City of Ghosts
City of Ghosts | Victoria Schwab
Cassidy Blake's parents are The Inspectres, a (somewhat inept) ghost-hunting team. But Cass herself can REALLY see ghosts. In fact, her best friend, Jacob, just happens to be one. When The Inspectres head to ultra-haunted Edinburgh, Scotland, for their new TV show, Cass -- and Jacob -- come along. In Scotland, Cass is surrounded by ghosts, not all of them friendly. Then she meets Lara, a girl who can also see the dead. But Lara tells Cassidy that as an In-betweener, their job is to send ghosts permanently beyond the Veil. Cass isn't sure about her new mission, but she does know the sinister Red Raven haunting the city doesn't belong in her world. Cassidy's powers will draw her into an epic fight that stretches through the worlds of the living and the dead, in order to save herself.

This book was so cute! I loved following Cassidy and Jacob as they explored Edinburgh and made new friends. V did an amazing job bring the history of Edinburgh to life and had just the right amount of pop culture references. It‘s a quick read and prefect for all ages! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Why oh why did I decide to read this book AFTER #bookcon, & totally miss my chance to get an ARC for the sequel? This book is just filled with everything I love. Ghosts. History. Folklore. Also, so well written! Great MC & supporting characters. Also, a ghost BFF, a cat, & Harry Potter references ♥️ Read it in about 2h30, so a fun & breezy read.

I'm a scaredy-cat & wary of ghost stories. No need to worry. This was a bit creepy, but also a lot of fun. It read like a love letter to traveling in general & Edinburgh in specific, which was charming. Character-wise, I liked Cass, and I totally got Cass's parents, who were a delight. I would have liked a little bit more about Jacob his backstory, but his friendship with Cass was just perfect.

This one was fun, but it probably won't stick with me. I really enjoyed the Scottish setting from an outsider perspective. I visited once 3 years ago, so it was kind of nostalgic. I also really liked that the story was about friendship, rather than romance, especially in a YA novel. Nothing about it really struck me as unique or thought-provoking, but it passed the time nicely while I worked. I liked it, but I didnt fall in 📚❤.

This was a great audiobook. I'm a big fan of Schwab's writing, and although this is not my favorite by her, it is still an enjoyable book. It's an interesting ghost story about a girl who can travel between the world of the living and the spirit world. Bonus: there's a kitty named Grim too.

The second in this series is Tunnel of Bones, which I will definitely have to read to see what adventures await for Cassidy.

ShyBookOwl I love that kitty name too 😻 on chapter 13 🎧📚❤ 2mo
Addison_Reads @ShyBookowl I'm excited to see what you think once you finish. 😀 2mo
ShyBookOwl @Addison_Reads Done! I liked it a lot but I didn't love it, so i gave it a so-so. It was perfect to listen to while I did other things, but nothing about it really moved me 🤷🏽‍♀️ I did think the friendship was nice and refreshing in a YA. I'd actually like to read a book about the Raven woman 😏 2mo
Addison_Reads @ShyBookOwl I can understand that. Had I tried to read this instead of doing the audiobook version, I'm not sure I would have enjoyed it as much. The Raven Woman needs her own story! I wanted more from her. 2mo
ShyBookOwl @Addison_Reads For sure. I wonder if she appears in the sequel 2mo

Just finished reading City of Ghosts a few minutes ago and loved it. Victoria Schwab does some brilliant stuff in this book. The characters are intriguing and I can‘t wait to hang out with them again in the next book. Schwab has saved a lot of plot threads for the following books, but that doesn‘t keep City of Ghosts from being a satisfying read. #VESchwab

In a brilliant piece of world-building, Victoria Schwab forces Cassidy to navigate the city of the dead to find a place in the land of the living. It‘s a great obstacle that doesn‘t feel fabricated just for the sake of the problem, but rather it reads like she took advantage of the rules she‘d already put in place. That‘s world-building done right. #VESchwab #worldbuilding

A really enjoyable read that does a great job of blending Edinburgh's myths with a modern story. The characters were charming and the description of the city was spot on. If I was to have one issue though, there were times when it felt like Schwab was airing her own grievances about outsiders in Edinburgh.

Listened to Part 1 of the tagged book, and love it so far! Reminds me a bit of Gaiman‘s The Graveyard Book. #audiowalk #LitsyWalkers

Kaye Beautiful. Love the little bridge. Is this in a park or just a pathway of some type ? And is that a LFL in the top left ? Any books in it ? Great job. Day one is done ✅ 5mo
julesG Oh, looks lovely (and just as wet as my walk). 5mo
Bklover That‘s so pretty!!! You are amazing- it‘s 11:30am here and I‘m still in my jammies. I‘ll get out there in a bit! 5mo

4thhouseontheleft @kaye It‘s a greenway (walking/bike path), and yes that is a Free Little Library! Decent book selection, but nothing I wanted to carry away with me for the 2nd half of my walk. 😂 @julesG It is wet! @Bklover My daughter goes to Hebrew school Sunday mornings, so we have to get out kinda early anyway! 5mo
Bklover I love that your walk starts at Hebrew school and ends at a coffee shop! Perfect place to end a walk! 5mo
tracey38 Nice walk, even though it's wet and cold! 5mo
4thhouseontheleft @Bklover It is perfect! This route is the perfect length to give me an hour after my walk at Summit Coffee before having to pick her up. 😃 5mo
4thhouseontheleft @tracey38 Thanks! It‘s not so bad here, I mostly got wet from the ice melting off the tops of the trees. And I had a waterproof coat so I stayed quite dry! 5mo
DarcysMom Great walk! 5mo
LauraBeth I got accepted to Davidson and was so close to going there 😀 5mo
4thhouseontheleft @LauraBeth It‘s a pretty campus! A very small school, but the town is cute. 😃 I saw Ta Nehisi-Coates speak on campus a few years ago, and Sonia Sotomayor! They get some excellent speakers. 5mo
4thhouseontheleft Also tagging with #CarolinaThreadTrail and #2019greenwaychallenge to help me track my greenway audiowalks! #SouthProngRockyRiverGreenway (edited) 5mo
