In this highly atmospheric mystery, Ruth Galloway—“a captivating amateur sleuth” (Louise Penny)—and DCI Nelson investigate a murder in a medieval Italian town where dark secrets are buried as deep as bones. It’s not every day that you’re summoned to the Italian countryside on business, so when archaeologist Angelo Morelli asks for Ruth Galloway’s help identifying bones found in the tiny hilltop town of Fontana Liri, she jumps at the chance to go, bringing her daughter along with her for a working vacation. Upon arriving, she begins to hear murmurs of Fontana Liri’s strong resistance movement during World War II and senses the townspeople are dancing around a deeply buried secret. But how could that be connected to the ancient remains she’s been studying? Ruth is just beginning to get her footing in the dig when she’s thrown off-guard by the appearance of DCI Nelson. And when Ruth’s findings lead them to a modern-day murder, their holidays are both turned upside down, and they race to find out what darkness is lurking in this seemingly picturesque town.

Now that things are pretty much back to normal, I‘ve taken some me time and finished this. A bit different from the other books in the series, but equally as good. Set both in Italy and England, it felt as if the mystery was less important than the relationship drama. If you haven‘t read anything else in this series, it‘s not for you. But Ruth is one of my favorite characters, and I enjoyed it.

Reading this, but having trouble concentrating. @Ambrosnazzy is at the hospital emergency room with another kidney stone. Hubby is with her and keeping me updated while I babysit her son. Not the way I expected to spend the evening, for sure.

Crazeedi Oh no, I'm so sorry to hear! Kidney stones are so painful and horrible! My prayers for your girl. Hang in there mom 2w
Crazeedi Btw I just finished book 3 of series, waiting on my hold on book 4! 2w

Lynnsoprano @Crazeedi Thanks! She‘s had kidney stones and recurrent UTIs since her son was born, but it‘s been a year since she had a stone, and we were hoping they were a thing of the past. Obviously not. I‘m a basket case 2w

What do you do when your plan is to go out for lunch after hubby‘s doctor appointment, but he is finished earlier than expected? Go to the library! I came home with #10 in my favorite series. I think there‘s one after this that isn‘t available in the US yet. If so, maybe I can use it to justify another trip to England 😂

rretzler There‘s always Book Depository. I get my Elly Griffiths and Christopher Fowler books from them because both authors publish in the UK before the US. Jasper Fforde, too. In Fowler‘s case, it is sometimes over a year before the US book is out. Book Depository has free overseas shipping and the prices are fairly comparable to the US. I also have an Amazon.co.uk account that I sometimes use to order books to come to me here in the US😝 3w
Lynnsoprano @rretzler Thanks for the advice. I‘ve never used Book Depository, but I definitely need to correct that😄 3w

I finished this last week, the latest installment with Dr Ruth Galloway and DCI Harry Nelson. I thought it wasn't as good other ones in this series. But I still enjoyed it though! #books #bookcovers #bookmad

Another enjoyable book in this series. I can‘t wait for the next book! I like that Ruth and Kate got to leave England in this book, but I did miss all the antics of the characters in Norwich

bookwrm526 I was just glad there was a reason for Harry to show up in Italy - the blurb made it sound like a coincidence, and that would have been too much lol 11mo
ReadingMeagan @bookwrm526 I didn‘t read the blurb, but I would have been perturbed if it had been a coincidence too! 11mo

1. The Ruth Galloway mysteries
2. Masterpiece on PBS (kind of a cheat bc this is multiple shows repackaged for the US, but it's true)
3. Yes! I love big sports events. Loving the World Cup right now.
4. Unsure, but we'll see! I don't plan ahead.
5. My daddy was a newspaper editor, so he mostly read newspapers. (Father's Day is hard. I miss him!)

#FriYayIntro

Mitch Ruth Galloway- love her! I dream of retiring to her Norfolk coast house ( in my dreams!) 11mo
MallenNC @Mitch I know! When it talks about how she doesn't have neighbors I always think, "I'd move in, Ruth! I'll look after Kate and your cat!" 11mo
Tamra I keep seeing that mystery series mentioned so I just went and downloaded the audio of the first! (edited) 11mo

MallenNC @Tamra Cool! I hope you like it. The reason I do is because Ruth is smart, mysteries have a historical angle, and there's a lot going on with the personal stories of all the recurring characters. 11mo
Tamra @MallenNC sounds a bit like Louise Penny. 😺 11mo
MallenNC @Tamra I'm still working my way through her series, but I can see some similarities. Especially in that the characters matter more than the individual mysteries 11mo
Tamra @MallenNC I‘ve only listened to Penny and I loved the original narrator, but he died. 😑 11mo
MallenNC @Tamra I heard about that. Sad. She did a book event that was held at the college where I work and she was so fun. 11mo
Texreader Portugal‘s tied kick was amazing! Did you see it? 11mo

I wish all books were illustrated.
Sometimes I do it myself!

I enjoy Griffiths's dry wit, descriptions, Britspeak, and her heroine Ruth, whose career is identifying bones.

Love this series. Dark Angel is my favorite so far. The characters and relationships drive this series. Have to start with first book, The Crossing Places. These books are contagious and you will want to read on. Comes out on May 15, 2018 in the US. Thanks to NetGalley for allowing me a copy early! #thedarkangel #ellygriffiths #ruthgallowayseries

This is the 10th book in this series. And, if you are not already invested, this is not for you. The mystery at the heart of this book was thinly veiled and the focus of the plot was in advancing the story line that runs through the books. #netgalley

Andrew65 That‘s disappointing for this series. 14mo

I‘ve loved Griffiths‘ Ruth Galloway series from the first, & was eagerly anticipating this next entry in the series. “Was” is the keyword in that last sentence. Griffiths has gone from writing top-notch mysteries focusing primarily on Ruth‘s role as a forensic anthropologist to writing sappy relationship novels that focus on Ruth as the “other woman” in a love triangle, successfully reducing her to a cliche. Disappointing.

RachelO Ouch! That's really disappointing. 14mo
PatriciaU @RachelO It really is. I‘ve noticed the shift away from the “mystery” focus in the last couple of books, but it‘s ridiculous in this one. The focus is almost completely on Ruth, nelson, Michelle & Tim. Griffiths needs to rethink her approach. 14mo

Another great installment of a fun mystery series. This one takes Ruth to Italy, but trouble (personal and mystery) still follows. The personal storylines that continue through the books take more turns too. I do wish there were fewer negative descriptions of Ruth. We get it, she's not small. There's one passage where Nelson's older daughter is thinking to herself and comparing Ruth to her mother. It just seemed a little mean.

alleyfam51699 This sounds like a great series. I‘m adding it to my TBR. 1y
MallenNC @alleyfam51699 I like it a lot. There's always some good history along with the mystery. And the characters' lives have some drama! 1y

I feel before I start this review, I should admit, that I am a huge Elly Griffiths fan. Although, I promise this will not be a fan review. I am often harder on my favourite authors than any1. This book is set in Italy which is a change from the normal location of Norfolk. The author has cleverly designed the story so many of the familiar characters are in the book. It is for these characters I keep reading the series.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Like all the Ruth Galloway books, it pulled me right in and kept me there until I finished it. When I did, I found myself being extra grumpy and somewhat anxious. I finally realized that I was irritated that I had finished the book so quickly and the ending made me sad. I love a book that sinks so deep into your head that you‘re not even aware of your reactions to it until you sit down and think about it. Another great novel from Elly Griffiths!
