What‘s better than a snowy Sunday morning of breakfast in bed, snuggling my dog & devouring this book?

In a Holidaze | Christina Lauren
Pickpick

This book was super fun and light hearted. Not the type I typically read but a welcomed break! It was a little racier than a Hallmark movie, but generally the same plot line.

I read this book in almost one sitting. It is so twisted & dark that it just drags you in. The moment you think you understand the sisters, you‘re caught by surprise. So entertaining & a mindless read that will leave you thinking!

The Nickel Boys: A Novel | Colson Whitehead
Pickpick

A young Black boy is charged for a crime he was unaware of committing & sent to a reform school, where he & all the boys are horribly abused. I had times when I could hardly keep reading - knowing this was a real place & only one of many that existed. “He'd started his day in his old life and ended it here” reminds me all too much of today‘s events. A must read to open your eyes even more to injustice so deeply rooted in our nation‘s history.

This book took me a while to get into, and a lot of convincing myself to keep reading. Once I got into it, it was good! It‘s a tale about a girl who made a deal with the devil and lives for 300 years, only no one can remember her for more than a first introduction. Lots of sadness and then hope through a love story. It‘ll make you think and realize how quickly time passes & how we all just want to leave our mark on this earth.

Having a mother who is a hoarder myself, I found this book to be very relatable. You are drawn into the family‘s story and I found it to be quite interesting. As most families have dark histories, you find out bit by bit what transpired over the years. Overall, a good read!

The Hideaway | Lauren Denton
Mehso-so

This book reminded me of a Hallmark movie. Definitely not my typical read, but yet I kept wanting to keep going rather than put it down. It‘s a tale of a secret love & a life that could‘ve been. I loved the setting of the hideaway, which is whimsical & makes you want to be there.

We need you. We need the wounded, we need the limping, we need the hurting, we need the broken and messy— you are us. We need to cup your tears, to water hard and crushed places, or there‘s no growth in the kingdom of God. We need your raw story or we lose any hope of the redemptive Story. We need to hold your broken heart or we have no heart. ... It is the broken ones who put us back together again.

I was actually on the edge of my seat here & very interested in what happened at this hen party. The characters felt real, the plot felt close & it was a page turner for sure. Slightly predictable ending, but nonetheless a good read.

Lilac Girls: A Novel | Martha Hall Kelly
Pickpick

This book took me a while to get into, but once I did, I found myself so engulfed in the characters‘ lives and stories that I wanted to know more & more. It was a difficult read at times because of the painful reality the women faced in the concentration camp, but beautiful told. It portrayed the woman as strong & brave, as they had no choice but to endure such harsh circumstances for years. I especially appreciated the photos in the end.

Despite everyone‘s love of this book and the fact that it was such an easy read, I didn‘t really get into Rachel Hollis‘ tone. I didn‘t finish it.

marleed I set up a Goodreads account a couple years back when the first of her 2 books came out. I gave it 3 stars because I wasn‘t the right audience for it. I didn‘t write a review because I was brand new to Goodreads. I received a message from her account calling me a dweeb for not getting the message. I was so embarrassed that I edited to 4 stars and deleted the message. ...Geez, I wish I had kept the message and responded to it! 1y
ke1lbe1l Can‘t believe she said that to you @marleed !! I also couldn‘t get into it... given all the hype out there, I‘m glad to see it wasn‘t just me @nicoleyosick 1y

Sharp Objects: A Novel | Gillian Flynn

One of the best thrillers I‘ve read. I loved Gillian Flynn‘s writing style and really felt the eeriness of the small town where the murder investigation occurs. Bonus, you can watch the amazing HBO series after.

The Silent Patient | Alex Michaelides
Pickpick

This book constantly had me in suspense, hooked all the way through. The chapters are short, always making you long to read just a bit more. Throughout the whole book, the psychotherapist must try to get Alicia, the silent patient to speak, and when she does the ending is nothing I ever expected.

Wow, this book draws you in to their little town life, and really has a lot of layers to it. It touches a lot on racism and inequities in America from life experiences many of us can relate to. I was rather disappointed in the ending but probably just because it was more realistic than idealistic as I‘d hoped.

I almost felt wrong reading this book. I was drawn in, couldn‘t put it down, but could hardly stand reading about this twisted marriage. It was a serious page turner & also the creepiest book ever!
