I listened to this 2nd book in the Ruth Galloway series. Ruth is a forensic archaeologist. She helped with a missing person case.and barely escaped with her life a few months ago. Now, she is called to a site in Norfolk when a child's skull is found she is called in again.

Griffiths kept me interested in the story throughout. She had good character development with Ruth.

1. Hard to choose, but I‘ll mention the tagged book, the 15th and final installment in Elly Griffiths‘ Ruth Galloway series. 2. I‘ve preordered The Curse of Penryth Hall, plus I‘m planning to read some holiday-themed cozies in December (by Donna Andrews, Anne Perry, M.C. Beaton) 3. Trope? Hmmm, one would be when the detective gets too close to the solution and becomes a target of the killer - adds a thriller element. @RaeLovesToRead

RaeLovesToRead Ooh, I'll have to check out Penryth Hall... 🤔 I like when the detective is involved and it becomes a thriller, but I HATE when the detective falls in love with a suspect 😅 5mo
Kimzey @RaeLovesToRead Oh, I agree! Puleeze, they should know better! I want them to show some sense and avoid getting romantically involved with a suspect! 5mo

Another excellent book in the Ruth Galloway Series. Ruth and Nelson are caught up in an investigation following a body turning up in the water at the remote Blakeney Point. Then we have a scientist researcher and his wife turn up dead, looking as if it was a murder-suicide. A complex Murder investigation which keeps you guessing to the very end. A good few developments at the end of the book which will no doubt feed into the next book.

Ruth is back in Norfolk and is now head of the Archaeology Department as Phil has retired. She has hired David Brown as her new lecturer to take her place. A recently dead body is discovered on the beach along with Bronze Age artifacts by The Night Hawks who are detectorists. A murder/suicide happens next at the farmhouse of the detectorists. Nelson begins to not trust David Brown.

EadieB Is he jealous of David's attention to Ruth? I was glad to see Ruth and Kate return to Norfolk. Lots of changes in Nelson's police department too. I can't wait to read the next book in the series as this book left off as Nelson seems ready to make a decision about his and Ruth's relationship. I highly recommend this series as it is character driven and so interesting if you love a bit of history mixed with your mystery. 5mo

Builders renovating a cafe find a bricked-up skeleton, recent enough to have a metal plate in its ankle and hence of interest to Nelson and his team. Ruth has problems of her own as the university wants to close down her dept.

The last in the series and it shows, as characters from earlier books pop up all over the place and there is a lot of reminiscing. The actual mystery was intriguing and suspenseful enough to keep me up way past my bedtime.

LiteraryinLawrence Wow, that‘s really impressive! 6mo

bthegood Congrats! Glad the finale was a good one - I am usually sad at the end of a good series - I actually feel I will miss the characters! (edited) 6mo

The Locked Room | Elly Griffiths

Pickpick

When the Covid lockdown is imposed, Nelson's team are looking into the suicide of a woman who apparently put a meal in the microwave and then took an overdose of sleeping pills. Examination of the records showed a string of similar suicides with mild discrepancies.

I found the mystery and its solution improbable and was far more interested in the affects of Covid and lockdown on the characters.

A group of metal detectorists exploring a beach find a washed up dead body as well as what may be a Bronze Age hoard. Nelson and Ruth swing into action.

I mainly read these for the combo of mystery and archaeology and am not so keen on the soap opera elements, so could have done without Maureen's cryptic advice to Nelson as a cliffhanger. The next one is set during lockdown, which I'd've thought would provide enough drama without histrionics.
