Bookworm: A Memoir of Childhood Reading | Lucy Mangan
139 posts | 29 read | 170 to read
When Lucy Mangan was little, stories were everything. They opened up new worlds and cast light on all the complexities she encountered in this one. She was whisked away to Narnia and Kirrin Island and Wonderland. She ventured down rabbit holes and womble burrows into midnight gardens and chocolate factories. She wandered the countryside with Milly-Molly-Mandy, and played by the tracks with the Railway Children. With Charlottes Web she discovered Death and with Judy Blume it was Boys. No wonder she only left the house for her weekly trip to the library or to spend her pocket money on amassing her own at home. In Bookworm, Lucy revisits her childhood reading with wit, love and gratitude. She relives our best-beloved books, their extraordinary creators, and looks at the thousand subtle ways they shape our lives. She also disinters a few forgotten treasures to inspire the next generation of bookworms and set them on their way. Lucy brings the favourite characters of our collective childhoods back to life prompting endless re-readings, rediscoveries, and, inevitably, fierce debate and brilliantly uses them to tell her own story, that of a born, and unrepentant, bookworm.

#Movember #day1 #Cherish With all my health problems, the fact I can escape into books is a fact that I cherish very much. Not everyone has that, there are far too many people in this world who cannot read.Something I‘ve never told before,my hubby is one of those people. It‘s now a shame he‘s carried for over 45yrs. I‘ve tried to teach him, he‘s much better than he was before we met,but he struggles every day.I‘m hoping to get him a tutor this year.

Cinfhen Thanks for sharing your joy with us and tell your hubby not to give up!!!! Reading will come ♥️📚😘 3mo

I couldn‘t resist buying this book, being completely drawn in by this cover.
I have so many great memories of reading and visiting the library as a child. I loved series such as the Sweet Valley series, Saddle Club and later Point Horror when I was young and had a note book where I‘d write lists of them and tick them off as I read them.
Share your childhood reading memories Littens!

#7days7covers #covercrush #day4 This beautiful cover belongs to my No1 Read Of 2018. The author writes about her memories of reading as a child, talking about the books that changed her life. It made me so nostalgic about the books that made me the reader I am today, I spent most of my childhood hiding from my mother, my nose in as many books as I could get my hands on. I thank the universe for my local library & my favorite aunt every day still.

squirrelbrain I love that cover! ❤️ 4mo

I loved this. Spend the whole time listening with a smile on my face as I remembered childhood books. And a few I hadn't read are now added to my TBR. If you spent your childhood with a book in front of your face, I really recommend this.

My 2019 reading progress. I‘m such a slow reader 😅 It doesn‘t help that I often feel too tired after work that I don‘t have the energy left to read. The phrase “Born to read, forced to work” rings true to me 😆

Goodreads reading challenge progress: 25/40

How‘s your 2019 so far? 📚

Tera0707 Same boat as you. I believe I‘m on book 27. I always plan on reading a lot, but work sure gets in the way 😆 7mo
baes 25 is great! Don‘t be so hard on yourself. I just finished book 43. Goal is for 60 this year...in August I start some pretty time consuming classes, and I will be running my kids to sports, so that might not be too far off realistically. Lol I‘ll be tired then. 😴 7mo
Megabooks I‘m at 86/180, so I‘m almost on track. Any amount of reading is good reading!! 7mo
See All 19 Comments
erzascarletbookgasm You‘re doing great. And you‘re discovering so many #nyrb books and authors 👍 7mo
emilyhaldi I feel you SO HARD!! Since I started a new job in Feb I hardly have any time (or desire) to read during the week 😑 but I‘m impressed with your penetration of #nyrb to total books read so far!! Can you pick a favorite?! 7mo
sisilia @Tera0707 Right?! The TBR pile is getting wilder and wilder 😅 7mo
sisilia @baes Aawww that‘s different form of fun 🥰 7mo
JacqMac I‘m at 38/75. I actually lowered my number from 100, because I‘m having a slow year. I don‘t want to aim for something I can never reach. 7mo
sisilia @Megabooks Oh yes, reading is always good and theurapetic 7mo
sisilia @erzascarletbookgasm Thank you! That‘s because I have accumulated so many #nyrb and I just want to read them all. Alas, I‘m only human 😅 They have excelent collections; I‘m super impressed 7mo
sisilia @emilyhaldi My top 3 picks (from those I read in 2019) are All for Nothing, School for Love, The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne. Katalin Street is good, too; but it‘s so sad it made me cryyyy 😢 7mo
sisilia @JacqMac I agree. A manageable goal puts less stress on reading 7mo
Susannah I think 25 is terrific! I‘m at 28, and my goal for the year is 60. I tried a 10-book marathon in April, and I neither met my goal nor felt like picking up a book for the first half of May. Goals are helpful, and I don‘t mind stretch goals, but I hate to think of something I enjoy as much as reading as something I have to race through. (That said, a strong reading month when it‘s not dictated by something like a marathon is VERY satisfying! 😁) (edited) 7mo
sisilia @Susannah My feel exactly! 🤗 10-book marathon sounds amazing! It‘s fun when you do it together with fellow bookworms 😺 7mo
emilyhaldi Oh I was curious about Judith Hearne!! I've had that one for a while, will have to move it up on my list 😄 and will save Katalin St for when I need a good cry 😉😪 7mo
Nute Your reading progress so far this year is amazing! And some of your book selections are challenging reads. I know what you mean about being too exhausted after work to read. I often doze during the effort. I have to agree with @Megabooks any amount of reading is good reading! Hang in there.🙂 7mo
sisilia Thank you @Nute 🤗 7mo
Gissy My reading goals were realistic, 55 books for 2019. I had read 41 and I have 3 in progress. 7mo
sisilia That‘s great @Gissy 👍🏻🤩 7mo

At first i found this book gripping, it made me laugh in places and i thoroughly enjoyed it, but.. about halfway through the book, it seemed to get boring. The footnotes were longer than the chapters sometimes and by the time i had read the notes I'd near forgotten what Lucy was initially writing about..

Maybe it's because I've not been well and distracted, maybe if i took the time to reread it i would enjoy it all, but for now I'll leave it..

A touching childhood memoir and a beautiful love letter to reading ❤️ Lucy Mangan writes gorgeous sentences and perfectly captures the life of a young bookworm! While we come from different generations and cultures and our childhood book canon is vastly different, I found parts of myself and my youth in these pages. One of my favorites this year. 📚
