No spoilers, but the Alice here is a modern teenager with her own set of problems when she's drafted to protect the world from Nightmares. Adventures galore from then on. Love!

This was my choice for the retelling of a classic prompt for #popsugarchallenge - it‘s a mash-up of Alice in Wonderland and Buffy the Vampire Slayer with a kickass black heroine. I was a little annoyed that NONE of the storylines had much resolution here, but in was still on 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

What an amazing book to start off the year with. It was exciting, adventorous and dramatic. The character development of Alice going from someone with self doubt and still dealing with the loss of her father to a heroine who would do anything to protect the people she loves and cares about is inspiring. This is an epic twist to the classic Alice and Wonderland story and I can't wait for Book 2 in the series.

Oh I wanted to like this book so much more than I did 😭 The beginning was so filled with exposition and world building in the most awkward way. It didn‘t get really good until around page 250. And I got tired of Alice‘s mom and her getting in trouble. I didn‘t really connect to any of the characters even Alice. I loved the concept but the execution just wasn‘t there for me. I did like Wonderland but it wasn‘t fully fleshed out.

kyraleseberg I'm really looking forward to the sequel because this story has a lot of potential! 6mo
