When the Lights Go Out
When the Lights Go Out | Mary Kubica
A woman is plunged into a bizarre case of stolen identity in this ambitious and riveting thriller by the blockbuster bestselling author of The Good Girl, Mary Kubica Jessie Sloane is on the path to rebuilding her life after years of caring for her ailing mother. She rents a new apartment and applies for college. But when the college informs her that her social security number has raised a red flag, Jessie discovers a shocking detail that forces her to question everything shes ever known. Finding herself suddenly at the center of a bizarre mystery, Jessie tumbles down a rabbit hole, which is only exacerbated by a relentless lack of sleep. As days pass and the insomnia worsens, it plays with Jessies mind. Her judgment is blurred, her thoughts hampered by fatigue. Jessie begins to see things until she can no longer tell the difference between whats real and what shes only imagined. Meanwhile, twenty years earlier and two hundred and fifty miles away, another womans split-second decision may hold the key to Jessies secret past. Is Jessie really who she thinks she is? Has her whole life been a lie? The truth will shock her to her coreif she lives long enough to discover it.

I wasn't really a fan of this book. From the beginning I was waiting for more to happen and to feel some sort of connection or sympathy towards the characters, but I felt none. The ending felt like the biggest cop-out, and because of how it ended and the nature of having an unreliable narrator, I know nothing more about these characters than I did on page one. Personally, I thought reading this was a waste of time.

collegecatlady I‘ve felt this way about the two books of hers I‘ve read too! 6mo
Kaylamburson Such a bummer! All the concepts sound so good. I probably won't try another as I've heard similar things a out all her books. @collegecatlady 6mo
MicheleinPhilly I‘ve read 2 of her books and was disappointed in both. I think she‘s just not a good match for me. 6mo

Kaylamburson Yeah, I'm feeling the same thing. I felt the same with Ruth Ware's books. I felt no empathy for either author's characters. @MicheleinPhilly 6mo
MicheleinPhilly HA! I gave up on Ware after 2 books too. 👯‍♀️ 6mo

Ms. Kubica's books are always good reads.

Which have you read?

I have read two:

Both are reviewed on my blog.

Another ok book from Mary Kubica— I think it‘s safe to say I don‘t need to pick up another. I‘m most disappointed with this one though because of how excited I was to pick up a story with an unreliable narrator who is such from sleep deprivation, not from drugs/alcohol/sociopathy. The ending wasn‘t a total shock, nor did it feel like a cop out, but overall it didn‘t seem like Kubica pushed the possibilities of either woman‘s storyline far enough.

I didn‘t like it. I have problems with the storyline, it made me angry, and I don‘t recommend it. I can‘t say more than that unless I put spoilers; I‘m sorry!

This book is a bit difficult for me to review. It starts off slow, with nothing but the tiniest of hooks to keep you reading, then gets EXTREMELY good in the middle, but the end is just not what I expected at all. It totally veered off course for me and in my opinion, would have been better if the author had gone down the path it seemed to go down in the middle of the book.
That being said, I give this book a 3/5 and will read more of her books!

I thought I knew what was going to happen from the start. The story was more complicated than I first thought. I found it frustrating and didn't bond with any of the characters. I'm going to leave Mary Kubica's work alone for a while.

This one * took me a while to get into * had so many twists it was hard for me to follow at times or guess what would happen next * skipped around a lot * ended abruptly * left me with questions * confused me at times * made me want to figure out the background of the story * was not as good as others by the author

RadicalReader @kstadt929 looking forward to this novel myself sounds wonderful from the description 13mo

This was a pick all the way up to the last twist, & there were hints to the last twist so it wasn‘t completely unexpected but I was hoping it wouldn‘t go that way. It just felt disappointing...but up to that point I was loving it & getting into it. Then it twisted, landed with a thud & fell flat. However, the writing was great & I‘m sure many will enjoy the twist, just didn‘t work for me. I do look forward to reading more of Kubica‘s work though.

Well that was not what I was expecting for an ending. It was a quick read that definitely kept my interest. Insomnia....losing a mother.... Losing your own identity... It was filled with twists and turns.. I'm going to be thinking about that ending for awhile....

Mary Kubica never disappoints. Her latest mystery, When the Lights Go Out, is an inventive and moving exploration of two women's psyches and motivations. Is Jessie who she has been raised to believe she is? Will she live long enough to uncover the truth about her past? ⭐⭐⭐⭐

This one was a quick read. But I was left feeling like “what? That was it?” I will say that reading a book about a character who hasn‘t sleep in days while your roof is being replaced - I started to feel like I was having memory issues. Not one of my favourites.

For most of this book I was willing Jessie to just go to sleep already! Her insistence that sleep eluded her annoyed me no end, but as the story unfolded, secrets were revealed and it all began to make sense. The final twist surprised me but left me with an unsatisfactory feeling of being slightly let down. All in all I did enjoy it but it‘s not likely one that I will read again. #NetGalley

Fast read. Slightly predictable, but some surprises, and a even what may have been a red herring. I was able to figure out most of the twists, but not all, till the end. Still, it was enjoyable and fast paced. First time I've read this author, and now I want to read more.

Cpg I‘m reading this now- I do like her other books as well- The Good Girl was first of hers I read. 13mo

3.5 ☆ I adore Mary Kubica and have always, ALWAYS enjoyed her books. She never disappoints which makes this even harder for me to say I‘m really torn on this book. As a die hard Mary fan this wasn‘t my favorite. I encourage you to give it a try you may have a different experience than I. As always I‘m already anticipating her next novel. 🤟🏻

1. Cats. That's my life, a series of cat photos. These are the brothers, Jack and Simon.
2. Last "concert" would have been to see a local band several years ago. Not quite a concert.
3. Chewing nails and skin around nails, always having my hands near my mouth
4. last year's season of Supernatural, and new season of Iron Fist
5. Finishing up The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet, then most likely When the Lights Go Out
