Nora works to find lost people but this time will be her daughter, the one she gave in adoption. There will be a lot of drama in this suspense novel. I struggled to end it because of this drama that you didn‘t know if you were dealing with all her trauma or the novel suspense. This book was read for #LiterallyDeadBookClub and apparently they loved it😳not me. 2.5⭐️

I love a good "who-done-it" with messy characters with inner demons and a heart of gold. Add in some fascinating historical facts and I'm hooked.

Hooked_on_books This is common is American women but not men. Do Canadian men do this? 4y
KVanRead @Bookwormjillk @LeahBergen @Book_Fiend_Melissa @EchoLogical oh, well, there are worse things, right? 😁 4y
KVanRead @Hooked__on__books Canadians of all genders are pretty famously apologetic. The joke goes if someone steps on a Canadian‘s foot standing in line they‘ll apologize for being stepped on - but it‘s not really a joke - I‘ve done, do it, all the time😂🇨🇦😂 4y
KathyWheeler I can‘t decide if I got my tendency to apologize for everything from being an American woman raised in the South or from my Canadian parents. Perhaps it‘s a double whammy. 4y

This is a soft pick. I love a flawed protagonist especially in crime fic and Nora is a fabulous one - so strong, smart and cynical, with so much to explore over the course of a series. I also quite liked the secondary characters and adore the setting which she describes with wit and pathos. The plot and pacing are a bit problematic. Suffered from far too many eye rolls over improbable and all too convenient situations that felt a bit cheaty. ⤵️

KVanRead The pace also felt a bit clunky at times. But I love Nora and am intrigued to find out where her journey takes her, so will probably pick up the next one eventually. 4y
MsMelissa Glad you enjoyed it, even if wasn‘t a solid pick. 4y

MsMelissa Looking forward to your thoughts. I read this a few years back. It was a so-so for me (not fast-paced enough). I liked it well enough, just not enough to continue with the series. 4y

Nora helps find missing people and her dark past is slowly revealed as she looks for a missing girl with personal connections to herself. I tore through this book, reminded of Attica Locke in the exploration of societal realities surrounding the non-white state and the mixture of mystery and literary fiction. I look forward to reading more from Kamal.

Atmospheric suspense, set on the mean streets Vancouver, and starring a brown woman who has been broken in so many ways, yet doesn‘t let that stop her from fighting to do things her way. Even if it means alienating everyone who has shown her kindness. Everyone except her dog, who‘s my second-favourite character in this gritty crime novel. Racism, poverty and the issue of missing and murdered Indigenous women. #DiverseVoices #Canadian

Listened to the first part of this audiobook on my way home from @shawnmooney ‘s wedding, #audioknitting. Finished the top row of this mitten just as we landed in Edmonton. Listened to the rest of the audiobook in between Mohs surgical procedures yesterday to remove cancer from my nose. (Trust me, seeing the mitten is much better than my bruised and bandaged face.) I can only read with one eye today so audiobooks are a great blessing.

saresmoore What an eventful week! 6y
Hooked_on_books Your mitten is beautiful! 6y
Lindy @saresmoore It‘s not over yet. A guest is arriving from Japan on Friday for a two-week visit, we‘re opening our house Saturday and Sunday for an art show and sale, and I‘m hosting a bokashi compost workshop in the back yard Sunday afternoon. Meanwhile, I expect both eyes to be swollen shut tomorrow, but the healing should progress quickly after that. 6y

Lindy @ValerieAndBooks Thanks. The great thing about the Mohs technique is that they can be sure to have removed all of the cancer. I‘m relieved it‘s gone. 6y

Lindy @Samplergal Thanks. I discovered that I don‘t like knitting with wool in hot weather, so I would probably knit garments with cotton or linen fibre if I lived in Florida. Definitely wouldn‘t be making mittens! 6y

It's late. The phone rings.

The man on the other end says his daughter is missing.

Your daughter.

The baby you gave away over 15 years ago.

What do you do?

Nora Watts isn't sure that she wants to get involved. But then she sees the photograph. A girl, a teenager, with her eyes. How can she turn her back on her?

The search of her daughter brings Nora back to a past she worked hard to put behind her, but which is always there, waiting...

I'm actually surprised this book doesn't have a higher rating on Litsy. A woman living in the margins investigates the recent disappearance of the daughter she gave up for adoption 15 years earlier. The story gets dark, and you have to willingly suspend disbelief in places, but this was a solid debut and a compelling mystery. #mystery

This is my tentative September #TBR. The Fact of a Body is a holdover from last month. Even though I've heard nothing but good things about it, I've been hesitant to start it due to the subject matter. My #currentread is set in Canada and begins with a phone call - Nora Watts, who works for a private investigator, is told that a teenaged girl is missing. And that this girl is her daughter, the one she gave up for adoption 15 years ago.
I'm not big on the missing girl-type stories but Nora is an interesting one with a scarred past and an ability to tell when someone is lying. Not a bad read so far.

#TBRtemptation post 4! #BEA17 edition! Scheduled for a July 25th release. This suspense novel is the first in the new Nora Watts series, considered as compelling as Lisbeth Salander & Harry Hole. 15 years after giving her daughter up for adoption, Bonnie's considered a disappeared runaway. Her adoptive parents turn to Nora, who sets out to find the girl she wish she'd never had. From Vancouver to Canada's interior. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎
