You know how it goes sometimes. It was at the library. Sounded intriguing. Some of her writing was 👍🏼. But I was disappointed that I had spent time on it when I finished the book.

Reggie The whole I‘m gonna use the story about the tennis coach to reinforce the idea that she felt second best to everything in her life frustrated the hell out of me. Cause I liked the scariness of being a girl in the city in the 90‘s and I loved the stuff about her mother and grandmother. Thought that was gold. 6mo
kspenmoll @Reggie As far as I can tell, you have read everything, are insightful, & have so much to share with us Littens.❤️ 6mo
Suet624 @Reggie Yes, there were some brilliant parts to the book and I think you‘ve expressed it well. And @kspenmoll, you‘re right. Reggie is a star. 6mo
Reggie @kspenmoll @Suet624 oh, please, I‘m a literary bum, but thank you ladies anyways. You two are 2 of the ones I‘m glad I follow. Katherine because of your love of nonfiction and Sue because of your love for the story of the complicated woman. ❤️ 6mo

This quote made me chuckle. The author is discussing the fact that women change their last names when they marry. Despite being married three times my last name has never changed. I have four children and they don‘t have my last name, but everyone important to me knows that I‘m their mom. 😀

HeatherBlue Love this! I‘m the same way...I‘ve been married twice (I swear this second times gonna stick lol), and I never even considered changing my name either time. People get so upset when they find out I‘ve kept my name...my husband finds it hilarious 😂 6mo
CouronneDhiver I was all too happy to kick the former name to the curb... my new name has a much more positive connotation for me. 😊 6mo
Slajaunie I changed mine but my middle name is my maiden name. I don‘t mind a bit. 6mo
See All 12 Comments
That-Bookish-Hiker @CouronneDhiver I felt the same way! I like my new last name much better. 6mo
AmyG I didn‘t like my maiden name....which was my step-fathher‘s (who I also didn‘t like). So I was thrilled to change my name. ;) 6mo
BiblioLitten My husband and I had the same last name. I would have changed it only if it fit in with my first name better. 6mo
Suet624 @AmyG @That-Bookish-Hiker @CouronneDhiver I actually edited my post a bit because I thought it could be seen as being judgmental and I‘m not at all. There are, of course, many reasons to change your name. 😁😁 6mo
That-Bookish-Hiker @Suet624 I didn‘t think your original post sounded judgmental at all. I love how common it is for women to chose whichever one they want. I also like hearing about why they chose to keep their last name or not. 😊 6mo
Cortg I was thrilled to change my last name because no one could ever pronounce my maiden name, Czaplicke. Gardner is so much easier. I love that you have kept your maiden name though. 🙌🏼 6mo
KGlibrarian I love that you kept your maiden name. I‘ve been married almost 25 years and I like that my three kids have the same last name as me but I always think back to how disorienting and confusing it was for me to suddenly take on this whole new identity. 6mo
Rachel_nyc I love this quote! I remember as a child questioning why a woman should have to give up their identity to get married and most of the adults in my life thought I was crazy! 🤪 I respect everyone‘s choice in the matter but it never made sense to me in the modern world. 6mo
kspenmoll My husband & I combined our names. I was Molloy; He was Spencer. Now all three of us (my son) are Spencer-Molloy. Computer software does not like us. 😀 6mo

This book doesn't have the greatest reviews, and I can see why. Many felt that the author focused too heavily on her own life and not enough on the crime in this book touted as a "true crime" work. I went in expecting to read about the author's teenage years and less about her tennis coach who committed the crime, so I enjoyed it. More below ??

Chelsea.Poole The subtitle "A Memoir of Teenage Obsession" could be taken both ways, but I believe "obsession" in the title refers to the author's. I partially listened to the #audiobook on #Libby which was ?? (edited) 8mo

I feel like this attempt at writing memoir and true crime simultaneously results in failure at both. Neither teenage Weiss nor the crime she is focused on interested me enough to like this book. For a much more successful attempt at this specific genre read Maggie Nelson‘s ‘Jane‘ and ‘The Red Parts‘.

Reviewsbylola I‘ve got this on my TBR. The true crime memoir was a refreshing concept but so far it doesn‘t translate as well as I would hope in some of the other books I‘ve read. 12mo
Reggie She got me with the parts about her mother and her. And I thought those parts were gold. But then she threw in the part about a tennis coach, and not being his favorite enough to stalk as an reaffirmation of her self loathing and it turned me off. I think she would have been ok leaving that part out. The whole NYC in the 90‘s being a young female, I totally bought. 12mo

This book starts off with the 2 scariest child stalking pages I‘ve ever read. This is Piper Weiss‘s memoir about growing up in the early 90‘s NYC and being an insecure and self loathing girl so much so that she juxtaposes this memoir with the account of a tennis coach, who she took lessons from, who kills himself after a failed kidnapping of a student he was obsessed with, solely for the purposes of her to say, “I wasn‘t loved by him enough👇🏼

Reggie to be his favorite.” Which drove me absolutely nuts, because the truth is that Piper can write and I felt there was gold in here but it was squandered. Anyways, thanks @minkyb for this book. #24in48 13mo

The 1st thing people need to realize is that this is a memoir of the author's life & although it does connect with this man and his crimes, it is *not* a detailed look solely into him. And I absolutely LOVED it for that exact reason. She puts you squarely in the experience of a privileged private school teenager. Amazing! The 2nd thing I will say...reading the last 50 pages in an isolated place as darkness came, not the smartest idea I've had. Lol

Some intriguing bits. But, ultimately, focused on Weiss‘s memories and her wresting with her feelings about this past crime without any real resolution. The journalism aspects were not very strong. #LibraryThing #EarlyReviewer

This was an interesting #audiobook but not what I expected. Still extremely readable! I thought it‘d be a true crime book, but it was a memoir wrapped around a crime that was perpetrated by the author‘s tennis coach. Really angsty and insightful, and a throwback to the early 90s. I wasn‘t raised in Manhattan‘s Upper Eastside and didn‘t attend private school, but after reading this through I‘m relieved I wasn‘t! 🎾🎾🎾

The emotionally honest memoir and the true-crime aspect both kept me fascinated. Some passages rang so true for me and my own life experiences that I had to put it down for long stretches. So let's say give it the same number of stars as there have been creepy, potentially or actually dangerous men in your life that you've known about, and then try not to keep yourself awake wondering about the imaginary number of them you never even noticed.

#Aprella #SelfishLove ?It's a selfish stalkerish love & twisted obsession that Gary Wilensky had for his teenage tennis students. He fixated on one in particular, stalked & tried to kidnap her, failed miserably & took his own life but he "groomed" others like Piper Weiss (author of this memoir/true crime account) winning their affection by doing things like sending them handmade valentines, buying them candy & treats & paying attention to them.

This is a true story about a tennis instructor who was obsessed, stalked, and attempted to kidnap one of his students. Told in a back and forth type style, jumping in time, and narrators. The difficulty is it is a short story, but fluffed out to fill more pages, so lots of telling and retelling of candy shop outings and the like. The good was it all took place around where I live and visited, so I knew the locations.

Unique & compelling mix of coming-of-age memoir & true crime story. Piper Weiss is 14 in 1993 when her beloved tennis coach Gary Wilensky's obsession with another student results in a botched kidnapping & his violent end. One of "Gary's Girls"-Weiss weaves the 90s with present day, her youthful devotion to Gary with who he truly was & her confusion with her feelings about not being Gary's 'pick.' With a Fuzzy Navel inspired by the book--link??

I thought this was quite good. As a memoir/true crime mash-up, it feels in some ways like an incomplete version of both, but I‘m okay with that. Especially if it means the author is saving material for more memoirs/essays - because her writing was impressive and definitely the highlight of the reading experience for me.
